Hospitalizations for aplastic anemia and agranulocytosis in Saskatchewan: incidence and associations with antecedent prescription drug use.

A population-based study to estimate the incidence of hospitalizations for aplastic anemia and agranulocytosis and to evaluate associations between these disorders and antecedent prescription drug use was performed using the Saskatchewan administrative health care databases. Hospital charts and cancer registration data were utilized to apply strict diagnostic criteria to case identification. Estimates of the annual incidence of aplastic anemia and agranulocytosis were 2.7 and 3.0 per million, which are similar to those from other recent population-based studies with comparable case identificat

Pasteurised donor human milk for HIV-exposed infants in Saskatchewan, Canada: a feasibility trial protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Pasteurised donor human milk (PDHM) provides nutritional and immunological benefits for vulnerable infants, yet its use remains largely restricted to neonatal intensive care units. The protective effects of PDHM are well established for preterm and very low birth weight infants, but little is known about its feasibility and acceptability for other populations, including HIV-exposed infants. In high-income countries, infant feeding guidelines historically prioritised exclusive formula feeding to eliminate HIV transmission through breast milk. More recently, guidance has incorporat

Genomic Analysis Reveals Antibiotic-Susceptible Clones and Emerging Resistance in Neisseria gonorrhoeae in Saskatchewan, Canada.

Whole-genome sequencing was used to identify mutations in antibiotic resistance-conferring genes to compare susceptibility predictions with MICs and to ascertain strain types in 99 isolates of Neisseria gonorrhoeae Genotypes associated with susceptibility, as well as MIC creep or emerging resistance, were noted. Phylogenomic analysis revealed three distinctive clades and putative gonococcal transmission linkages involving a tetracycline-resistant N. gonorrhoeae outbreak and the clonal spread of susceptible isolates in men.

Semen quality and pathological lesions in rams naturally infected with Brucella ovis during an outbreak in Saskatchewan.

This report documents clinical signs, semen parameters, and reproductive organ lesions in rams during a natural Brucella ovis outbreak. Eleven rams from 1 flock underwent 2 breeding soundness evaluations and necropsies. Brucella ovis was isolated from all semen ejaculates and confirmed via whole-genome sequencing. Despite above-threshold scrotal circumferences, all rams were categorized as unsatisfactory due to poor semen quality and leukocytes in semen. Semen motility values in 9 of 11 infected rams and morphologically normal sperm in all infected rams were below the recommended threshold val

Prevalence and determinants of atopy and allergic diseases among school-age children in rural Saskatchewan, Canada.

BACKGROUND: There have been few investigations of farming-related activities or specific characteristics resulting in the associations between those exposures and atopic disease. OBJECTIVE: To study the associations between farm-associated exposures and atopic diseases. METHODS: As part of a longitudinal study of lung health in rural residents, a cross-sectional baseline study was conducted in rural Saskatchewan, Canada. This included an initial survey phase followed by a clinical testing phase. A subsample of 584 children (grades 1-8) completed skin prick testing to assess atopic status. At

Nutrient export in run-off from an in-field cattle overwintering site in East-Central Saskatchewan.

Wintering cattle directly in the field creates potential concerns with water quality, as nutrients added from urine and fecal material over the winter can end up in runoff water, ground water and soil. In 2008/2009 an experiment was conducted to observe the effect of in-field winter feeding of cows on the nutrients in spring snowmelt run-off water. Low temperatures give little opportunity for organic N, urea and ammonium added in the urine and fecal matter to convert to nitrate, resulting in nitrate-N concentrations in snowmelt run-off water that were similar in the control and winter fed area

Laboratory studies on the transmission of western equine encephalitis virus by Saskatchewan mosquitoes. I. Culex tarsalis.

A Saskatchewan strain of the mosquito Culex tarsalis, transmitted a local strain of western equine encephalitis virus from chick to chick, between four and 44 days after an infective blood meal. At incubation temperatures of 69 and 75 degrees F, 120 transmissions occurred out of a possible 141, and all but seven of these were by single infected mosquitoes. At 75 degrees F virus titers in individual mosquitoes were more uniform and transmission was more efficient, than at 69 degrees F, although infection rates were similar at both temperatures. The minimum concentration of virus required to inf

Comparing Humeral Kinematic Variability During Farm Task Performance Between Laboratory and Field Agricultural Settings in Saskatchewan.

OBJECTIVES: Farmers experience high rates of shoulder injury, necessitating the need to better define the movement demands associated with farm work. Research is needed to determine whether simulating farm work in a laboratory environment will sufficiently capture the movement demands required in authentic agricultural environments. The purpose of this study was to compare variability in farm task performance between laboratory and field locations. METHODS: Inertial measurement units tracked humeral kinematics during four simulated farming work tasks (overhead drill, shovel, climb ladder, see

Inflammatory bowel disease characterized by multisystemic eosinophilic epitheliotropic disease (MEED) in a horse in Saskatchewan, Canada.

A 3-year-old Quarter Horse gelding was evaluated for chronic weight loss, diarrhea, and pruritus. Physical examination revealed several ulcerative lesions on the skin and mucosal membranes. Diagnostic imaging findings were consistent with enteritis, typhlitis, and colitis. Multisystemic eosinophilic epitheliotropic disease (MEED) was diagnosed upon necropsy. This disease may be considered a form of equine inflammatory bowel disease complex which can be challenging to diagnose, requiring histological assessment, and in some cases, the use of immunohistochemical markers. Key clinical message: Mu

Can Social Network Analysis Help Address the High Rates of Bacterial Sexually Transmitted Infections in Saskatchewan?

BACKGROUND: Saskatchewan has one of the highest rates of gonorrhea among the Canadian provinces-more than double the national rate. In light of these high rates, and the growing threat of untreatable infections, improved understanding of gonorrhea transmission dynamics in the province and evaluation of the current system and tools for disease control are important. METHODS: We extracted data from a cross-sectional sample of laboratory-confirmed gonorrhea cases between 2003 and 2012 from the notifiable disease files of the Regina Qu'Appelle Health Region. The database was stratified by calenda

PCR-based study of conserved and variable DNA sequences of Tritrichomonas foetus isolates from Saskatchewan, Canada.

The protozoan parasite Tritrichomonas foetus causes infertility and spontaneous abortion in cattle. In Saskatchewan, Canada, the culture prevalence of trichomonads was 65 of 1,048 (6%) among 1,048 bulls tested within a 1-year period ending in April 1994. Saskatchewan was previously thought to be free of the parasite. To confirm the culture results, possible T. foetus DNA presence was determined by the PCR. All of the 16 culture-positive isolates tested were PCR positive by a single-band test, but one PCR product was weak. DNA fingerprinting by both T17 PCR and randomly amplified polymorphic DN

Biofilm Formation and Antimicrobial Susceptibility of E. coli Associated With Colibacillosis Outbreaks in Broiler Chickens From Saskatchewan.

The global poultry industry has grown to the extent that the number of chickens now well exceeds the number of humans on Earth. Escherichia coli infections in poultry cause significant morbidity and economic losses for producers each year. We obtained 94 E. coli isolates from 12 colibacillosis outbreaks on Saskatchewan farms and screened them for antimicrobial resistance and biofilm formation. Fifty-six isolates were from broilers with confirmed colibacillosis, and 38 isolates were from healthy broilers in the same flocks (cecal E. coli). Resistance to penicillins, tetracyclines, and aminoglyc
