Visual field defects are a world-wide concern, and the proportion of the population experiencing vision loss is ever increasing. Macular degeneration and glaucoma are among the four leading causes of permanent vision loss. Identifying and characterizing visual field losses from gaze alone could prove crucial in the future for screening tests, rehabilitation therapies, and monitoring. In this experiment, 54 participants took part in a free-viewing task of visual scenes while experiencing artificial scotomas (central and peripheral) of varying radii in a gaze-contingent paradigm. We studied the

BACKGROUND: The aim of this work is to investigate the facial distortion (dysmorphopsia) experienced by patients with homonymous paracentral scotomas and to analyze the interrelationship with the previously described "thin man" phenomenon.
METHODS: Routine neuro-ophthalmological examination and brain MRI in three patients who suffered from small homonymous paracentral scotomas due to infarction or arteriovenous malformations of the occipital lobe. They all complained of distortion and shrinkage of their interlocutor's face contralateral to the brain lesion. The phenomenon appeared some second

A 24-year-old female presented with a new scotoma in her left eye one week after testing positive for COVID-19. Fundoscopy revealed an inferonasal perifoveal retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) lesion in the left eye. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) displayed an area of outer retinal defect involving the photoreceptor layer with ellipsoid zone disruption. OCT angiography (OCTA) showed decreased reflectivity in the deep capillary plexus of the affected area. The patient was diagnosed with acute macular neuroretinopathy (AMN) and monitored without treatment. At a one-month follow-up, minimal imp

PURPOSE: to report a case of acute macular neuroretinopathy occurring after intravitreal aflibercept injection for macular edema due to CRVO.
OBSERVATIONS: Two days after Aflibercept intravitreal injection, the patient developed vision loss associated with a central scotoma. Optical coherence tomography showed a hyperreflective band at the level of the outer nuclear/outer plexiform layer corresponding to the patient's scotoma, ruling in the diagnosis of acute macular neuroretinopahty. Even though the OCT abnormalities resolved spontaneously, only partial resolution of the scotoma was observed

Since 1980 I have examined some 1650 patients for the presence or absence of antimalarial maculopathy. Bilateral, irreversible visual field defects have been diagnosed is 62 patients, 37 of whom have been followed for at least 4 years. The 22 patients who presented with relative scotomas did not lose central visual acuity; over a median follow-up period of 6.0 years 33 (75%) of the eyes maintained their visual field, 5 (11%) showed some improvement in visual field, 4 (9%) lost some visual field, and 2 (4%) manifested small absolute scotomas. Nine (60%) of the 15 patients who presented with abs

Retrobulbar neuritis is a common clinical manifestation of multiple sclerosis. We evaluated and compared the results of visual field and fundus examinations, visual evoked response and nuclear magnetic resonance of the brain in 37 patients with the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis and retrobulbar neuritis. Diffuse, peripheral scotomas seemed to be the most often found scotomas on perimetry in these patients. In contrary, central scotomas formed just a little part of the visual field defects. Each threshold increasing of 0.10 log. units on perimetry was followed by increased latencies of 2.5 ms.

Macular degeneration (MD) compromises both high-acuity vision and eye movements when the foveal regions of both eyes are affected. Individuals with MD adapt to central field loss by adopting a preferred retinal locus (PRL) for fixation. Here, we investigate how individuals with bilateral MD use eye movements to search for targets in a visual scene under realistic binocular viewing conditions. Five individuals with binocular scotomata, 3 individuals with monocular scotomata and 6 age-matched controls participated in our study. We first extensively mapped the binocular scotoma with an eyetracker

Characteristic visual symptoms and signs in 12 patients with neoplasms or aneurysms involving the optic tract are summarized. Blurred vision was the most common initial manifestation. Optic atrophy became apparent in 7 of the 12 patients. Most patients had uniocular central scotomas with reduced visual acuity, and 2 had homonymous scotomas. Field defects were frequently incomplete and incongruous, combining central scotomas with elements of homonymous and bitemporal amblyopias. Seven patients had endocrine disturbances and memory deficits in addition to their visual symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Identification of visual field loss in people with retinal disease is not straightforward as people with eye disease are frequently unaware of substantial deficits in their visual field, as a consequence of perceptual completion ("filling-in") of affected areas.
METHODOLOGY: We attempted to induce a compelling visual illusion known as the induced twinkle after-effect (TwAE) in eight patients with retinal scotomas. Half of these patients experience filling-in of their scotomas such that they are unaware of the presence of their scotoma, and conventional campimetric techniques can n

Injury to the primary visual cortex (V1) typically leads to loss of conscious vision in the corresponding, homonymous region of the contralateral visual hemifield (scotoma). Several studies suggest that V1 is highly plastic after injury to the visual pathways, whereas others have called this conclusion into question. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to measure area V1 population receptive field (pRF) properties in five patients with partial or complete quadrantic visual field loss as a result of partial V1+ or optic radiation lesions. Comparisons were made with healthy cont

Purtscher's retinopathy is a rare complication after trauma to the chest or bone fractures. We report about a patient, which we examined 6 months after a serious car accident. Visual acuity was 20/20 in both eyes. Examination with the Amsler grid revealed a paracentral scotoma in the left eye. In the fluorescein angiography of the left eye performed with a scanning laser ophthalmoscope we found capillary dropout, which corresponded well to the scotoma. Measured by digital image analysis, the area of the foveal avascular zone was eccentrically enlarged by a factor of 4. The mean perifoveal inte
