Anti-arthritic potential of crude sulfated polysaccharide from marine macroalgae Sargassum ilicifolium (Turner) C. Agardh: Regulation of cytokine cascade.

Seaweeds have been utilized as food, fodder, fertilizer, and medicine since ancient times; nevertheless, they have received only a little attention. In the current work, we extracted the sulfated polysaccharide from a marine source and investigated its anti-arthritic potential in vivo. The isolated and freeze-dried polysaccharide was tested for acute oral toxicity based on OECD 423. This step was followed by investigations on clinical signs and gross pathological alterations seen. A complete Freund's adjuvant-induced arthritis was used to test the in vivo activity in female Sprague-Dawley rats

Nutrient sources driving Sargassum growth in the northern tropical Atlantic: shipboard experiments simulating Amazon plume, Saharan dust, and vertical mixing.

The North Equatorial Recirculation Region (NERR) in the northern tropical Atlantic functions as the region of origin of the recurring large-scale blooms of pelagic Sargassum spp. that have occurred since 2011, creating the Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt (GASB), with Sargassum rafts extending from West Africa into the Gulf of Mexico. Various nutrient sources are hypothesized to force this bloom. We tested the effects of different nutrient sources on the growth and physiology of Sargassum in controlled on-board experiments during a research expedition through the northern tropical Atlantic (inclu

Health risks associated with seaweed strandings: sulfur gases and antimicrobial resistant (AMR) bacteria from decaying Ulva intestinalis and Sargassum muticum.

Seaweed strandings can cover several km2 with many 1000s of tonnes of biomass and are of international concern. They have a substantial environmental impact locally, including through the release of malodorous corrosive and toxic volatiles causing respiratory illness and death. The toxic gases hydrogen sulfide and ammonia have been suggested as the main hazardous gases but limited information on the diversity and quantity of volatiles released from decomposing seaweeds is available. Here we use proton-transfer reaction mass spectrometry (PTR-MS) and gas chromatography with flame-photometric de

Morphology and Phylogenetic Position of the Sargassum Nudibranch Scyllaea fulva Quoy & Gaimard, 1824 (Nudibranchia: Scyllaeidae): First Record in Hong Kong.

Scyllaeidae is a small group of nudibranchs comprising three genera (Scyllaea, Notobryon, and Crosslandia) with striking morphological similarities, making their identification challenging based on external features alone. Previous studies have highlighted the significance of central radular teeth in distinguishing Notobryon from Scyllaea and Crosslandia. The genus Scyllaea, commonly known as the sargassum nudibranch, currently consists of only two valid species, Scyllaea pelagica and Scyllaea fulva. These species inhabit seaweed Sargassum spp., feeding on hydroids. During a biodiversity surve
