Semantic behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia and semantic dementia associated with TARDBP mutations.

Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is a highly heritable group of neurodegenerative disorders, characterized by varying clinical and pathological features. TARDBP gene has been described worldwide within the FTD/ALS spectrum but its association with right and left temporal variant of FTD (tvFTD) is still unclear. This study aimed to reclassify a Sardinian FTD cohort according to proposed criteria for the semantic behavioral variant FTD (sbvFTD), explore TARDBP mutations' association with tvFTD, and review related literature. From our FTD cohort of 94 patients, ten fulfilled the criteria for sbvFTD.

Mapping multidimensional content representations to neural and behavioral expressions of episodic memory.

Human neuroimaging studies have shown that the contents of episodic memories are represented in distributed patterns of neural activity. However, these studies have mostly been limited to decoding simple, unidimensional properties of stimuli. Semantic encoding models, in contrast, offer a means for characterizing the rich, multidimensional information that comprises episodic memories. Here, we extensively sampled four human fMRI subjects to build semantic encoding models and then applied these models to reconstruct content from natural scene images as they were viewed and recalled from memory.

The effect of word imagery on priming effect under a preconscious condition: an fMRI study.

Semantic priming is affected by the degree of association and how readily a word is imagined. In the association effect, activity in the perisylvian structures including the bilateral inferior frontal gyrus, the left middle temporal gyrus, and the supramarginal gyrus was correlated. However, little is known about the brain regions related to the effect of imagery word under the preconscious condition. Forty word pairs for high (HA)-, low (LA)-, and nonassociation (NA), nonword (NW) conditions were presented. Each 40 association word pairs (HA and LA) included 20 high (HI) and 20 low (LI) image

Perception, attention, and working memory are disproportionately impaired in dementia with Lewy bodies compared with Alzheimer's disease.

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypotheses that visuoperceptual and attentional ability are disproportionately impaired in patients having dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB) compared with Alzheimer's disease (AD). METHODS: A comprehensive battery of neuropsychological tasks designed to assess working, episodic, and semantic memory, and visuoperceptual and attentional functions was given to groups of patients with DLB (n=10) and AD (n=9), matched for age, education, and mini mental state examination (MMSE), and to normal controls (n=17). RESULTS: Both patient groups performed equally poorly on tests of e

Event congruency and episodic encoding: a developmental fMRI study.

A known contributor to adults' superior memory performance compared to children is their differential reliance on an existing knowledge base. Compared to those of adults, children's semantic networks are less accessible and less established, a difference that is also thought to contribute to children's relative resistance to semantically related false alarms. Using the "congruency effect" - the memory advantage of congruity, we manipulated the encoded stimuli in the present experiment such that the use of the knowledge base at encoding was more - or less - accessible in both children and adult

Personality disorder: the patients psychiatrists dislike.

A sample of psychiatrists was asked to read a case vignette and indicate likely management and attitudes to the patient on a number of semantic-differential scales. Patients given a previous diagnosis of personality disorder (PD) were seen as more difficult and less deserving of care compared with control subjects who were not. The PD cases were regarded as manipulative, attention-seeking, annoying, and in control of their suicidal urges and debts. PD therefore appears to be an enduring pejorative judgement rather than a clinical diagnosis. It is proposed that the concept be abandoned.

Attitude change during behavioural treatment of sexual inadequacy.

Attitudes towards 'self' and 'partner' were studied in couples undergoing three different behavioural treatments for sexual inadequacy: systematic desensitization with counselling; guided practice with counselling; and practice with minimal counselling. Factor analysis of semantic differential scales identified five components--general evaluation, anxiety, and three factors relevant to sexual evaluation designated as 'loving', 'sexually attractive' and 'easy to arouse'. Differences in derived factor scores were found which related to sex of rater, identity of complainant, and treatment receive

Differential linguistic features of verbal fluency in behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia and primary progressive aphasia.

Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is an early-onset neurodegenerative disorder with a heterogeneous clinical presentation. Verbal fluency is regularly used as a sensitive measure of language ability, semantic memory, and executive functioning, but qualitative changes in verbal fluency in FTD are currently overlooked. This retrospective study examined qualitative, linguistic features of verbal fluency in 137 patients with behavioral variant (bv)FTD (n = 50), or primary progressive aphasia (PPA) [25 non-fluent variant (nfvPPA), 27 semantic variant (svPPA), and 34 logopenic variant (lvPPA)] and 25 co

Sex-Specific Cognitive Divergence in Parkinson's Disease.

Background: Sex differences in cognitive impairment in Parkinson's disease (PD) have been reported, with several studies suggesting greater cognitive decline in males. However, evidence on long-term trajectories across specific cognitive domains is limited, as most prior work is cross-sectional. Aim: To investigate sex-specific longitudinal changes across multiple cognitive domains over 9 years in idiopathic PD, compared to age- and sex-matched controls. Methods: We analyzed data from the prospective ParkWest study, including n = 190 persons with PD (PwPs) and n = 202 controls. Regularly asses

Aging and brain activation with working memory tasks: an fMRI study of connectivity.

BACKGROUND: White matter changes in aging and neuropsychiatric disorders may produce disconnection of neural circuits. Temporal correlations in regional blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) signals may be used to assess effective functional connectivity in specific circuits, such as prefrontal cortex (PFC) circuits supporting working memory (WM) tasks. We hypothesized healthy older subjects would show lower connectivity than younger subjects. METHODS: Healthy younger (n = 9, 25.9 (SD 6.0) years) and older adults (n = 11, 68.3 (4.9) years) performed WM tasks during functional MRI. Subjects view

Vulnerability to proactive semantic interference and progression to dementia among older adults with mild cognitive impairment.

There is evidence that vulnerability to proactive semantic interference may be an early manifestation of early Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative disorders. At present, there is a paucity of data regarding the extent to which such deficits relate to the progression of cognitive deficits and to clinically significant endpoints such as dementia. In this study, we followed 76 older adults, initially diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment, for a period of up to 3 years. Twenty-seven of these individuals (35.5%) progressed from mild cognitive impairment to dementia. An examination of

Verbal fluency tests assess global cognitive status but have limited diagnostic differentiation: evidence from a large-scale examination of six neurodegenerative diseases.

Verbal fluency is widely used as a clinical test, but its utility in differentiating between neurodegenerative dementias and progressive aphasias, and from healthy controls, remains unclear. We assessed whether various measures of fluency performance could differentiate between Alzheimer's disease, behavioural variant of frontotemporal dementia, non-fluent and semantic variants of primary progressive aphasia, progressive supranuclear palsy, corticobasal syndrome and healthy controls. Category and letter fluency tasks were administered to 33 controls and 139 patients at their baseline clinical

A decade with anomic primary progressive aphasia.

Some patients with primary progressive aphasia (PPA) demonstrate only anomia. The lack of longitudinal observations of anomic PPA precluded us from determining whether progressive anomic aphasia was simply an early stage of semantic or logopenic variants, or a relatively independent variant. Herein, we report the 10-year clinical course of a patient with PPA who presented with pure anomic aphasia for 9 years. He is a right-handed man with anomia, who noticed word-finding difficulty at age 73. He was admitted to the hospital at age 77. On admission, the patient showed pure anomic aphasia with p

[Semantic dementia. A case report in the context of an independent medical examination].

Semantic dementia (SD) is a relatively rare primary degenerative brain disease, often with onset before the age of 65, which belongs to the group of frontotemporal lobar degenerations. The central characteristic of SD is a progressive loss of semantic knowledge with manifestation in aphasia as well as impaired face and object recognition. A reliable discrimination of SD from other neurodegenerative conditions, in particular from Alzheimer's disease, may be a challenge for neurologists as well as neuropsychologists. In the first place, a sound knowledge base is expected from the expert in order

DDAF-Net: Decoupled and Differentiated Attention Fusion Network for Object Detection.

The fusion of data from visible (RGB) and infrared (IR) sensors is essential for robust all-day and all-weather object detection. However, existing methods often suffer from modality redundancy and noise interference. To address these challenges, we propose the Decoupled and Differentiated Attention Fusion Network (DDAF-Net). Architecturally, DDAF-Net employs a decoupled backbone with a Siamese weight-sharing strategy to extract modality-common features, while parallel branches capture modality-specific features. To effectively integrate these features, we design the Differentiated Attention F

Heterogeneous graph transformer and diffusion model for disease diagnosis.

With the continuous development of Electronic Health Record (EHRs), medical heterogeneous data have become increasingly abundant, containing diverse types of entities and complex semantic relationships that provide essential support for disease diagnosis. However, conventional heterogeneous graph neural networks struggle to distinguish semantic differences among multi-type nodes and k-hop neighbors, often leading to semantic confusion and vulnerability to noise, which limits their classification performance and generalization capability. To tackle these challenges, we present a novel framework

Medial perirhinal cortex disambiguates confusable objects.

Our brain disambiguates the objects in our cluttered visual world seemingly effortlessly, enabling us to understand their significance and to act appropriately. The role of anteromedial temporal structures in this process, particularly the perirhinal cortex, is highly controversial. In some accounts, the perirhinal cortex is necessary for differentiating between perceptually and semantically confusable objects. Other models claim that the perirhinal cortex neither disambiguates perceptually confusable objects nor plays a unique role in semantic processing. One major hurdle to resolving this ce

SPIDER: Multi-Layer Semantic Token Pruning and Adaptive Sub-Layer Skipping in Multimodal Large Language Models.

Multimodal Large Language Models face significant efficiency challenges that stem from two distinct yet coupled sources: data redundancy and computational redundancy. While most methods focus on data redundancy by pruning visual tokens from the output of the visual encoder or computing redundancy in LLM decoders using blockwise importance, the finer-grained inter-layer representation shifts and the distribution differences within the layers themselves have not been fully explored. In this work, we comprehensively investigate this dual-level inefficiency. We posit that intermediate layer tokens

Cognitive differences in pictorial reasoning between high-functioning autism and Asperger's syndrome.

We investigated linguistic and visuospatial processing during pictorial reasoning in high-functioning autism (HFA), Asperger's syndrome (ASP), and age and IQ-matched typically developing participants (CTRL), using three conditions designed to differentially engage linguistic mediation or visuospatial processing (visuospatial, V; semantic, S; visuospatial + semantic, V + S). The three groups did not differ in accuracy, but showed different response time profiles. ASP and CTRL participants were fastest on V + S, amenable to both linguistic and nonlinguistic mediation, whereas HFA participants we

Adapting the Hopkins Verbal Learning Test-Revised with Semantic Cues: Assessing diagnostic utility in a Spanish clinical population.

Background: The Hopkins Verbal Learning Test-Revised (HVLT-R) is widely used for assessing episodic memory. In this study, we evaluated the HVLT-R with Semantic Cues (HVLT-R-SC), an adapted version incorporating semantic cues to improve diagnostic utility. The assessment was conducted in a Spanish cohort comprising cognitively unimpaired controls, individuals with multi-domain amnestic mild cognitive impairment (md-aMCI), and early Alzheimer's disease (AD). Methods: 684 participants (333 controls, 141 md-aMCI, and 210 early AD) completed the HVLT-R-SC. Effect sizes were calculated to quantify
