The dental pathology of northern elephant seals (Mirounga angustirostris).

Skulls (n=104) of northern elephant seals from California were examined macroscopically. The animals varied in age but the numbers of each sex were roughly equal. The majority (86%) of teeth were available for examination. The mandibular first premolars were the most common teeth to be congenitally absent, with 2.3% missing. Supernumerary teeth (usually a supplemental mandibular molar) were associated with only 1.4% of normal teeth (or empty alveolar sockets). At least one persistent deciduous tooth was present in 38% of skulls, 70% of which were juvenile skulls. The majority (95.8%) of premol

Leptospirosis in northern elephant seals (Mirounga angustirostris) stranded along the California coast.

Leptospirosis was identified in six northern elephant seals (Mirounga angustirostris) that were stranded in 1995 along the coast of California (USA). Histologic lesions in all seals included tubulointerstitial nephritis with tubular degeneration and necrosis. Infection was confirmed through identification of spirochetes using an immunohistochemical stain for Leptospira sp. antigens. One affected seal had an elevated titer to Leptospira interrogans serovar pomona. Four of the six seals developed leptospirosis during rehabilitation, and two seals had evidence of exposure in the wild. Potential s

Modelling the spread of phocine distemper virus among harbour seals.

Data presented in earlier publications on the 1988 epizootic among seals in North West Europe show a pattern that is somewhat inconsistent with the predictions of the standard mathematical model of epidemics. We argue that for animals living in herds or colonies, such as seals, the mutual contact behaviour is such that models for the transmission of infectious diseases should be applied with special care for the distinction between numbers and densities. This is demonstrated by using a mechanistic description of the contacts among seals, which leads to a slightly different formulation of the m

Leptospirosis in rehabilitated Pacific harbor seals from California.

Renal disease was observed in two rehabilitated Pacific harbor seals (Phoca vitulina richardsii) from a facility in California (USA). The seals had leukocytosis and high serum phosphorus, blood urea nitrogen and creatinine concentrations. A retrospective study of leptospiral antibody serum titers indicated both seals had elevated titers to Leptospira interrogans serovar grippotyphosa. A third seal, which died about the time when the index cases occurred, also had elevated titers to L. interrogans serovar grippotyphosa. Post mortem histopathologic examination of all three seals showed tubular n

The life cycle of Contracaecum osculatum (Rudolphi, 1802) sensu stricto (Nematoda, Ascaridoidea, Anisakidae) in view of experimental infections.

Hatched, ensheathed third-stage larvae of Contracaecum osculatum, 300-320 microns long, were shown to be infective to copepods, to nauplius larvae of Balanus and to small specimens of fishes (sticklebacks, O-group eelpout). Other fishes such as gobies and small flatfishes became infected by ingesting infected crustaceans. Cod were infected by being given infected small fishes. In the crustacean paratenic hosts, little growth of the larvae occurred, if any. In the liver sinusoids of sticklebacks and gobies the length of most of the unencapsulated third-stage larvae had not even doubled within 6

Nasal mites (Acari:Halarachnidae) in the spotted seal, Phoca largha Pallas, and other pinnipeds of Alaskan waters.

The nasal passages of 349 pinnipeds of seven species were examined for halarachnid mites. Each of seven Steller sea lions (Eumetopias jubatus), 75 of 99 harbor seals (Phoca vitulina), and four of 71 spotted seals (P. largha) were infected, but none of 28 walruses (Odobenus rosmarus), 43 ringed seals (Phoca hispida), 58 ribbon seals (P. fasciata), and 43 bearded seals (Erignathus barbatus) was infected. The sea lions harbored Orthohalarachne attenuata (Banks, 1910) and O. diminuata (Doetschman, 1944), and the harbor and spotted seals harbored Halarachne halichoeri Allman, 1847. The finding of H

Top-Down and Bottom-Up Processes Jointly Explain Mesopredator Movement and Foraging Ecology.

Prey availability and predation risk drive animal distribution, movement, and foraging ecology, yet studies rarely analyse multiple predator-prey levels together. Understanding how predators optimise risk-reward tradeoffs is important for species conservation and management, especially in systems facing extreme ecosystem change. We examined how top-down (modelled polar bear habitat selection) and bottom-up (modelled fish diversity) processes influence the habitat selection, movement, and foraging behaviour of 26 ringed seals (greater than 70,000 dives and 10,000 locations over 877 seal days).

Accumulation of CO2 limits energy gain in freely diving grey seals.

Understanding how gas regulation impacts behavioural and physiological processes in phocid seals is essential to understanding their foraging ecology. The accumulation of circulating CO2 across a series of dives is thought to prolong surface recovery, thereby reducing foraging efficiency. This can be empirically tested by experimentally altering circulating gas tensions in diving seals and quantifying the effect on net rate of energy gain. In the present study, six grey seals (Halichoerus grypus) voluntarily dove in a simulated foraging setup, swimming from a breathing chamber to and from an u

Climate variations and a local PCB hotspot have altered metabolomic profiles in ringed seals.

Environmental contaminants and climate change pose ongoing threats to Arctic marine mammals, yet their combined physiological impacts remain poorly understood. Here, we analyzed 234 metabolites in liver (n = 27, from 2010 to 2011) and serum/plasma (n = 38, from 2009 to 2011) to assess the health of ringed seals exposed to a local polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) "hotspot" as well as other co-occurring contaminants from long-range sources. Demographic analyses revealed significant age and sex differences, with adult males carrying higher ∑PCB and ∑DDT (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane) concentrati

Presence of DNA from Chlamydia-like organisms in the nasal cavities of grey seal pups (Halichoerus grypus) and three different substrates present in a breeding colony.

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia-like organisms (CLO) have been found to be present in many environmental niches, including human sewage and agricultural run-off, as well as in a number of aquatic species worldwide. Therefore, monitoring their presence in sentinel wildlife species may be useful in assessing the wider health of marine food webs in response to habitat loss, pollution and disease. We used nasal swabs from live (n = 42) and dead (n = 50) pre-weaned grey seal pups and samples of differing natal substrates (n = 8) from an off-shore island devoid of livestock and permanent human habitation to d

An evaluation of three-dimensional photogrammetric and morphometric techniques for estimating volume and mass in Weddell seals Leptonychotes weddellii.

Body mass dynamics of animals can indicate critical associations between extrinsic factors and population vital rates. Photogrammetry can be used to estimate mass of individuals in species whose life histories make it logistically difficult to obtain direct body mass measurements. Such studies typically use equations to relate volume estimates from photogrammetry to mass; however, most fail to identify the sources of error between the estimated and actual mass. Our objective was to identify the sources of error that prevent photogrammetric mass estimation from directly predicting actual mass,

ACUTE-PHASE RESPONSES IN HEALTHY, MALNOURISHED, AND OTOSTRONGYLUS-INFECTED JUVENILE NORTHERN ELEPHANT SEALS (MIROUNGA ANGUSTIROSTRIS).

Acute-phase proteins (APPs) are utilized to detect early inflammation in many domestic and nondomestic species, but variability exists between species and inflammatory diseases as to which APPs are most useful. Stranded juvenile northern elephant seals (NESs; Mirounga angustirostris) undergoing rehabilitation at the Marine Mammal Center experience high mortality rates due to severe arteritis caused by the lungworm, Otostrongylus circumlitis (OC), and there are currently no effective antemortem diagnostic tools for this disease. To characterize patterns of the acute-phase response in the NES, t

ANTIDOG IgG SECONDARY ANTIBODY SUCCESSFULLY DETECTS IgG IN A VARIETY OF AQUATIC MAMMALS.

Serological tests play an important role in the detection of wildlife diseases. However, while there are many commercial assays and reagents available for domestic species, there is a need to develop efficient serological assays for wildlife. In recent years, marine mammals have represented a wildlife group with emerging infectious diseases, such as influenza, brucellosis, and leptospirosis. However, with the exception of disease-agent-specific assays or functional assays, few reports describe the use of antibody detection assays in marine mammals. In an indirect enzyme-linked immunoassay (EIA

Evidence of Brucella infection in marine mammals in the North Atlantic Ocean.

Between 1983 and 1996 a total of 1386 samples of serum were taken from four species of seal and three species of whale in the waters west of Iceland, the area of pack-ice north-west of Jan Mayen, the northern coast of Norway and the Kola Peninsula, the waters west of Svalbard, and the Barents Sea; they were tested for the presence of anti-Brucella antibodies with an indirect ELISA (protein G conjugate). The positive sera were re-tested with classical brucellosis serological tests, such as the serum agglutination test, the EDTA-modified serum agglutination test, the Rose Bengal test, and the co

Plasma melatonin concentration in neonatal northern elephant seals, Mirounga angustirostris.

The development of pineal function in northern elephant seals was examined in an attempt to understand the physiological basis for previously observed high daytime levels of melatonin in neonatal southern elephant seals. Pineal glands from four northern elephant seal pups, estimated age less than 1 week, weighted 3.0 +/- 0.80 g, which was significantly less than that previously found in southern elephant seals (4.6 +/- 0.35 g). Midday concentrations of plasma melatonin in pups averaged more than 3000 pmol/l in the first 5 days post-partum, but declined rapidly to less than 400 pmol/l after day

A first comprehensive quantification of microplastic contamination in the gastrointestinal tract of endangered caspian seals (Pusa caspica) from the Caspian Sea.

Microplastics (MPs) are considered a serious threat to the Caspian seal (Pusa caspica), an endangered species, apex predator, and bioindicator in the Caspian Sea. The first assessment of MP ingestion in Caspian seals is presented in this work. For this purpose, the gastrointestinal tracts (GITs) of 17 Caspian seal carcasses along the southern Caspian Sea coast were examined. Alkaline digestion and density separation methods were used to extract MPs. The morphology, size, and color of particles larger than 50 μm were visually detected and categorized, and Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spec

Perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) exposure in ringed seals (Pusa saimensis) in Lake Saimaa, Finland.

Perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) is common in the environment, highly accumulative, toxic, and thus a good indicator for per- and polyfluorinated alkyl acid (PFAS) contamination. In this study, PFOS was analysed from the tissues of Saimaa ringed seal (Pusa saimensis) pups and adults to investigate the exposure to PFAS in Lake Saimaa. Additionally, a toxicity evaluation was performed for the seals based on the thresholds from the literature, PFOS concentration data from the national exposure database, and the current study. For all studied specimens, the highest PFOS concentrations were found in

Pinnipeds and avian influenza: a global timeline and review of research on the impact of highly pathogenic avian influenza on pinniped populations with particular reference to the endangered Caspian seal (Pusa caspica).

This study reviews chronologically the international scientific and health management literature and resources relating to impacts of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) viruses on pinnipeds in order to reinforce strategies for the conservation of the endangered Caspian seal (Pusa caspica), currently under threat from the HPAI H5N1 subtype transmitted from infected avifauna which share its haul-out habitats. Many cases of mass pinniped deaths globally have occurred from HPAI spill-overs, and are attributed to infected sympatric aquatic avifauna. As the seasonal migrations of Caspian seals
