Enhancing the coherence between virtual and physical signals in virtual sensing with a double-layer microphone arrangement.

The coherence between virtual and physical signals is important in an active noise control system with virtual sensing techniques because it determines the upper limit of the noise reduction performance. In this paper, distributing physical microphones on two concentric hemispherical surfaces surrounding the virtual microphone is proposed to improve the coherence in practical applications. It is demonstrated that such a double-layer physical microphone arrangement outperforms the single-layer arrangement with the same number of physical microphones due to the added sound pressure gradient info

COVID-19-related anxiety and sense of coherence associated with psychological distress among rural residents in Japan during the pandemic late phase.

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has imposed significant psychological stress worldwide. Although many studies have examined the mental health impacts during the pandemic's early phase, evidence from the late phase remains limited. This study investigated the associations between COVID-19-related anxiety and sense of coherence (SOC) with psychological distress among rural residents during the pandemic late phase in Japan. METHODS: This community-based cross-sectional study was conducted from July 2022 to March 2023, the late phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. The part

Revealing intracochlear microtrauma during cochlear implantation using optical coherence tomography and electrochemical sensing.

Cochlear implants (CIs) are a highly effective treatment for severe to profound hearing loss, and earlier implantation is associated with improved auditory outcomes. As implantation is now extended to patients with residual hearing, preserving cochlear structures during surgery is a key priority. However, implant insertion trauma remains a risk and can compromise residual hearing. Currently, intraoperative methods capable of detecting such trauma in situ are lacking. We introduce a novel approach for in situ detection of intracochlear trauma using a gerbil model. Specifically, we use optical c

Sensing Inhalation Injury-Associated Changes in Airway Wall Compliance by Anatomic Optical Coherence Elastography.

Quantitative methods for assessing the severity of inhalation (burn) injury are needed to aid in treatment decisions. We hypothesize that it is possible to assess the severity of injuries on the basis of differences in the compliance of the airway wall. Here, we demonstrate the use of a custom-built, endoscopic, anatomic optical coherence elastography (aOCE) system to measure airway wall compliance. The method was first validated using airway phantoms, then performed on ex vivo porcine tracheas under varying degrees of inhalation (steam) injury. A negative correlation between aOCE-derived comp

Differences in resilience, hope, and sense of coherence among adolescents with ADHD/DCD, co-occurring ADHD and DCD, and typically developing adolescents.

PURPOSE: Adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and developmental coordination disorder (DCD) face daily challenges, which intensify when both disorders co-occur. Resilience, hope, and sense of coherence (SOC) support positive adaptation, yet research in this area is limited. This study examined resilience, hope, and SOC among adolescents with ADHD/DCD, co-occurring ADHD and DCD, and typical adolescents. METHODS: 105 adolescents (12-18 years) with ADHD/DCD (n = 37), co-occurring ADHD+DCD (n = 23), and typical adolescents (n = 45) underwent a comprehensive assessment

Non-Pharmacological Interventions Targeting Sense of Coherence Among Older Adults and Adults With Chronic Conditions: A Meta-Analysis With Trial Sequential Analysis.

BackgroundSense of coherence (SoC) is a core concept of 'salutogenesis' in positive psychology, correlated with emotional distress and disease development in adults with chronic disease and older adults. A diversity of non-pharmacological interventions (NPIs) has been developed to enhance SoC, but research findings are conflicting and the adequacy of sample sizes is uncertainty.ObjectiveThis paper aimed to explore appropriate interventions, evaluate the effectiveness of these SoC interventions and verify the statistical robustness and reliability of pooled results.MethodsSearch terms including

Does sense of coherence affect the relationship between self-rated health and health status in a sample of community-dwelling frail elderly people?

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to examine the association between self-rated health (SRH) and physical, functional, social and mental health measures in community dwelling elderly people needing nursing care. Of special interest was how coping resources (SOC) influenced this relationship. Self-rated health is a good predictor of future health status as measured by mortality and morbidity, decline of functional abilities, use of healthcare, and nursing home placement. The high mean age and the relatively high level of care-dependency in this sample, make this investigation importan

Association between sense of coherence and loss of independence or death in older adults: Locomotive Syndrome and Health Outcomes in Aizu Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Although sense of coherence (SOC) is a core concept to promote healthy aging, evidence of whether SOC improves loss of independence (LOI) or death is lacking. We aimed to investigate the association between SOC and LOI or death in older adults. METHODS: We enrolled independent older adults aged 65 years or over from a population-based cohort. SOC was assessed using a three-item SOC scale at baseline. The primary outcome was a composite of LOI (defined by Japanese long-term care insurance certification) or death. We investigated the association of SOC with LOI or death using the Co

Exposure to Parental Violence During Childhood and Later Psychological Distress Among Arab Adults in Israel: The Role of Gender and Sense of Coherence.

Exposure to parental violence in childhood is a significant predictor of psychological distress in adulthood. Factors at the individual level may explain the variance in psychological distress among adults exposed to parental violence. The current study examined the effect of exposure to different forms (i.e., physical violence and psychological aggression) and different patterns of parental violence (i.e., witnessing interparental violence, experiencing parental violence) on later psychological distress. The mediating role of sense of coherence (SOC) and the moderating role of gender in this

Decreasing sense of coherence and its determinants in spousal caregivers of persons with mild Alzheimer's disease in three year follow-up: ALSOVA study.

BACKGROUND: Sense of coherence (SOC) is associated with the capability to cope with caregiving. Our aims were (1) to describe the trajectory of SOC in aged spousal caregivers of persons with mild Alzheimer's disease (AD) in 3-year follow-up and (2) to identify baseline determinants influencing SOC change. METHODS: Both AD (n = 170) (CDR-SOB, MMSE, NPI, ADCS-ADL) and caregiver- (n = 170) (BDI, SOC) related efficacy parameters were evaluated annually. Follow-up time was 3 years. The relationship of potential baseline factors with longitudinal SOC was analyzed using linear mixed models. RESULTS

Effects of the Japanese Version of Metacognitive Training on Self-Efficacy and Sense of Coherence in Community-Dwelling Patients with Schizophrenia: A Pilot Study.

Improving self-efficacy, sense of coherence (SOC), and functional stability is essential for recovery and sustained community functioning among individuals with schizophrenia. However, the impact of the Japanese version of Metacognitive Training (MCT-J) on these factors has not been fully examined. This pilot study used a non-randomized Pre-Post design with sequential allocation (not a randomized controlled trial) and included 20 community-dwelling individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia, with 10 participants each assigned to the MCT-J intervention and delayed intervention control groups.
