First molecular characterization of Sarcocystis tenella in Tatra chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra tatrica) in Poland.

In this study, sarcocysts from three Polish Tatra chamois were isolated and identified using morphological and molecular methods for the first time. Six cysts were found in the latissimus dorsi muscle and another two in the diaphragm. No sarcocysts were detected in the myocardium, tongue, and esophagus. The isolated cysts were long with rounded ends, 0.35-0.61 mm in length, and 0.02-0.06 mm in width. All the sarcocysts were identified as Sarcocystis tenella on the basis of light microscopy and sequencing of cytochrome C oxidase subunit I (cox1) and small-subunit rRNA (ssu rRNA) genes. Comparat

Ultrastructure of Sarcocystis bertrami sarcocysts from a naturally infected donkey (Equus asinus) from Egypt.

There is considerable confusion concerning Sarcocystis species in equids. Little is known of Sarcocystis infections in donkeys (Equus asinus). Here we describe the structure of Sarcocystis bertrami-like from the donkey by light microscopy (LM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Nineteen sarcocysts from the tongue of a donkey from Egypt were studied both by LM and TEM. By LM, all sarcocysts had variably shaped and sized projections on the sarcocyst walls, giving it a thin-walled to thick-walled appearance, depending on individual sarcocyst and plane of section. By TEM, sarcocysts walls

Pathology of experimental Sarcocystis falcatula infections of canaries (Serinus canarius) and pigeons (Columba livia).

Sarcocystis falcatula is an apicomplexan parasite with a broad range of avian intermediate hosts. The pathology and pathogenesis of infection with this parasite has been studied experimentally in the budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus). The present study quantitatively examines the pathology of this parasite in canaries (Serinus canarius) and pigeons (Columba livia) and compares it with that found in budgerigars. The general progression of merogony and cyst formation is similar qualitatively to that seen in budgerigars, but it differs quantitatively. The principal site of precystic merogony i

The Antiparasitic Effects of Nitrate and Lactic Acid on Sarcocystis Bradyzoites in Meat: Enhancing Food Safety.

Sarcocystis spp. are zoonotic protozoan parasites found worldwide, transmitted through the consumption of infected meat. These parasites form cysts in the muscles of livestock, causing economic losses and health risks, including reduced meat and milk production, abortions, and, in severe cases, death in intermediate hosts. This study evaluates the antiparasitic effects of nitrate and lactic acid against Sarcocystis bradyzoites in sheep meat, aiming to identify effective decontamination methods to enhance food safety. Samples of Sarcocystis cysts were collected from infected sheep organs and tr

Identification and characterization of Sarcocystis lutrae-like (Apicomplexa: Sarcocystidae) in terrestrial mustelids and viverrid in Taiwan.

Sarcocystis spp. are protist parasites with strict two-host life cycle and ubiquitous existence. Predatory animals usually serve as the final host of Sarcocystis and their preys serve the intermediate host of the parasite. In this study, we reported a Sarocycstis species infecting muscle of three species of carnivores in the mountain of Taiwan, two mustelids and one viverrid. These animals are Formosan ferret badger (Melogale moschata subaurantiaca), Formosan yellow-throated marten (Martes flavigula chrysospila), and gem-faced civet (Paguma larvata taivana). It was characterized and described

Rapid suspension-based screening of Trichinella, Alaria and Sarcocystis spp. in game and processed meat.

Foodborne zoonoses affect nearly 10% of the global population each year, with parasitic disease making up a significant proportion of these infection. Meat-borne parasites of zoonotic relevance, including Trichinella spp., Sarcocystis spp., and Alaria alata, can be transmitted through pork and other meats, with trichinellosis remaining a significant public health concern despite effective control in domestic pigs. This study introduces a simple, rapid suspension-based method for detecting major meat-borne parasites in fresh and processed meat. The method is intended for rapid, field-applicable

Habitat-associated detection of Toxoplasma gondii and Sarcocystis spp. in Cetaceans from the Brazilian coast.

Cetaceans are sentinels of marine ecosystem health and are increasingly exposed to protozoal pathogens. This study investigated the occurrence and molecular identity of Sarcocystidae protozoa in 159 stranded cetaceans representing 21 species along the Brazilian coast. Molecular analysis based on PCR amplification and sequencing of the sarcocystid internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1) region revealed infections in 14 individuals, showing a clear habitat-associated distribution. Toxoplasma gondii and Sarcocystis neurona were detected in nine coastal cetaceans, consistent with transmission from te

Prevalence of visible Sarcocystis aucheniae macrocysts and their association with productive traits in alpacas (Vicugna pacos).

Alpaca farming is one of the main livestock activities in the high Andean regions of Peru, where Sarcocystis aucheniae infection causes economic losses because carcasses containing visible macrocysts are condemned or downgraded during meat inspection. The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of visible S. aucheniae macrocysts in alpacas slaughtered at the municipal abattoir of Macusani, Puno Region, Peru, and to evaluate their association with sex, age, live weight, carcass weight, and carcass yield. The methodology included the visual inspection of 1,361 alpaca carcasses fol

MORPHOLOGIC DEVELOPMENT OF AN UNIDENTIFIED SPECIES OF SARCOCYSTIS ASSOCIATED WITH ENCEPHALITIS IN A GRAY FOX (UROCYON CINEREOARGENTEUS).

Morphologic development of unidentified Sarcocystis sp. schizonts associated with encephalitis in a 9-wk-old gray fox (Urocyon cinereoargenteus) from Texas is described. Sarcocystis schizonts were confined to lesions. They were sparsely distributed and their staining affinity for hematoxylin and eosin varied with developmental stages; immature schizonts were deeply stained compared with mature schizonts. Most parasites were extravascular and the host cell was not identified for those that were intracellular. The parasite divided by endopolygeny, in which the nucleus became lobulated but lobes

Identification of a new Sarcocystis sp. in marsh deer (Blastocerus dichotomus) from wetlands of Argentina.

The marsh deer (Blastocerus dichotomus) is the largest South American native deer species and is listed as "Vulnerable" by IUCN due to the population reduction. As part of a conservation and disease surveillance program, muscle samples from 14 marsh deer found dead in 2016 and 2017 in northeast Argentina were obtained at necropsy. Samples from each animal were processed as pooled muscles (heart, diaphragm, tongue and hindlimb) by homogenization and direct microscopical observation to detect intracellular Sarcocystis spp. cysts. Sarcocysts were observed in six samples, and several cysts recover

Molecular characterization of Sarcocystis spp. as a cause of protozoal encephalitis in a free-ranging black bear.

A free-ranging juvenile male black bear (Ursus americanus), found dead in Alberta, Canada, had severe nonsuppurative encephalitis. Lesions in the brain were most severe in the gray matter of the cerebral cortex, and included perivascular cuffs of lymphocytes and plasma cells, areas of gliosis that disrupted the neuropil, and intralesional protozoan schizonts. The left hindlimb had suppurative myositis associated with Streptococcus halichoeri. Immunohistochemistry and molecular analyses (PCR and sequencing of 4 discriminatory loci: 18S rDNA, ITS-1 rDNA, cox1, rpoB) identified Sarcocystis canis

Epidemiological and Histopathological Investigation of Sarcocystis spp. in Slaughtered Dromedary Camels (Camelus dromedarius) in Egypt.

Sarcocystosis is considered one of the major parasitic diseases with a worldwide distribution. It is caused by the obligatory intracellular protozoan parasites of the genus Sarcocystis. Besides its public health issues, sarcocystosis results in significant economic losses due to its impact on productivity and milk yield. A wide range of final and intermediate hosts have been identified, including mammals, birds, and reptiles; however, few studies have investigated the contribution of camels to maintaining the epidemiological foci of the disease in countries such as Egypt. The present study was

Morphological and molecular identification of three species of Sarcocystis in reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) in Iceland.

Six Sarcocystis species have previously been described from reindeer in Norway based on sarcocyst morphology and DNA sequencing. The aim of this study was to determine whether reindeer in Iceland, which descend from reindeer imported from Norway in 1787, also were infected with Sarcocystis, and to identify and genetically characterise any species present. Muscle tissue from the heart, diaphragm and/or oesophagus was collected from 36 reindeer in Iceland. Pieces of all tissue samples were examined histologically.
