Associations of Osteoporosis, Sarcopenia, and Osteosarcopenia With Mortality: A Comparative Analysis for Different Sarcopenia Definitions in the Manitoba and NHANES Populations.

Osteosarcopenia is a major public health concern, but its association with mortality, remains understudied. We aimed to examine the associations between osteoporosis, sarcopenia, and osteosarcopenia with mortality. We used two populations: the Manitoba Bone Mineral Density Database (MBMDD) study (1999-2018) and the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) study (2001-2019). Individuals aged 50 years or above with complete data on BMD, appendicular lean body mass, demographic characteristics and comorbidity measures. Five definitions for diagnosis of SP were considered: Foundat

Health outcomes of sarcopenia: a consensus report by the outcome working group of the Global Leadership Initiative in Sarcopenia (GLIS).

The Global Leadership Initiative in Sarcopenia (GLIS) aims to standardize the definition and diagnostic criteria for sarcopenia into one unifying, common classification. Among other actions to achieve this objective, the GLIS has organized three different working groups (WGs), with the WG on outcomes of sarcopenia focusing on reporting its health outcomes to be measured in clinical practice once a diagnosis has been established. This includes sarcopenia definitions that better predict health outcomes, the preferred tools for measuring these outcomes, and the cutoffs defining normal and abnorma

The Impact of Paraspinal Sarcopenia Compared With Generalized Sarcopenia on Conservative Treatment Outcomes in Degenerative Lumbar Spinal Stenosis.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. OBJECTIVE: To assess the relationship between generalized and paraspinal sarcopenia in degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) and identify risk factors for conservative treatment failure. BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia, a condition marked by a progressive, age-related decline in skeletal muscle mass, strength, and function, is increasingly being studied in the context of spinal diseases. However, uncertainties remain about the relationship between paraspinal and generalized sarcopenia, and their impact on spinal disease progression and treatment outcomes.

Frailty and Sarcopenia in Elderly Diabetes Mellitus.

Background: With the global rise in the ageing population and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), elderly individuals are increasingly prone to complications like sarcopenia and frailty, which are conditions linked to muscle loss and functional decline. These syndromes contribute significantly to morbidity and healthcare burden but remain underestimated in older adults with diabetes. Indian data regarding their prevalence and correlation with glycemic control is limited. Materials and Methods: This hospital-based observational study was conducted over 22 months at Kasturba Medical College, Manipa

Novel biomarkers for sarcopenia: a narrative review.

Sarcopenia is an age-related syndrome characterized by the progressive loss of skeletal muscle mass, strength, and function. It is associated with an increased risk of falls, disability, and mortality, as well as a significant healthcare burden. Traditional assessment of sarcopenia relies on imaging techniques and physical function tests, which have important limitations, including operational complexity, difficulty in early identification, and inability to reflect underlying molecular mechanisms. The emergence of candidate biomarkers-including muscle-specific factors, inflammation-related pro

The impact of cachexia and sarcopenia in bladder cancer.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Bladder cancer disproportionately affects older adults and is characterized by recurrent disease and cumulative treatment exposure, resulting in a population with limited physiologic reserve and increased susceptibility to muscle and metabolic decline. Understanding the role of sarcopenia and cachexia in shaping treatment tolerance, functional recovery, and outcomes is, therefore, increasingly important. RECENT FINDINGS: Sarcopenia and cancer cachexia are prevalent across the bladder cancer continuum and are consistently associated with treatment toxicity, impaired recovery

Sarcopenia: an Aging Perspective and Management Options.

There is no doubt that sarcopenia is one of the most defining characteristics of aging that negatively impacts the people's health and quality of life. The condition is characterized by the progressive and generalized loss of muscle mass and strength, affecting physical performance. It is part of aging but can be exacerbated by pathophysiological conditions like cancer and several factors such as a sedentary lifestyle, poor nutrition, chronic diseases, falls and immobilization. Numerous cellular mechanisms have been implicated in its pathogenesis, including hormonal changes, mitochondrial dysf

Subclinical atherosclerosis and sarcopenia: A prospective study.

The relationship between subclinical carotid artery atherosclerosis and sarcopenia has not been clarified in many respects. In this study, the possible relationship between composite clinical sarcopenia indices and various levels of subclinical atherosclerosis parameters was revisited. The Ishii score (Ishii-max and Ishii-average) was used to determine sarcopenia in 257 prospectively recruited healthy controls and patients with neurological diseases (age: 65 ± 10 years, 50% female). Carotid artery distensibility indices (stress, strain, modulus, stiffness, and distensibility), intima-media thi

CD9, a novel potential biomarker of sarcopenia.

Sarcopenia is defined as a progressive decrease in skeletal muscle mass and strength due to ageing, and is associated with adverse outcomes such as falls, fractures, and physical disability, leading to increased healthcare expenditures and mortality risks. Although sarcopenia has recently become a major challenge, there are currently no effective interventions or drugs marketed for sarcopenia. Therefore, new biomarkers for early diagnosis and targeted drugs for the treatment of sarcopenia are urgently needed. In the present research, transcriptomics and proteomics analyses were combined and ex

Getting to the heart of sarcopenia and cardiovascular disease.

Sarcopenia and cardiovascular disease are reported to have similar pathophysiological mechanisms, which suggests that management strategies for one could reduce the burden of the other. A variety of biomarkers linked to changes in the neuromuscular junction, endocrine systems as well as growth factors and muscle proteins have been utilised to assess and identify patients with sarcopenia or patients at risk of developing sarcopenia. Sarcopenia working groups have defined a set of consensus clinical guidelines to diagnose sarcopenia which have been commonly adopted globally. In addition, screeni

Sarcopenia and MASLD: novel insights and the future.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD; previously known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease) is the leading cause of chronic liver disease worldwide and is closely linked to the obesity epidemic. MASLD often coexists with sarcopenia, an age-related loss of muscle mass and muscle function. These conditions are closely connected, and metabolic syndrome and its associated metabolic factors have a crucial role in their relationship. Metabolic syndrome considerably affects the risk and progression of MASLD and sarcopenia and promotes their development through various mech

Research progress on sarcopenia in the musculoskeletal system.

Sarcopenia, a progressive and systemic skeletal muscle disorder marked by the accelerated deterioration of both muscle function and mass, is highly prevalent among the elderly population, significantly contributing to an elevated risk of adverse outcomes, including falls, fractures, and muscle weakness. Clinical investigations have identified a strong correlation between sarcopenia and several prevalent degenerative skeletal muscle disorders. This correlation is attributed to imbalances in joint mechanics resulting from localized muscle atrophy and the influence of musculoskeletal secretory fa

Sarcopenia and the management of spinal disease in the elderly.

Sarcopenia, generally defined by the loss of skeletal mass and function, may disproportionately affect elderly individuals and heavily influence spinal disease. Muscle atrophy is associated with myriad clinical problems, including thoracic kyphosis, increased sagittal vertical axis (SVA), spinal implant failures, and postoperative complications. As such, the aim of this narrative review is to synthesize pertinent literature detailing the intersection between sarcopenia and the impact of sarcopenia on the management of spine disease. Specifically, we focus on the domains of etiology, diagnosis
