Visually impaired people are often unaware of dangers in front of them, even in familiar environments. Furthermore, in unfamiliar environments, such people require guidance to reduce the risk of colliding with obstacles. This study proposes a simple smartphone-based guiding system for solving the navigation problems for visually impaired people and achieving obstacle avoidance to enable visually impaired people to travel smoothly from a beginning point to a destination with greater awareness of their surroundings. In this study, a computer image recognition system and smartphone application we

Recently, significant advances over the past decade have been made in robotics, artificial intelligence and other cognitive related fields, allowing development of highly sophisticated bio-mimetic robotics systems. In addition, enormous number of robots have been designed and assembled by explicitly realising their biological oriented behaviours. To enhance skill behaviours and adequate grasping abilities in these devices, a new phase of dexterous hands has been developed recently with bio-mimetically oriented and bio-inspired functionalities. The aim in writing this review paper is to present

A wide range of assistive and rehabilitative technologies (ART) are available to assist with mobility and upper limb function. However, anecdotal evidence suggests many of the devices prescribed, or purchased, are either poorly used, or rejected entirely. This situation is costly, both for the healthcare provider and the user, and may be leading to secondary consequences, such as falls and/or social isolation. This paper reports on the development and initial feasibility testing of a system for monitoring when and how assistive devices are used outside of the clinic setting, and feeding this i

These three single-case studies assessed the use of walker devices and microswitch technology for promoting ambulation behavior among persons with multiple disabilities. The walker devices were equipped with support and weight lifting features. The microswitch technology ensured that brief stimulation followed the participants' ambulation responses. The participants were two children (i.e., Study I and Study II) and one man (i.e., Study III) with poor ambulation performance. The ambulation efforts of the child in Study I involved regular steps, while those of the child in Study II involved pus

Health-enabling technologies can contribute to a better living with diverse disease patterns, especially at home. Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) provides security and convenience at the main place of residence, but usually cannot be taken on the road. Mobile health-enabling technologies could overcome this barrier of immobility and enable its' users to take advantages of assistive technology with them. The presented literature review examines disease patterns, which can be addressed by mobile health-enabling technologies. Especially chronic diseases, like diabetes, are very responsive for conti

PURPOSE: Navigating urban environments poses significant challenges for individuals who are blind or have low vision, especially in areas affected by construction. Construction zones introduce hazards such as uneven surfaces, barriers, hazardous materials, excessive noise, and altered routes that obstruct familiar paths and compromise safety. Although navigation tools assist in trip planning, they often overlook these temporary obstacles. Existing hazard detection systems also struggle with the visual variability of construction sites.
METHODS: We developed a computer vision-based assistive s

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experiences of Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialists (COMS) integrating assistive technology (AT) and virtual reality (VR) into their practice. Drawing from broader research on AT adoption, these findings underscore the value of a phenomenological approach in understanding how specialists perceive, adapt to, and navigate the challenges of using AT and VR - ultimately contributing to more accessible and effective mobility instruction.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study employed Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) to

PURPOSE: Delivering on a global mission to increase access to assistive technology (AT) requires strategic vision, targeted programmes and a commitment to iterative learning. In 2023, ATscale, the Global Partnership for Assistive Technology, oversaw short-term programme investments to twelve low- and middle-income countries to strengthen developing assistive technology ecosystems through data collection, policy creation and capacity building. This paper aims to gather and critically appraise lessons learnt from these whole-of-country investments.
METHODS: Case study method entailed (i) a desk

In this paper, we imagine how future technologies could support people who have severe hearing and visual impairment or a deafblind condition. Much effort has gone into assistive technologies to improve access for people with visual or hearing impairments, and while some of these systems will work for people with dual sensory loss, this is not always the case. Fewer systems have been developed specifically for this group. To this end, we imagine what technologies might look like in the future if they were designed specifically for people with dual sensory impairment, based on the experiences o

The rising demand for assistive technology (AT) highlights the potential of 3D printing as an innovative occupational therapy (OT) tool. This cost-effective technology enables the creation of customized AT devices that enhance client participation and well-being through remediation and adaptive approaches. However, adoption in OT practice faces several barriers, including limited practitioner awareness, insufficient training, and time and maintenance challenges. This commentary proposes a tiered approach focused on expanding education and integrating 3D printing into OT training and practice s

The development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been widely applied as an assistive technology for individuals with visual impairment (VI), providing various assistive technologies such as object recognition and obstacle detection. The accurate and powerful systems can be triggered through voice commands and thus significantly enhance the life experiences of users with VI. However, most assistive technologies simply accept a clear and exact command as input, ignoring the cognition and memory problems in blind people. If the users forget some parts of the full command (e.g., name of a targe

BACKGROUND: Occupational therapists (OT) assess and prescribe assistive devices to older adults with limitations in performing daily living activities. Timely prescription of assistive devices to accommodate the rising demand has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Tele-assessment allows for continuity of care, but its success depends on therapists' acceptance.
OBJECTIVE: This study examined OTs' perceptions of the feasibility of conducting tele-assessment and developing a clinical practice guideline for remote prescription of assistive devices for older adults in Singapore.

Despite the daily need for people to travel on public transit buses using their wheeled mobility devices, relatively little information is available regarding the most efficacious, affordable, and independent approaches to assist passengers with keeping their mobility devices in the designated wheelchair access space. A systematic review was undertaken to summarize this literature, place it within a geographical and temporal context, appraise its quality, and establish common themes. Key academic and grey literature transportation databases and government websites searched from 1990 to May 202

Assistive robots are tools that people living with upper body disabilities can leverage to autonomously perform Activities of Daily Living (ADL). Unfortunately, conventional control methods still rely on low-dimensional, easy-to-implement interfaces such as joysticks that tend to be unintuitive and cumbersome to use. In contrast, vocal commands may represent a viable and intuitive alternative. This work represents an important step toward providing a viable vocal interface for people living with upper limb disabilities by proposing a novel lightweight vocal command recognition system. Visually impaired and blind people often face a range of socioeconomic problems that can make it difficult for them to live independently and participate fully in society. Advances in machine learning pave new venues to implement assistive devices for the visually impaired and blind. In this work, we combined image captioning and text-to-speech technologies to create an assistive device for the visually impaired and blind. Our system can provide the user with descriptive auditory feedback in the Kazakh language on a scene acquired in real-time by a head-mounted camera. The image captioning mod
