A Case Study on Vestibular Sensations in Driving Simulators.

Motion platforms have been used in simulators of all types for several decades. Since it is impossible to reproduce the accelerations of a vehicle without limitations through a physically limited system (platform), it is common to use washout filters and motion cueing algorithms (MCA) to select which accelerations are reproduced and which are not. Despite the time that has passed since their development, most of these algorithms still use the classical washout algorithm. In the use of these MCAs, there is always information that is lost and, if that information is important for the purpose of

Normative Value for the Laryngopharyngeal Measure of Perceived Sensation.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The Laryngopharyngeal Measure of Perceived Sensation (LUMP) is a recently validated patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) aimed at evaluating the symptom severity of patients with globus pharyngeus (GP). The objective of this study was to define the normative values for the LUMP questionnaire. STUDY DESIGN: Prospectively collected, descriptive research/scale development. METHODS: The LUMP questionnaire was completed by 88 subjects. Individuals without throat-related symptoms such as dysphagia, dysphonia, or cough were provided LUMP. The results of the eight-item ques

Neural correlates of evoked phantom limb sensations.

Previous work showed the existence of changes in the topographic organization within the somatosensory cortex (SI) in amputees with phantom limb pain, however, the link between nonpainful phantom sensations such as cramping or tingling or the percept of the limb and cortical changes is less clear. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in a highly selective group of limb amputees who experienced inducible and reproducible nonpainful phantom sensations. A standardized procedure was used to locate body sites eliciting phantom sensations in each amputee. Selected body sites that cou

The Emotional and Functional Impact of the Type of Tinnitus Sensation.

One to three percent of individuals with tinnitus experience significant reduction in quality of life. Factors that contribute to distress include personality variables, intolerance to loud noises, external locus of control, and pre-existing anxiety. Characteristics of tinnitus itself, such as perceived loudness, can also cause functional impairment. It is unknown whether different tinnitus sensations have various effects on either emotional or functional impairment, which can reduce quality of life. While audiological tests can determine pitch and loudness of tinnitus, questionnaires also can

Epiglottic cyst as an etiological factor of globus sensation.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Globus is a subjective complaint that describes a sensation of a lump or a foreign body in the throat. Despite being a well-known and common clinical condition, the etiological factors have not been definitely elucidated yet. The study was set up to ascertain the relationship between epiglottic cysts and globus sensation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All patients undergoing investigation and treatments for globus sensation were included in the study. Patients with epiglottic cysts but no other possible causes of globus sensation were constituted the series of patients. Patients wer

Topography of the sensations in primary restless legs syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the topography of restless legs syndrome (RLS) sensations and to compare subgroups of patients based on RLS topography. METHODS: Forty-four treated patients with primary RLS were interviewed and reported the localization of RLS sensations on body diagrams. RESULTS: RLS sensations were felt deep inside the muscles of mainly the middle portions of the lower limbs in 86% of patients. Superposition of patients' drawings showed a predominant involvement of the upper calves (75%). RLS sensations were diffuse, affecting on average 21% of the body. They occurred bilaterally,

Urethral Sensations are Related to the Development of Detrusor Overactivity.

Urgency is the core symptom of the overactive bladder symptom complex, but the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. Clinical findings have led to the assumption that bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) caused by benign prostatic enlargement (BPE) induces storage symptoms and detrusor overactivity. Presumably, BOO by BPE accounts for urgency; however, urgency is not always caused by BOO. Sensory nerves in the wall of the urethra fire in response to urethral fluid flow, and this activity initiates bladder contractions in the quiescent bladder and augments ongoing contractions in the acti

Sensation and distribution of stress and deformation in the human oesophagus.

Evaluation of the distribution of stresses and strains in relation to distension-induced sensation in the human oesophagus is valuable for understanding oesophageal biomechanics and mechano-sensation. In 12 healthy volunteers a specially designed oesophageal bag containing an endoscopic ultrasound probe was inflated to the moderate pain level. Ultrasound images, bag pressure and perceived sensation were recorded before and after pharmacological relaxation of the smooth muscle with butylscopolamine. The oesophagus was assumed to be circular and thick-walled. Distension induced a tensile circumf

Selective attention for hyperventilatory sensations in panic disorder.

According to cognitive theories, panic patients are assumed to display selective attention for feared bodily sensations. To date there has only been indirect evidence for this based on performance on reaction time tasks such as the modified Stroop task and the dot probe detection task. In the present study a more direct attempt was made to investigate whether panic patients show selective attention for feared sensations, in particular hyperventilatory sensations. A group of patients with panic disorder and a group of normal controls were compared on their performance on a reaction time task in

No superior perception of hyperventilatory sensations in panic disorder.

It has been argued that panic disorder patients may be more skilled at detecting changes in actual physiology than others. The present study investigated if panic patients are better than controls in perceiving sensations produced by light hyperventilation. Twelve panic patients and 28 control subjects underwent a procedure in which they were exposed 12 times to 1 min of light hyperventilation or 1 min of 'placebo' hyperventilation (isocapnia). Differences in sensations reported during real hyperventilation were compared to sensations reported during 'placebo' hyperventilation. Results demonst

Burning sensation in the throat--should it be named caloripharyngeus?

A burning sensation in the throat is often complained of by patients, but this symptom has been neglected in the literature. To emphasize its importance, should we give the name 'caloripharyngeus' to the symptom of burning in the throat? A preliminary study of 30 patients with the sensation of burning in the throat is presented in this study. Of the patients studied 73.33 per cent had hyperacidity detected for the first time. Reflux was presented in only one patient; four patients showed oesophagitis in the lower one-third of the oesophagus; 90 per cent of the patients responded to antacids. W

Panic attacks and interoceptive acuity for cardiac sensations.

It has been suggested that perception of visceral changes, and cognitive reactions to such changes, may be important for triggering panic attacks. It remains to be determined, however, whether people with panic attacks are actually characterized by enhanced perceptual acuity for interoceptive stimuli. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between panic attacks and awareness for cardiac sensations using an objective heartbeat discrimination procedure. Twenty panickers and 20 nonpanickers were given 60 trials of the Whitehead heartbeat discrimination procedure. Thirty trials

Waning of panic sensations during prolonged hyperventilation.

Recent theories about panic emphasize that a hyperventilatory positive feedback loop is involved in panic: catastrophic misinterpretation of bodily sensations may trigger anxiety, anxiety may stimulate hyperventilation, hyperventilation may promote the salience of feared sensations etc. Such models leave unexplained how and when panics come to an end. It was hypothesised that panic with hyperventilation may end because pronounced hyperventilation becomes, in the course of time, less powerful in generating perceivable bodily sensations. Twenty healthy subjects hyperventilated forcefully and exp

An "economic" theory of addiction, hypomania, and sensation seeking.

Research into the relationship between mania, sensation seeking, and substance abuse has shown that hypomanics and sensation seekers use substances frequently and often for the purpose of adjusting their moods. This essay develops an "economic" theory of addiction that attempts to account for those phenomena. The theory also supports the notion that sensation-seeking behavior and variants of manic behavior share many of the characteristics of the addictive behaviors. Implications for the treatment of addictive behaviors are discussed. Data from drug users in the military (Navy) are presented t

Sensation elicited by mechanical stimuli to the oropharyngeal mucosa.

An inaccurate localization of the site of stimulus, a higher two-point threshold for touch than those at lower lip or soft palate mucosae, and reference of touch sensation to the submaxillary cervical region following mechanical stimuli to the posterior oropharyngeal wall or lateral pharyngeal band were observed in the present study on otolaryngologists, medical students and patients with abnormal sensations in the throat. These results indicated that not only the somatic but also the visceral nervous system might contribute to the elicitation of sensation from the oropharyngeal structures beh

Effect of trigeminal tractotomy on dental sensation in humans.

Two patients with intractable pain of the head and neck due to cancer underwent trigeminal tractotomy and rhizotomy of the ninth and 10th cranial nerves, as well as an upper cervical dorsal rhizotomy. Postoperatively, cutaneous analgesia ws present ipsilaterally in peripheral portions of the face and the neck, but paramedian facial regions and the oral mucosa were hypalgesic. The procedures had no significant effect on dental pain perception in these patients, as tested electrically and thermally. These results are similar to those in recent reports of dental sensation after trigeminal tractot

Lepromatous Leprosy Presenting With Preserved Sensation: A Case Report.

Leprosy, which is also called Hansen's disease, is a chronic infectious disease that predominantly affects the skin and the nerves. It is caused by Mycobacterium leprae. The skin, peripheral nerves, upper respiratory tract mucous surface, and the eyes are mostly affected during the course of the disease. Leprosy can occur at any age, from early infancy to very old age. This case report describes a 43-year-old Nigerian man who works as a timber contractor. He presented with a month's history of the eruption of non-itchy papules first noticed on the face and progressively worsened till the patie

Plantar sensation associates with gait instability in older adults.

BACKGROUND: Advanced age brings a loss of plantar sensation, represented, for example, as higher sensation thresholds in standardized testing. This is thought to contribute to an increased risk of falls among older adults - an intuitive premise that has yet to be fully investigated, especially in the context of walking balance. The purpose of this study was to quantify the association between plantar sensation and the instability elicited by a suite of walking balance perturbations that differ in direction and context in a cohort of n = 28 older adults (73.0 ± 5.9 yrs). METHODS: We measured p

Multimodal Assessments of Altered Sensation after Transoral Endoscopic Thyroidectomy.

BACKGROUND: Transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy, a novel technique, uses oral vestibule as the entry point and leaves no scar on the body surface. However, because the incisions are close to the mental nerve, nerve damage and the associated sensory impairment are concerning. Herein, we evaluated sensory alteration after transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy and determined factors associated with the prolonged sensory alteration. METHODS: Patients who underwent transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy were enrolled. Sensation over the lower lip, chin, and neck was evaluated before and after the surgery.
