BACKGROUND: Moulds are often wrongly considered contaminants, not very sensitive to conventional antifungal treatments, but they may cause ungual hyphomycosis, particularly Aspergillus. Due to the lack of precise diagnostic criteria, their real impact is underestimated.
OBJECTIVES: Retrospective descriptive analysis of all ungual hyphomycosis cases diagnosed at Montpellier Hospital from 1991 to 2019 to: (i) determine the incidence of onychomycosis by pseudo-dermatophytes and moulds; (ii) perform an epidemiological analysis of nail aspergillosis; and (iii) provide simple criteria for mould inv

OBJECTIVES: To determine the normal conjunctival bacterial and fungal flora in healthy rabbits, to compare the fungal flora from the conjunctival sac with periocular cutaneous fungal flora and to evaluate potential changes in type of micro-organisms over time.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Samples from 50 pet rabbits with a normal ophthalmic examination were obtained from conjunctival sacs using sterile cotton swabs and from the interpupillary skin space using a piece of sterile carpet. Samples were collected twice, 4 weeks apart, and cultured to evaluate bacterial and fungal populations.
RESULTS:

BACKGROUND: Podiatric physicians routinely use electric drills for the treatment of nail and skin conditions. The grinding process produces human nail and skin dust that is generally vacuumed into bags in the grinding unit. Many of the nails are thought to be mycotic, particularly because they are obtained from patients with symptoms of dermatophyte infections. Currently, there is limited information available on the detection of fungi from nail dust samples. Herein, we attempt to address this situation and outline some of the difficulties that pathology laboratories face in isolating and iden

BACKGROUND: Non-dermatophyte onychomycosis (NDO) is caused by a wide range of mold fungi other than dermatophytes, and has been reported at various rates in different countries worldwide. Studies on the incidence of NDO in the community are essential for understanding its epidemiology and control, as well as for the appropriate treatment of these infections.
OBJECTIVES: In this study, the incidence of NDO in Tehran, Iran, was compared to the incidence of onychomycoses due to dermatophytes and yeasts.
METHODS: From 2014 through 2015, samples from a total of 1,069 patients with suspected funga

BACKGROUND: Dermatophytes are the main cause of onychomycoses, but various nondermatophyte filamentous fungi are often isolated from abnormal nails. The correct identification of the aetiological agent of nail infections is necessary in order to recommend appropriate treatment.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate a rapid polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) assay based on 28S rDNA for fungal identification in nails on a large number of samples in comparison with cultures.
METHODS: Infectious fungi were analysed using PCR-RFLP in 410 nail samples in which fungal el

BACKGROUND: Until now, definite diagnosis of dermatophytic onychia has been made by taking a nail sample and placing it in culture. The result is usually obtained only after 2 to 3weeks. More recently, diagnosis within a few minutes after sampling has become possible thanks to an immunochromatography technique developed in Japan and now available in France: the Diafactory Tinea Unguium® test strip (Biosynex, France).
METHODS: Over a 12-month period, 80nail samples from 80patients giving rise to a positive fungal culture were included in the study. For each patient, part of the removed nail wa

The aim of the present study was to obtain information on the occurrence of bacteria and eumycetes in ready-to-eat fermented liver sausages manufactured by 20 artisan producers located in the Marche Region (Italy). To this end, culture-dependent analyses and metataxonomic sequencing were carried out. Physico-chemical parameters and volatilome of the fermented liver sausages were also studied. Finally, the presence of hepatitis E virus (HEV) was also assessed via real-time-RT-(q)PCR assays. Active microbial populations mainly represented by lactic acid bacteria, enterococci, coagulase-negative

Dermatomycoses are caused most commonly by dermatophytes. The anthropophilic dermatophyte Trichophyton rubrum is still the most frequent causative agent worldwide. Keratinolytic enzymes, e.g. hydrolases and keratinases, are important virulence factors of T. rubrum. Recently, the cysteine dioxygenase was found as new virulence factor. Predisposing host factors play a similarly important role for the development of dermatophytosis of the skin and nails. Chronic venous insufficiency, diabetes mellitus, disorders of cellular immunity, and genetic predisposition should be considered as risk factors

Dermatomycoses affect free skin, hairy scalp, fingernails and toenails. In addition, oral mucosa and genital mucosa can also be affected by fungal infections. The most common pathogens causing skin fungal infections are dermatophytes. They are responsible for, among others, tinea corporis, tinea capitis and onychomycosis (tinea unguium). Mainly anthropophilic dermatophytes are found as pathogens. In the case of tinea capitis-at least in Europe and in German-speaking countries-zoophilic skin fungi must also be considered. Rarely, geophilic dermatophytes can also be isolated. Yeast infections of

Entomopathogen-based biocontrol is crucial for blocking the transmission of vector-borne diseases; however, few cross-latitudinal investigations of entomopathogens have been reported for vectors transmitting woody plant diseases in forest ecosystems. The pine sawyer beetle Monochamus alternatus is an important wood borer and a major vector transmitting pine wilt disease, facilitating invasion of the pinewood nematode Bursaphelenchus xylophilus (PWN) in China. Due to the limited geographical breadth of sampling regions, species diversity of fungal associates (especially entomopathogenic fungi)

Fungi and mycotoxin contamination of feed poses a significant risk to broiler chickens (BC) and humans, as well as lowering feed quality. This study assessed fungal contamination of BC rations at Sohag Governorate, Egypt, throughout the year and evaluated aflatoxigenicity (AFTG) of Aspergillus flavus (A. flavus) isolates as well as antifungal activity (AA) of curcumin nanoparticles (Cur-NPs) and Saccharomyces cerevisiae (S. cerevisiae) against aflatoxigenic (AFT) A. flavus isolates. Mycological examination revealed that 92.9% of the investigated rations were contaminated by fungi, and total mo

BACKGROUND: Non-dermatophytic onychomycoses represent 1.45-17.6% of all fungal nail infections. Epidemiological studies have shown that Aspergillus spp. are emerging fungal agents of toenail onychomycosis. Indeed, after Scopulariopsis spp. the genus Aspergillus is the second most common agent of non-dermatophytic onychomycosis. The diagnosis and treatment of toenail onychomycosis caused by non-dermatophyte moulds are not always straightforward.
OBJECTIVES: The aims of this study were to describe the clinical appearance of toenail onychomycosis due to Aspergillus spp., to investigate the patho
