Longitudinal relationships among parental-adolescent attachment, peer attachment, self-concept clarity, and hope in adolescents.

Despite growing concerns regarding the development of hope among adolescents, the longitudinal relationship between parental-adolescent attachment, peer attachment, self-concept clarity, and hope remains far from being fully understood. This three-wave longitudinal study (6 months apart) across 1 year examined the relationship between attachment with parents and peers, self-concept clarity, and hope in 1,312 adolescents (age range 12-18, Mage = 14.29, SD = 1.38; 50.2% males) by using cross-lagged panel models. The results revealed a bidirectional relationship between hope and parental attachme

Who Am I? Self-concept in Adults with Cystic Fibrosis: Association with Anxiety and Depression.

Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a progressive condition resulting in reduced lung function and strongly associated with elevated anxiety and depression symptoms. Self-concept refers to an individual's overarching sense of identity, a positive level of which is widely associated with reduced anxiety and depression. There is a significant lack of self-concept research within CF. This study explores the association between self-concept and anxiety and depression in adults with CF. 64 adults living with CF in Western Australia completed validated online questionnaires (Generalised Anxiety Disorder-7, Pati

Self-Healing: A Concept for Musculoskeletal Body Pain Management - Scientific Evidence and Mode of Action.

Traditionally, musculoskeletal pain management has focused on the use of conventional treatments to relieve pain. However, multi-modal integrative medicine including alternative/complementary treatments is becoming more widely used and integrated into treatment guidelines around the world. The uptake of this approach varies according to country, with generally a higher uptake in developed countries and in females aged more than 40 years. Integral to the concept described here, is that the body has an innate ability to self-heal, which can be optimized by the use of integrative medical strategi

Sexual self-concept among men and women child sexual abuse survivors: Emergence of differentiated profiles.

BACKGROUND: Child sexual abuse (CSA) can impact survivor's sexuality, notably regarding sexual self-concept, a key component of sexual well-being. Yet, sexual self-concept has been understudied among CSA survivors and gender differences have been sparsely investigated. OBJECTIVE: The current study aimed to identify CSA survivors' distinct profiles according to their sexual self-concept, and compare these profiles based on factors such as CSA characteristics, gender, current age, sexual functioning and adult sexual assault (ASA). PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: A total of 176 CSA survivors (60 % wo

Strength training can have unexpected effects on the self-concept of children with cerebral palsy.

PURPOSE: This study was designed to evaluate the effect of a home-based progressive resistance strength-training program on the self-concept of children with cerebral palsy. METHODS: A randomized, controlled trial was used to evaluate the effects of a six-week strength-training program on self-concept immediately after completion of the program (week six) and at a follow-up session held 18 weeks after the initial assessment. Seventeen children [eight boys, nine girls; mean age 12.1 years (SD 2.5)] with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy were recruited. Participants in the experimental group comp

Compliance with treatment for postpolio sequelae: effect of type A behavior, self-concept, and loneliness.

To examine the effect of Type A behavior, self-concept, and loneliness on completion of and compliance with a postpolio sequelae treatment program, all 204 individuals who had been evaluated by the Postpolio Service were mailed the Postpolio Fatigue Questionnaire, the revised UCLA Loneliness Scale, and the Tennessee Self-Concept Scale. Patients were also asked to rate the frequency of assistive device use, their engaging in self-care activities, and requesting physical assistance from others; they had previously been administered the brief Type A Scale. Of the 46 respondents, 63% had completed

Functional somatic complaints in adolescents: relationship to negative life events, self-concept, and family characteristics.

While recurrent somatic complaints are commonly encountered in children and adolescents, occult organic disease is rarely found in patients with these complaints. Recent studies have confirmed the clinical impression that a relationship exists between functional somatic complaints and negative life events in adolescents. Our goal was to investigate additional psychosocial characteristics that may be associated with functional complaints. One hundred fifteen adolescents coming for the first time to an adolescent medicine clinic completed standard measures of negative life events, psychophysiolo

Multidimensional profiles of head start preschoolers' moral self-concept predict subsequent, but not concurrent, aggression.

The moral self-concept (MSC) describes how children view themselves as moral agents. Research suggests that the MSC may relate to moral behavior, yet little is known about how MSC relates to moral behavior in preschoolers. One hundred six low-income children (M age = 52.78 months, SD = 6.61 months) and their teachers participated in this study. In the fall, children completed a MSC puppet task measure. In the fall and spring, teachers reported via children's survey prosocial behavior and aggressive behavior. We used a person-centered approach to identify profiles of MSC, which revealed two pro

The Interplay Between Childhood Sexual Abuse, Self-Concept Clarity, and Dissociation: A Resilience-Based Perspective.

BACKGROUND: Despite a robust consensus regarding the potentially negative implications of childhood sexual abuse (CSA), research investigating risk and protective factors-particularly among well-functioning young adults-is scant. Dissociation is one of the major maladaptive outcomes of CSA. Nevertheless, CSA explains only about 10% of the variance of dissociation. Possibly, this modest effect size is due to protective factors moderating the relation between CSA and dissociative symptoms. One such factor may be the extent to which one has succeeded in developing a clear and coherent sense of wh

A proof of concept application of aptachain: ligand-induced self-assembly of a DNA aptamer.

A challenge for the use of aptamers as biosensors is how to signal the occurrence of their ligand binding event into a signal that can be exploited in a detection scheme. Here, we present the concept of "aptachain" formation, where an aptamer is split into two overlapping or staggered strands and assembles into an extended oligomer upon ligand binding. This assembly of aptamers can then be used as a way to detect ligand binding by the aptamer. As an example of this concept, we employed the cocaine-binding aptamer as a model system, used its ability to tightly bind quinine and demonstrated its

A novel cuffless device for self-measurement of blood pressure: concept, performance and clinical validation.

A pocket-size cuffless electronic device for self-measurement of blood pressure (BP) has been developed (Freescan, Maisense Inc., Zhubei, Taiwan). The device estimates BP within 10 s using three embedded electrodes and one force sensor that is applied over the radial pulse to evaluate the pulse wave. Before use, basic anthropometric characteristics are recorded on the device, and individualized initial calibration is required based on a standard BP measurement performed using an upper-arm BP monitor. The device performance in providing valid BP readings was evaluated in 313 normotensive and hy

Disgust and implicit self-concept in women with borderline personality disorder and posttraumatic stress disorder.

Disgust may be a key emotion and target for psychotherapeutic interventions in borderline personality disorder (BPD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) at explicit and implicit-automatic levels. However, automatically activated disgust reactions in individuals with these disorders have not been studied. Disgust and its correlation with childhood abuse were assessed in women with BPD, but without PTSD; women with PTSD, but without BPD; women with BPD and PTSD; and healthy women. Disgust sensitivity, anxiety and depression were measured by self-report. Implicit disgust-prone (relative to a

The relationship between parenting styles and young adults' self-concepts and evaluations of parents.

In the present study, 123 college students were surveyed in order to assess their self-concepts, evaluations of parents, and perceptions of their parents' parenting styles. Notably, the students' self-concepts were found to vary directly with perceived level of parental warmth, but did not vary as a function of their parents' level of restrictiveness. Fathers and mothers were found to be rated more highly if they were perceived as being warm and permissive rather than hostile and restrictive. Finally, opposite-sex parents' level of warmth also correlated with how each parent was evaluated. Som

Effects of marital conflict and family structure on the self-concepts of pre- and early adolescents.

This study explored the effects of marital conflict and family structure on the self-concepts of youth aged 8-12. Subjects were 16 mother-youth pairs from intact parent families (IP) and 17 mother-youth pairs from separated parent families (SP). Results revealed youth in families with low marital hostility and high marital affection had significantly more positive self-concepts. Analyses suggested differences between IP and SP groups may best be explained by differences in marital hostility. The authors discuss the effects of marital discord on parenting within an ecosystems perspective.

The effects of selective surgery on the self-concept and attainments of children with spina bifida and hydrocephalus.

Self-Concept and attainment were examined in spina bifida children born before and after the introduction of selective surgery. It was expected that children born since the introduction of selection would be better adjusted and have a higher level of attainment. The results confirm that there are substantial differences between the two groups, with subjects born since the introduction of selective surgery functioning at a higher level.

The possessive self as a barrier to conflict resolution: effects of mere ownership, process accountability, and self-concept clarity on competitive cognitions and behavior.

The authors propose that people have difficulty managing conflict because they quickly develop ownership of arguments and positions they use in the dispute, that these arguments and positions become part of their (extended) self-concept, and that any opposition or counterargumentation therefore becomes an ego-threat. Four studies reveal that individuals value arguments and beliefs more when these are associated with the self and that anticipated or real opposition triggers ego-defensive cognition and behavior, including competitive communication, retaliatory responses, negative perceptions of

Reading- and Spelling-Related Self-Concept, Emotions and Coping Strategies in Students With and Without Dyslexia.

Dyslexia can negatively affect attitudes such as self-concept, emotions and coping. Prior research has mainly focused on global academic self-concept and negative emotions, with limited focus on specific reading- and spelling-related self-concept, positive emotions and coping strategies. We examined the reading- and spelling-related attitudes of primary school students with (n = 90) and without (n = 1411) formally diagnosed dyslexia. Students were randomly assigned to fill out the Reading Attitudes Scales (n = 753) or the Spelling Attitudes Scales (n = 748), with which reading-/spelling-relate

"Longing is good": proof-of-concept for a novel psychological intervention to tackle self-blaming emotions.

BACKGROUND: Many people with depression, for which self-blame plays a key role, are not amenable to current standard psychological treatments. This calls for novel self-guided interventions, which require less attention and motivation. The present study sought to establish proof-of-concept for a novel self-guided intervention in a non-clinical sample, which prompts people to transform self-blaming feelings into "longing," as a related unpleasant, but presumably more adaptive and approach-related emotion, which plays a key role in many musical and literary genres but has been largely overlooked
