Beneficial bacteria improve the growth of Mimosa flocculosa Burkart seedlings under reduced fertilizer application.

Inoculation with plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) represents a promising strategy to enhance the effectiveness of ecological restoration efforts. Native Paraburkholderia nodosa strains and a commercial inoculant with Azospirillum brasilense were applied to Mimosa flocculosa Burkart seedlings under different doses of controlled-release fertilizer (CRF). Inoculated seedlings exhibited greater height at the 0 kg m-³ and 1 kg m-³ doses. Regarding the CRF, higher values for chlorophyll b were observed at the 2 kg m-³ dose. The use of PGPB to promote M. flocculosa growth under reduced fertiliz

Ethylene-jasmonate interplay involving ERF regulons modulates acute heat stress response in rice seedlings.

Rice (Oryza sativa), a staple cereal crop, is significantly threatened by rising temperatures, which impact all stages of growth, including the crucial early seedling establishment phase. Despite being critical in determining overall growth and productivity, response to acute (short-term intense) heat stress during the early seedling stage remains understudied. Here, by using gradients of heat stress duration and intensity, we identified a critical threshold, beyond which acute heat stress significantly impedes seedling growth. Transcriptome analysis of seedlings exposed to growth-inhibiting t

Light-emitting diode illumination optimizes bioactive phytochemicals and sensory qualities in highland barley seedlings.

BACKGROUND: Highland barley seedlings are rich in bioactive phytochemicals and are suitable for the development of functional beverages. Environmental conditions during seedling cultivation are critical, with light quality being an important factor regulating plant secondary metabolism, nutritional composition, and sensory quality. However, the effects of light-emitting diode (LED) light quality on the phytochemical profile, antioxidant capacity, and sensory properties of highland barley seedlings remain insufficiently understood. This study investigated effects of four light conditions - whit

Red light regulation on growth, root-leaf architecture and photosynthetic performance of rice seedlings.

Given that the problem of insufficient light intensity is prevalent in the cultivation of rice seedlings under facility conditions, and light quality plays a crucial role in regulating crop growth, it is necessary to explore the most suitable proportion of red light for improving the quality and photosynthetic capacity of the seedlings. In this study, two different types of rice varieties (conventional rice, Xiangzaoxian 24, XZX24 and hybrid rice, Huazheyou 261, HZY261) were selected as experimental materials. A systematic investigation was conducted to examine the effects of different red lig

Multiple omics analysis reveals the response mechanism of tobacco seedlings to different magnesium concentrations.

BACKGROUND: Magnesium is an essential macronutrient for tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) growth, as it participates in chlorophyll synthesis, photosynthesis, and enzyme activation. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying tobacco’s dynamic response to varying magnesium concentrations remain unclear. This study combined physiological, transcriptomic, and metabolomic analyses to explore the adaptive strategies of tobacco seedlings under complete magnesium deficiency (CK), deficient, optimal (T3, 4 mmol/L), excess, and toxic magnesium conditions. RESULTS: Magnesium deficiency/excess induced oxi

Potential of Plant-Based Extracts to Alleviate Sorbitol-Induced Osmotic Stress in Cabbage Seedlings.

In light of expected climate change, it is important to seek nature-based solutions that can contribute to the protection of our planet as well as to help overcome the emerging adverse changes. In an agricultural context, increasing plant resistance to abiotic stress seems to be crucial. Therefore, the scope of the presented research was focused on the application of botanical extracts that exerted positive effects on model plants growing under controlled laboratory conditions, as well as plants subjected to sorbitol-induced osmotic stress. Foliar spraying increased the length and fresh mass o

Ammonium regulates redox homeostasis and photosynthetic ability to mitigate copper toxicity in wheat seedlings.

As an essential plant micronutrient, copper (Cu) is required as a component of several enzymes, but it can be highly toxic to plants when present in excess quantities. Nitrogen (N) application can help to alleviate the phytotoxic effects of heavy metals, including Cu, and different N forms significantly affect the uptake and accumulation of heavy metals in plants. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of different N forms, i.e., ammonium (NH4+) and nitrate (NO3-), on Cu detoxification in wheat seedlings. The inhibition of seedling growth under excess Cu was more obvious in wheat p

Microarray-based expression analysis of phytohormone-related genes in rice seedlings during cyanide metabolism.

Plants exhibit highly coordinated, dynamic reactions to various abiotic stressors. As cyanide is a non-essential element for plant growth, entry inside plants can exert toxicity at multiple levels. In plant, hormone plays a pivot role under stress conditions. The fluctuations of stress-responsive hormones help in altering cellular dynamics and hence play a central role in coordination and adaptation growth responses under stress. This study focusses on uptake of cyanide in Oryza sativa seedlings and its effect on physiological and on genetic level. Microarray approach has been focused on trans

Hydrogen peroxide is involved in hydrogen sulfide-induced lateral root formation in tomato seedlings.

BACKGROUND: Both hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) are separately regarded as a highly reactive molecule involved in root morphogenesis. In this report, corresponding causal link governing lateral root formation was investigated. METHODS: By using pharmacological, anatomic, and molecular approaches, evidence presented here revealed the molecular mechanism underlying tomato lateral root development triggered by H2S. RESULTS: A H2S donor sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) triggered the accumulation of H2O2, the up-regulation of RBOH1 transcript, and thereafter tomato lateral root for

Attenuation of Sulfur Dioxide Damage to Wheat Seedlings by Co-exposure to Nitric Oxide.

The protective function of nitric oxide (NO) has been extensively clarified in plant responses to abiotic stresses. However, little is known about the regulation of NO in plants exposed to sulfur dioxide (SO2). In the present study, we found that co-exposure to NO significantly attenuated SO2-induced wheat seedling growth inhibition. Data showed that NO efficiently prevented SO2-triggered oxidative stress, as indicated by decreasing reactive oxygen species production, lipid peroxidation, and electrolyte leakage. This might be attributed to the regulatory role of NO in antioxidative defense, su

Cadmium and lead interactive effects on oxidative stress and antioxidative responses in rice seedlings.

Interactive effects of two heavy metal pollutants Cd and Pb in the growth medium were examined on their uptake, production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), induction of oxidative stress and antioxidative defence responses in Indica rice (Oryza sativa L.) seedlings. When rice seedlings in sand culture were exposed to 150 μM Cd (NO3)2 or 600 μM Pb (CH3COO)2 individually or in combination for 8-16 days, a significant reduction in root/shoot length, fresh weight, relative water content, photosynthetic pigments and increased production of ROS (O2˙- and H2O2) was observed. Both Cd and Pb were readi

Comparison of global responses to mild deficiency and excess copper levels in Arabidopsis seedlings.

Copper is an essential micronutrient in higher plants, but it is toxic in excess. The fine adjustments required to fit copper nutritional demands for optimal growth are illustrated by the diverse, severe symptoms resulting from copper deficiency and excess. Here, a differential transcriptomic analysis was done between Arabidopsis thaliana plants suffering from mild copper deficiency and those with a slight copper excess. The effects on the genes encoding cuproproteins or copper homeostasis factors were included in a CuAt database, which was organised to collect additional information and conne

Photosynthetic responses of Monarch birch seedlings to differing timings of free air ozone fumigation.

To study the effects of different periods of ozone (O3) fumigation on photosynthesis in leaves of the Monarch birch (Betula maximowicziana), we undertook free air O3 fumigation to Monarch birch seedlings at a concentration of 60 nmol mol(-1) during daytime. Plants were exposed to O3 at early, late or both periods in the growing season. The light-saturated net photosynthetic rate (A(sat)) in July and August was reduced by O3 exposure through a reduction in the maximum rate of carboxylation (V(c,max)). In early September, on the other hand, despite a reduction in V(c,max), A(sat) was not reduced

The effects of iron deficiency on lead accumulation in Ailanthus altissima (Mill.) Swingle seedlings.

Understanding the effects of root Fe deficiency on the uptake and translocation of toxic metals can be important for improving the phytoremediation strategies of polluted soils. The present study investigated how Fe nutritional status affects the uptake and root-to-shoot-translocation of Pb in hydroponically grown seedlings of (Mill.) Swingle. The interactions of Fe deficiency and Pb were assessed by measuring the root Fe(III) reductase activity, carboxylic acids concentration in root exudates, root and shoot biomass, and accumulation of Pb and other metals (Fe, Zn, Mn, and Cu) in roots and le

Effects of light on cyanide-resistant respiration and alternative oxidase function in Arabidopsis seedlings.

Mitochondrial alternative oxidase (AOX), the unique respiratory terminal oxidase in plants, catalyzes the energy wasteful cyanide (CN)-resistant respiration and plays a role in optimizing photosynthesis. Although it has been demonstrated that leaf AOX is upregulated after illumination, the in vivo mechanism of AOX upregulation by light and its physiological significance are still unknown. In this report, red light and blue light-induced AOX (especially AOX1a) expressions were characterized. Phytochromes, phototropins and cryptochromes, all these photoreceptors mediate the light-response of AOX

Specificity of phenolic glycoside induction in willow seedlings (Salix sericea) in response to herbivory.

Salix sericea (Marsh.) (Salicaceae) seedlings were used to investigate phytochemical induction of phenolic glycosides following beetle herbivory. Seven-week-old full-sibling seedlings were subjected to one of three damage treatments: Plagiodera versicolora adults, P. versicolora larvae, or Calligrapha multipunctata bigsbyana adults. Salicylate concentrations were measured locally (within damaged leaves) and systemically (above and below damaged leaves) 4 d later. Herbivory caused differential salicylate induction; 2'-cinnamoylsalicortin was induced, whereas salicortin was not. The induction of

Regulation of rhizosphere acidification by photosynthetic activity in cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. walp.) seedlings.

In contrast to cereals or other crops, legumes are known to acidify the rhizosphere even when supplied with nitrates. This phenomenon has been attributed to N2 fixation allowing excess uptake of cations over anions; however, as we have found previously, the exposure of the shoot to illumination can cause rhizosphere acidification in the absence of N2 fixation in cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp). In this study, we examined whether the light-induced acidification can relate to photosynthetic activity and corresponding alterations in cation-anion uptake ratios. The changes of rhizosphere pH alo

Protective role of lycopene against salinity-induced oxidative stress in Medicago sativa L. seedlings.

Soil salinization is one of the major challenges to agriculture, reducing productivity and directly affecting plant growth, germination, and physiology, especially in economically important crops such as Medicago sativa. Conventional soil management methods are not always sufficient to mitigate the adverse effects of salinity, highlighting the need for alternative and sustainable strategies. This study evaluated the phytoprotective potential of lycopene (LCP) against NaCl-induced stress in M. sativa. Seeds were treated with 256 µg/mL and 512 µg/mL of LCP combined with 50 mM NaCl and compared t
