AIM: It has been reported that glial cells are involved in Alzheimer's disease (AD). In our previous research, Scutellaria barbata flavonoids (SBFs) were found to protect the AD-like rats from neuronal disorder and memory impairment; however, the effect of SBFs on the glial cells disorder in AD-like rats has been less studied. The effects of SBFs on astrocytes (ASs), microglial cells (MGs), and oligodendrocytes (Ols), as well as heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70) and apolipoprotein E (ApoE), were investigated in the present study.
METHODS: The successful model rats, screened by Morris water maze,

The bioactive components extracted from Scutellariae radix and Rhei rhizoma (SR) have been commonly used to treat liver diseases. The aim of this study was to verify the underlying mechanisms and antifibrotic effects of ethanol extract from the herbal combinatorial formula (SRE) in a dimethylnitrosamine (DMN)-administered rat model, with functional proteome tools. Our results indicated that the hepatic collagen content and alpha-smooth muscle actin expression were obviously alleviated by treatment with SRE. Comprehensive proteomics revealed global protein changes, and the network analysis impl

Scutellaria Radix (SR), the dried root of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi, has been traditionally used as an antipyretic and analgesic agent. Genetically modified SR (GS), engineered to enhance the active constituents baicalin (BA), baicalein (BE), and wogonin (WG), was hypothesized to exhibit enhanced efficacy at equal or lower doses. Although the pharmacological properties of SR have been reported previously, its therapeutic potential in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the therapeutic potential of GS compared with SR in a mouse model of RA. The efficacy

This study gives new insights to understand the type of interactions between Ginkgo biloba L. and Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi, two Chinese medicinal plants with well documented neuroprotective effects, on three targets in Alzheimer's disease (AD): acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholnesterase (BuChE) inhibition and hydrogen peroxide scavenging. Individual samples, binary mixtures with different proportions of both plant species, and also a commercial multicomponent combination containing both plants together with unroasted Coffea arabica L. and quercetin-3-O-rutinoside were used to p

Scutellaria barbata D. Don (SB) is a well known formula in traditional Chinese medicine, which exhibits potent anticancer effects on various cancers. Many miRNAs play crucial roles in the regulation of cancer, for instance, miR‑34a functions as a tumor suppressor, and is often downregulated during cancer. In this study, we investigated the role of ECSB in suppressing the growth of human colon cancer HCT‑8 cells, and whether this is mediated by regulation of miR‑34a and its downstream target genes, using real-time PCR and western blot analysis. ECSB treatment significantly inhibited the prolife

It is now well documented that a large proportion of breast tumors express their own aromatase. This intratumoral aromatase produces estrogen in situ and therefore may contribute significantly to the amount of estrogen to which the cell is exposed. Thus it is not only important that aromatase inhibitors potently inhibit the peripheral production of estrogen and eliminate the external supply of estrogen to the tumor cell, but that they in addition potently inhibit intratumoral aromatase and prevent the tumor cell from making its own estrogen within the cell. To study the inhibition of intracell

The genus Scutellaria (Lamiaceae) is a phytochemically rich and medicinally important group of plants. Scutellaria species have been characterized by biologically active flavonoids such as baicalin, baicalein, and wogonin. In the present study, the essential oils of S. angustifolia, S. baicalensis, S. barbata, and S. lateriflora, cultivated in eastern Oregon, were obtained by means of hydrodistillation and analyzed using gas chromatographic methods. We hypothesize that the essential oils have compositions that may play a role in the traditional uses and biological activities of the genus. The

Excess cortisol release is associated with numerous health concerns, including psychiatric issues (i.e., anxiety, insomnia, and depression) and nonpsychiatric issues (i.e., osteoporosis). The aim of this study was to assess the in vitro inhibition of cortisol release, bioaccessibility, and bioavailability exerted by a chemically characterized Scutellaria lateriflora L. extract (SLE). The treatment of H295R cells with SLE at increasing, noncytotoxic, concentrations (5-30 ng/mL) showed significant inhibition of cortisol release ranging from 58 to 91%. The in vitro simulated gastric, duodenal, an

Nine flavonoids were isolated and identified from a chloroform-soluble fraction of the roots of Scutellaria baicalensis through a bioactivity-guided fractionation using a proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) monitoring assay in HepG2 cells. All structures were established by interpreting the corresponding spectroscopic data and comparing measured values from those in the literature. All compounds were assessed for their ability to inhibit PCSK9 mRNA expression; compounds 1 (3,7,2'-trihydroxy-5-methoxy-flavanone) and 4 (skullcapflavone II) were found to suppress PCSK9 mRNA via

Scutellaria barbata D. Don (Lamiaceae; SB) inhibited the growth of uterine leiomyomal (LM) cells with unknown actions. The expression patterns of beta-adrenergic receptors (beta-ARs) in human uterine LM cells and functional coupling to gene expression have also been investigated. Northern blot analysis showed that beta-AR subtypes are expressed at different levels in the uterine LM cells and myometrial smooth muscle cells (SMCs). beta1-AR expression was to be found approximately at the same level in the two cell types. beta2-ARs were expressed at higher levels in uterine LM cells than that in

BACKGROUND: Our previous clinical research showed that the interaction between gut microbiota and bile acids (BAs) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) changed significantly. We hypothesized that T2DM could be improved by adjusting this interaction mediated by farnesoid X receptor (FXR). T2DM belongs to the category of "xiaoke" in traditional Chinese medicine. Radix scutellariae has the effects of clearing away heat and eliminating dampness, curing jaundice and quenching thirst and is widely used alone or in combination with other medicines for the treatment of T2DM in China and th

Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi (SBG) is recognized as a species with both medicinal and nutritional value, exhibiting extensive pharmacological activities and edible value. SBG from multiple origins and in two distinct specifications is widely available in the market at the present time. A rapid and accurate analytical method was developed by combining machine learning with metabolomics strategies to discriminate between two specifications and four sources of SBG, and to identify their respective differential markers (DMs). The establishment of a qualitative identification model to distinguish
