A 19.5-year-old male mongrel dog developed a progressive lameness and swelling around the right carpus. A tumor (6 x 3 x 3 cm) was found in the caudal of distal antebrachium of the right forelimb, including tendons of the superficial digital flexor muscle and deep digital flexor muscle. No joint destruction was observed. The tumor consisted of round and spindle cells arranged in a compact sheet. There were occasional slit-like spaces or lumina, and areas rich in collagen fibers giving an appearance of tendon tissues. Neoplastic cells gave a positive immunoreaction to vimentin, but negative rea

We report two cases of synovial sarcoma arising in the vulva. The patients were 30 and 37 years old and presented with a painless mass that was interpreted clinically as a cyst. The tumors were 2.0 and 1.2 cm in greatest diameter. Histologically, they were composed of epithelial cells forming solid nests and gland-like and papillary structures surrounded by spindle-shaped cells. Immunohistochemically, the epithelial cells stained for cytokeratin and the spindle-shaped cells for vimentin. Ultrastructurally, the epithelial cells had prominent intercellular junctions and narrow microvilli and wer

The synovial cell sarcoma is a malignant soft tissue tumour which mostly occurs associated with or in a large joint. To date, the histogenetic origin has been discussed controversially and there is still no agreement as to whether it arises from normal synovium of joints, tendon sheaths or bursae, specialised forms of mesenchymal tissue (arthrogenous mesenchyma) or ordinary connective tissue. The tumour rarely occurs in the head and neck region. Only about 76 cases world-wide have been described up to now. We report on a case of a 30-year old man with a synovial cell sarcoma of the temporomand

A rare case of synovial sarcoma arising in the wall of the hypopharynx is presented. Computed tomography was useful in delineating tumor extent, evaluating airway compromise, and confirming the presence of calcification within the tumor, which can be a favorable prognostic indicator.

The purpose of this review is to clarify the terminology, possible cells of origin, and expected behavior of the most common synovial tumors in dogs. The synovial lining consists of 2 cell types, type A and type B. Type A synoviocytes are histiocytes of bone marrow origin that are immunoreactive with antibodies against typical markers of histiocyte origin, such as CD18, Iba-1, and CD204. Certain breeds and dogs with previous injury to a joint, especially cranial cruciate ligament rupture, are predisposed to synovial histiocytic sarcoma. Type B synoviocytes are mesenchymal cells that produce sy

OBJECTIVE: Synovial sarcoma in the head and neck region is rare, and is difficult to resect with adequate safety margins because of its anatomical complexity. We herein report our experiences with synovial sarcoma in this region, and review the literature regarding the management of such cases.
METHOD: We retrospectively examined four cases of synovial sarcoma arising from the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) area and infratemporal fossa.
RESULT: Only one patient remains alive without disease, while the other three patients have died.
CONCLUSION: The local control of these tumors has improved

A metastatic synovial sarcoma in the right atrium and ventricle is described. A 36-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with generalized fatigue, dyspnoea, and precordial pain. Transthoracic echocardiography demonstrated a metastatic tumour in both the right atrium and right ventricle and revealed obstruction of the inflow tract of the right ventricle caused by a metastatic right atrial tumour. Thoracic computed tomography revealed a pleural-based paravertebral mass in the left intrathoracic cavity and multiple pulmonary nodules in both lungs. Cardiac surgery was performed for palliative

PURPOSE: To report a case of metastatic synovial sarcoma to the parasellar area and orbit.
DESIGN: Interventional case report.
METHODS: A 43-year-old woman with a history of a right forearm synovial sarcoma treated with excision, radiation, and chemotherapy 16 months previously presented with blurred vision of the right eye, pain with eye movement, epistaxis, and a right superior division cranial nerve III palsy. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a right parasellar and right orbital apex mass.
RESULTS: Pathologic examination of the parasellar biopsy revealed metastatic synovial sarcoma. At

Synovial sarcoma is a relatively common soft tissue sarcoma particularly in the adolescent and young adult. We report an unusual case of a synovial sarcoma arising within a popliteal cyst in a 13-year-old female presenting with bilateral popliteal cysts. MR imaging demonstrated the cyst with evidence of subacute haemorrhage and a discrete nodule of tumour.

A case of primary synovial sarcoma of the soft palate is reported in a 19 year old man who was in good health and free of recurrence one year after operation. Radiation therapy was selected and a dose of 7600 rads was given. The presence of hyaluronic acid was investigated using the critical electrolyte concentration method. The tumor was considered histogenetically to be derived from undifferentiated mesenchymal tissue.

Cervical synovial sarcoma has been reported in only 15 cases; in none of these was there any association with a vascular structure. A patient with cervical synovial sarcoma encompassing the bifurcation of the left carotid artery underwent a left radical neck dissection, including excision of the left external carotid artery and the hypoglossal nerve. The tumor was dissected away from the common carotid and internal carotid arteries. Although the fibrous pseudocapsule of the tumor had not involved the fibrous adventitia of the carotid arteries. Radiation therapy with 6000 rads tumor dose was ad

Synovial sarcoma (SS) represents a rare malignant type of soft tissue sarcoma (STS) with uncertain differentiation accounting for 5%-10% of all STS. Primary renal synovial sarcoma (PRSS) is very rare, with only about 205 documented cases so far with predominantly monophasic morphology. Clinical and radiological presentations of PRSS as renal mass, abdominal pain and haematuria often make it difficult to distinguish from other renal malignancies like renal cell carcinoma (RCC). The occurrence of both carcinoma and sarcoma simultaneously in the same kidney is rare. Due to the rarity and severity

Synovial sarcoma (SS) is a tumor of uncertain lineage with a characteristic mixture of spindled and epithelial components that is subtyped as biphasic when both spindle and epithelial components are present and as monophasic when composed solely of spindle cells. Epithelial-predominant SS is extremely rare, and neuroendocrine differentiation within this component would be exceptional. Prominent ossification is another uncommon feature in SS, thought to portend a better prognosis. The hallmark genomic alteration in SS is t(X;18;p11;q11), resulting in the formation of an oncogenic fusion gene, u

Synovial sarcoma of the heart is a rare tumor. Herein we would like to report a case of giant intrapericardial cardiac synovial sarcoma that originated from the right ventricle and grew outward near the diaphragm. After making adequate preoperative preparation, we performed the surgery as quickly as possible and resected the tumor completely. Based on the identification of the translocation on chromosome 18 rearrangement, the tumor can be diagnosed as a primary cardiac synovial sarcoma. Through this study, we aim to afford more information about cardiac synovial sarcomas as well as a reference

BACKGROUND: Synovial sarcoma is a rare and aggressive soft tissue malignancy most commonly arises from periarticular tissue of the extremities. Although several cases in the literature have reported different origins, primary pulmonary synovial sarcoma (PPSS) is an exceedingly rare and underrecognized entity, accounting for 0.5% of all lung malignancies. Clinical presentation includes chest pain, dyspnea, cough, and hemoptysis. The finding of hemothorax is a rare presentation and was barely reported in the literature. Due to its rarity and aggressive nature, the optimal treatment is unclear, w

Primary pleuropulmonary synovial sarcoma (PPSS) is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm, accounting for less than 0.5% of all primary lung tumours. Presentation is often vague and may include cough, chest pain or dyspnoea. Due to the tumour's rarity, diagnosis can be challenging, and not much is known about the disease process or optimal treatment course. In this case report, we describe an older female patient who underwent blebectomy for recurrent pneumothorax. No masses or suspected lesions were found on CT imaging besides the bleb. The bleb was then found to be PPSS via RT-PCR cytology. This case a
