Human IgG subclass responses and subclass restriction to Schistosoma mansoni egg antigens.

In areas endemic for schistosomiasis, there is great heterogeneity in antibody isotype responses to parasite antigens amongst infected individuals. At the population level, the isotype composition of antibody responses undergoes dynamic changes which are associated with the age of infected individuals. Here we examine the IgG subclass responses to Schistosoma mansoni eggs (soluble egg antigens; SEA) of infected individuals by immunoblot and ELISA. By controlled treatment of SEA-coated ELISA plates and immunoblot nitrocellular strips with sodium periodate, in order to oxidize terminal carbohydr

Coastal aquaculture in Bangladesh: Sundarbans's role against climate change.

The Sundarbans, a natural shield on earth, is one and only place that has many noteworthy environmental and geographical values with breathtaking natural beauties. Near the Sundarbans area, proliferation of aquaculture in this delta contributes appreciably to the national economy. Although aquaculture has become a means of daily livelihood, this sector is nevertheless threatened by a complex of climate change impacts. Cyclones, rising temperatures, rising sea levels, coastal flooding, and erosion make coastal farming difficult. As a panacea, the Sundarbans can play a critical role in preservin

Analysis of potential drivers of spatial and temporal changes in anisakid larvae infection levels in European hake, Merluccius merluccius (L.), from the North-East Atlantic fishing grounds.

We analysed the spatial and temporal variability of Anisakis larvae infection in hake (Merluccius merluccius) from the North-East Atlantic from 1998 to 2020 and the potential drivers (i.e., environmental and host abundance) of such variation. The results showed that hake from separate sea areas in the North Atlantic have marked differences in temporal abundance levels. Hake larger than 60 cm were all parasitized in all ICES (International Council for the Exploration of the Sea) subareas 6, 7, and 8. The belly flaps were the most parasitized parts of the flesh, accounting for 92% of the total.

Quantifying associations between local climate zones on land surface temperature: new insights from coastal areas of Italy.

Coastal regions across Europe face rising sea levels and climate change-related extreme weather conditions such as more frequent and intense heat waves, floods, droughts, and storms. As climate change and rapid urbanization continue to pose significant challenges to the resilience of cities, knowledge from LCZ studies has the potential to generate targeted adaptation strategies that address the unique thermal performance characteristics of different urban areas. A range of physical characteristics, such as the density and type of buildings, the presence of vegetation and the amount of impervio

Residence times of English estuaries.

The residence time of estuaries is a fundamental indicator of biogeochemical cycling, ecological productivity, pollution, and human health risk. Residence times of UK estuaries are estimated to vary from days to weeks, depending on tidal and riverine variability, as well as estuary size and shape; yet are largely unquantified for present-day and future climate conditions. This study presents the first national-scale modelling assessment of residence times across 52 English estuaries, using a consistent framework of high-resolution bathymetry and hydrodynamic modelling (Delft3D-FM). Simulations

Groundwater and soil moisture data collected in the coastal critical zone of the Delmarva Peninsula, United States.

Data presented in this paper were collected from three agricultural and three forested sites along the Delmarva Peninsula, United States between March 2021 and July 2024. The six study sites border salt marsh and have experienced agricultural loss or forest loss from marsh migration driven by sea-level rise, saltwater and freshwater flooding events, and droughts. The study sites were subdivided into 4 zones each: healthy, marginal, transitional, and marsh. Hydrological monitoring equipment was installed in each zone to study space-for-time changes from healthy marsh to healthy upland. Groundwa

Paleo aridity in the Levant driven by a strong North Atlantic latitudinal surface temperature gradient and present-day relevance.

The mechanisms underlying the current greenhouse gas (GHG) forced decline in Mediterranean rainfall remain a matter of debate. To inform our understanding of the current and projected drying, we examined extended arid intervals in the late Quaternary, Eastern Mediterranean (EM) Levant indicated by substantial salt deposits in a Dead Sea sediment core covering the past 220 kyr. These arid events occurred during interglacials, when the Earth was at perihelion to the sun in boreal fall and during glacial-interglacial transitions, associated with icesheet melting. Climate models forced with realis

Impacts of periodic saltwater inundation on heavy metals in soils from the Pearl River Delta, China.

The alluvial plain delta is vulnerable to complex land-sea interactions as a result of rising sea levels and increasing storm surges due to global environmental change. Topsoil samples (0-20 cm) from the Pearl River Delta (PRD) were subjected to periodic artificial saltwater inundation treatments with varying salinities (0, 35‰, 40‰, 50‰) for 50 days to explore the impacts of saltwater inundation on heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Zn) in soils. The inundation treatments reached dynamic equilibrium in approximately 20 days, and heavy metals were promoted to release into leachate. The extraction rate of h

Reservoir sedimentation diminishes water storage and coastal delta resiliency.

Surface water storage in dammed reservoirs diminishes over time due to sediment accumulation. Here, we applied the RATTES model to predict storage loss and sedimentation at 57,117 reservoirs across the continental United States (1700-2050), resulting in cumulative reservoir sediment volumes of 63.8 km3 by 2025 and 83.0 km3 by 2050. Although cumulative storage loss is 7.7%, over two-fifths of reservoirs have lost more than 25% of designed storage capacity. The equivalent sediment mass is 61.3 Gt, exceeding the annual global fluvial sediment load by a factor of seven. If coastal deltas received

Phylogeographic Evidence for 2 Genetically Distinct Zoonotic Plasmodium knowlesi Parasites, Malaysia.

Infections of humans with the zoonotic simian malaria parasite Plasmodium knowlesi occur throughout Southeast Asia, although most cases have occurred in Malaysia, where P. knowlesi is now the dominant malaria species. This apparently skewed distribution prompted an investigation of the phylogeography of this parasite in 2 geographically separated regions of Malaysia, Peninsular Malaysia and Malaysian Borneo. We investigated samples collected from humans and macaques in these regions. Haplotype network analyses of sequences from 2 P. knowlesi genes, type A small subunit ribosomal 18S RNA and cy

Can periodic breathing have advantages for oxygenation?

A model of the chemoreceptor mediated control of breathing is analysed. Hypoxia is simulated as low equilibrium arterial oxygen both at altitude and at sea level. Conditions for stable and unstable equilibria are examined. Transition to instability leads to periodic breathing and the model predicts that this can cause arterial oxygen to oscillate asymmetrically about the equilibrium in some cases, causing the average to rise. Periodic forcing functions have been applied to cerebral blood flow with the same effect on arterial oxygen. Such asymmetric oscillations leading to enhanced oxygenation

The saline groundwater legacy of a large buried coastal paleo-estuary.

Elevated groundwater salinity in coastal regions threatens the beneficial use of fresh groundwater. Coastal groundwater management typically focuses on preventing intrusion from modern sources of seawater; however, past geological processes can also leave a legacy of saline groundwater now hidden in the subsurface. Here, multiple extensive airborne electromagnetic surveys provide detailed evidence of residual salinity from a paleo-estuary filling a late Pleistocene incised valley impacting more than 10,000 km2 that is now hidden beneath coastal Louisiana's deltaic plain. Our results show that

Drivers of barrier island water-table fluctuations and groundwater salinization.

Barrier islands are threatened by climate change as sea-level rise and higher frequency storm surge lead to more flooding and saltwater intrusion. Vegetation plays a vital role in preventing erosion of barrier islands due to aeolian and hydrological forces. However, vegetation on barrier islands is threatened by rising water tables causing hypoxic conditions and storm-surge overwash introducing saline water to the root zone. To better protect barrier island ecosystems, it is critical to identify the relative influence of different hydrological drivers on water table elevation and salinity, and

Multiyear tropical warm pool warming drives slowdown in Antarctic mass loss.

Antarctic mass loss has been a major contributor to global sea-level rise for most of the last few decades, mainly driven by West Antarctica1. During 2021-2023, however, a sharp increase in surface mass balance over Queen Mary Land and Wilkes Land in East Antarctica offset West Antarctic loss and slowed the rate of total ice mass loss2,3. Although this slowdown is consistent with the expected long-term precipitation response to global warming through poleward-shifted storm tracks and Antarctic moistening4, our results point to a different mechanism. Here we show that the recent ice mass gain w

GIS, Remote Sensing and Machine Learning: Data Integration to Support the Management of Coastal Island Ecosystems.

Islands are important components of many coastal areas around the world; however, by virtue of their geographical isolation, the state of these ecosystems is often poorly known. To address the knowledge gap for the province of Nova Scotia, Canada, geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing (RS), and machine learning (ML) were used to examine the status of nearly 4000 islands. We classified islands topographically and determined, based on 1 m resolution LiDAR, that approximately 70% are <2 m average elevation and highly vulnerable to partial or complete flooding under near-term regime

Sonarlogger: Enabling long-term underwater sonar observations.

Coastal seas are under increasing pressure from extreme weather events and sea level rise, resulting in impacts such as changing hydrodynamic conditions, coastal erosion, and marine heat waves. To monitor changes in coastal marine habitats, such as reefs and macrophytes meadows, which add to the resilience of our coasts, consistent, medium- to long-term seafloor observations are needed. This project aims to deliver repeated, high-frequency sonar surveys on a stationary seabed mooring of a specific target area over a period of up to several months. A new stand-alone subsea system, the Sonarlogg

Projected impacts of 21st century climate change on diapause in Calanus finmarchicus.

Diapause plays a key role in the life cycle of high latitude zooplankton. During diapause, animals avoid starving in winter by living in deep waters where metabolism is lower and met by lipid reserves. Global warming is therefore expected to shorten the maximum potential diapause duration by increasing metabolic rates and by reducing body size and lipid reserves. This will alter the phenology of zooplankton, impact higher trophic levels and disrupt biological carbon pumps. Here, we project the impacts of climate change on the key North Atlantic copepod Calanus finmarchicus under IPCC RCP 8.5.

Risk classification of low-lying coral reef islands and their exposure to climate threats.

The bio-physical responses of low-lying coral islands to climate change are of concern. These islands exist across a broad range of bio-physical conditions, and vulnerabilities to rising and warming seas, ocean acidification and increased storminess. We propose a risk-based classification that scores 6 island eco-morphometric attributes and 6 bio-physical ocean/climate conditions from recent open-access data, to assign islands with respect to 5 risk classes (Very Low, Low, Moderate, High and Very High). The potential responses of 56 coral islands in Australia's jurisdiction (Coral Sea, NW Shel

Efficacy of emamectin benzoate against sea lice infestations of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L.: evaluation in the absence of an untreated contemporary control.

The efficacy of emamectin benzoate (SLICE) against sea lice infestations of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., is typically assessed using untreated fish, or fish treated with alternative therapeutants, as controls. The State of Maine, USA, is currently under active management for the OIE-notifiable pathogen, infectious salmon anaemia virus (ISAV); consequently, neither control group is feasible in this region. Untreated salmon risk extensive damage from the ectoparasites, and threaten to increase vector-borne exposure or susceptibility of farms to ISAV; and the only treatment presently availabl
