Selective Outcome Reporting Bias in Randomized Controlled Trials on Dental Caries in Children and Adolescents: A Meta-Research Study.

INTRODUCTION: Selective outcome reporting (SOR) is a bias that can occur in randomized controlled trials (RCTs), defined as the alteration or omission of primary outcome in the publication compared to the original protocol. Researchers may modify outcomes to highlight statistically significant results. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of SOR in RCTs related to dental caries in children and adolescents. METHODS: We conducted a search on <ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="http://ClinicalTrials.gov" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">ClinicalTrials.gov</ext-link> and the

Examining the relationship between selective attentional bias for food- and body-related stimuli and purging behaviour in bulimia nervosa.

Previous research exploring cognitive biases in bulimia nervosa suggests that attentional biases occur for both food-related and body-related cues. Individuals with bulimia were compared to non-bulimic controls on an emotional-Stroop task which contained both food-related and body-related cues. Results indicated that bulimics (but not controls) demonstrated a cognitive bias for both food-related and body-related cues. However, a discrepancy between the two cue-types was observed with body-related cognitive biases showing the most robust effects and food-related cognitive biases being the most

Selective processing of smoking-related cues in smokers: manipulation of deprivation level and comparison of three measures of processing bias.

Recent theories of addiction suggest that an attentional bias for drug-related cues plays an important role in maintaining drug-taking behaviours. A key feature of the present study is that it used three different measures of processing bias for linguistic and pictorial smoking-related cues: masked and unmasked conditions of the modified Stroop task, and a pictorial version of the visual probe task. Participants were smokers (n = 27), who were tested twice, with deprivation level manipulated as a within-subjects variable. They were asked to abstain from smoking for 12 h before one session, and

Does financing constraints impact the Chinese companies' pollutants emissions? Evidence from a sample selection bias corrected model based on Chinese company-level panel data.

Most Chinese companies face financing constraints and thus lack sufficient funding for operations and investments that would better control their pollutant emissions. A sample selection bias corrected model is constructed to study the impact of financing constraints on the Chinese companies' pollutant emissions using company-level emissions data. The empirical results revealed that financing constraints increase the pollutant emissions of the Chinese companies, including the emissions of industrial wastewater, industrial solid waste, and sulfur dioxide. The heterogeneity analysis showed that t

Nodules in autoimmune thyroiditis are associated with increased risk of thyroid cancer in surgical series but not in cytological series: evidence for selection bias.

BACKGROUND: The association of thyroid cancer and autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT) has been widely addressed, with conflicting results in surgical and cytological series, likely affected by selection bias. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to evaluate the association between the cytological features suggestive or indicative of malignancy and AIT in 2504 consecutive patients (2029 females and 475 males, mean age 58.3 ± 14.1 y) undergoing fine-needle aspiration cytology for thyroid nodules. PATIENTS: Based on the clinical diagnosis, patients were divided into four groups: AIT with nodules

Selective attention in adults with major depressive disorder: A systematic review and meta-analysis of task-specific differences and negative bias.

Several studies report that adults with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) present with a negative attentional bias compared to individuals without a history of MDD. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to: evaluate the hypothesis that selective attention differs in adults with MDD; determine whether this difference consists of a negative attentional bias (e.g., paying more attention to negative stimuli); and assess whether it is more severe with more severe MDD. Following PRISMA guidelines, we conducted a literature search of MEDLINE, PsycINFO, and EMBASE from inception through Apr

An investigation of discrepancies in outcome reporting and selective reporting bias in interrupted time series studies of health interventions: a methodological study.

BACKGROUND: Selective reporting bias occurs when authors report outcomes or results based on the P value, magnitude or direction of the results. Selective reporting has not been examined in interrupted time series (ITS) studies. Therefore, we investigated (1) discrepancies between outcomes specified in protocols and those reported in the corresponding results reports, (2) completeness of results reporting, and (3) whether there was evidence of selective reporting bias in ITS studies. METHODS: We systematically searched for published peer-reviewed protocols of ITS studies of health interventio

Machine Learning-Guided Discovery of Bacterial-Selective Membrane-Active Compounds Reveals Mechanistic Bias in Antibiotic Training Datasets.

The rise of antibiotic resistance necessitates the discovery of antibacterial compounds with novel mechanisms of action (MoAs). Recent machine learning approaches have shown promise in antibacterial compound discovery, but often identify derivatives of known antibiotic classes rather than mechanistically novel compounds. Previous approaches applied Tanimoto similarity filters at the end of screening pipelines, but this method has substantial drawbacks: Tanimoto similarity can be misleading in chemical space, and post-hoc filtering does not influence what activity models learn to prioritize. Periodontal destruction indicators across different disease durations in older patients with type 2 diabetes: a cross-sectional study of nonlinear distribution patterns and selection bias.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: To investigate the distribution of periodontal destruction indicators across different disease duration stages in older patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and to evaluate the nonlinear association between disease duration and periodontitis severity while addressing selection bias inherent in the cross-sectional design. METHODS: A total of 70 T2DM patients aged 60-85 years were enrolled and divided into five groups according to disease duration: ≤5, 6-10, 11-15, 16-20, and >20 years. 100 age-matched non-diabetic individuals served as the reference group. Evaluating the effect of hospital and insurance type on the risk of 1-year mortality of very low birth weight infants: controlling for selection bias.

OBJECTIVES: We examined the effect of hospital type and medical coverage on the risk of 1-year mortality of very low birth weight (VLBW) infants while adjusting for possible selection bias. METHODS: The study population was limited to singleton live birth infants having birth weight between 500 and 1500 g with no congenital anomalies who were born in Arkansas hospitals between 2001 and 2007. Propensity score (PS) matching and PS covariate adjustment were used to mitigate selection bias. In addition, a conventional multivariable logistic regression model was used for comparison purposes. Dopamine receptor blockade attenuates the general incentive motivational effects of noncontingently delivered rewards and reward-paired cues without affecting their ability to bias action selection.

Environmental cues affect our behavior in a variety of ways. Despite playing an invaluable role in guiding our daily activities, such cues also appear to trigger the harmful, compulsive behaviors that characterize addiction and other disorders of behavioral control. In instrumental conditioning, rewards and reward-paired cues bias action selection and invigorate reward-seeking behaviors, and appear to do so through distinct neurobehavioral processes. Although reward-paired cues are known to invigorate performance through a dopamine-dependent incentive motivational process, it is not known if d

Perceived influence of media campaigns and immunization awareness in rural Muzaffarabad, Azad Jammu and Kashmir: A cross-sectional evaluation of selection Bias in digital survey methodology.

Despite ongoing Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) activities, immunization coverage (IC) in rural areas of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) remains below the herd-immunity threshold of 95%. This study assessed the perceived influence of media campaigns on immunization awareness among rural caregivers in Muzaffarabad and examined methodological implications of WhatsApp-based data collection in a partially connected population. A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 300 parents/caregivers of children under five, using a WHO 30 × 10 cluster design across 30 rural Union Councils. Household

The effect of selection bias on the performance of a deep learning-based intraoperative hypotension prediction model using real-world samples from a publicly available database.

BACKGROUND: There are models to predict intraoperative hypotension from arterial pressure waveforms. Selection bias in datasets used for model development and validation could impact model performance. We aimed to evaluate how selection bias affects the predictive performance of a deep learning (DL)-based model and a model using only mean arterial pressure (MAP) as input (MAP-only model). METHODS: We used the VitalDB open dataset. A hypotensive event was defined as a MAP <65 mm Hg for 1 min. For the 'biased dataset', 'non-hypotensive events' needed to be (a) at the centre of a 'non-hypotensiv

Selection bias in follow-up studies of stem cell transplantation survivors: an experience within the Maastricht Observational study of late effects after Stem cell trAnsplantation (MOSA).

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is an important treatment for many malignant hematological and non-hematological diseases. Survivors of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HCT) are at risk of long-term health problems and reduced quality of life related to previous treatments. Many studies about these long-term effects have been conducted over the last decades. However, selection bias is a concern in long-term follow-up studies and little is known about the non-participating group. As part of the Maastricht Observational study of late effects after Stem cell trAnsplantation (MOSA)

CD45.1/CD45.2 Congenic Markers Induce a Selective Bias for CD8+ T Cells during Adoptive Lymphocyte Reconstitution in Lymphocytopenia Mice.

CD45.1/CD45.2 congenic markers have been used to track hematopoietic lineage differentiation following hematopoietic stem and progenitor cell (HSPC) transplantation. However, several studies suggest that a bias exists in CD45.1 versus CD45.2 hematopoietic cell reconstitution from HSPCs. Meanwhile, no definitive comparison has been reported for mature immune cells as to whether the CD45.1/CD45.2 disparity can skew the immune cell response. In this study, using lymphocytopenia Rag1-/- CD45.2 mice as hosts, we assessed the reconstitution potential of CD45.1 versus CD45.2 lymphocytes following ado

Encoding of Global Visual Motion in the Avian Pretectum Shifts from a Bias for Temporal-to-Nasal Selectivity to Omnidirectional Excitation across Speeds.

The pretectum of vertebrates contains neurons responsive to global visual motion. These signals are sent to the cerebellum, forming a subcortical pathway for processing optic flow. Global motion neurons exhibit selectivity for both direction and speed, but this is usually assessed by first determining direction preference at intermediate velocity (16-32°/s) and then assessing speed tuning at the preferred direction. A consequence of this approach is that it is unknown if and how direction preference changes with speed. We measured directional selectivity in 114 pretectal neurons from 44 zebra

Bias in the Listeria monocytogenes enrichment procedure: lineage 2 strains outcompete lineage 1 strains in University of Vermont selective enrichments.

Listeria monocytogenes can be isolated from a range of food products and may cause food-borne outbreaks or sporadic cases of listeriosis. L. monocytogenes is divided into three genetic lineages and 13 serotypes. Strains of three serotypes (1/2a, 1/2b, and 4b) are associated with most human cases of listeriosis. Of these, strains of serotypes 1/2b and 4b belong to lineage 1, whereas strains of serotype 1/2a and many other strains isolated from foods belong to lineage 2. L. monocytogenes is isolated from foods by selective enrichment procedures and from patients by nonselective methods. The aim

Natural Selection Drives Codon Usage Bias in the Mitochondrial Genome of Ligula intestinalis (Linnaeus, 1758) Gmelin, 1790 (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidea): Insights from Comparative Genomics and Optimal Codon Identification.

Codon usage bias (CUB) is a useful indicator of evolutionary forces shaping mitochondrial genomes. Codon usage bias in mitochondrial genomes of Diphyllobothriidae and especially in Ligula intestinalis was characterized. The roles of natural selection and mutation pressure in framing this bias were evaluated on the basis of 12 protein-coding genes in Diphyllobothriidae. The complete mitogenome (13,725 bp) of L. intestinalis comprises 12 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 tRNAs, and two rRNAs, all positioned on the heavy strand, and contains an overall AT content of 66.15%. The mean CAI (0.176), CB
