Protein content of the Hylesia metabus egg nest setae (Cramer [1775]) (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae) and its association with the parental investment for the reproductive success and lepidopterism.

UNLABELLED: Hylesia metabus is a neotropical moth possessing toxic setae, which once in contact with the skin cause a severe dermatitis to humans known as lepidopterism. The only known function of the setae in the life cycle is to provide protection during the mating and egg-hatching stages. Approximately 65% of the protein content of the setae is a cluster of five proteases (28-45kDa) showing sequence homology to other S1A serine proteases. The N-glycans of a 40kDa protease are a mixture of neutral and sulfated G0F structures. The sulfated N-glycans have an important role in triggering the in

Behavioral responses of Ixodes scapularis tick to natural products: development of novel repellents.

The spread of blacklegged ticks (Ixodes scapularis) and growing threat of Lyme disease transmission has increased demand for effective, safe and environmentally friendly repellent products. Plant-derived essential oils are natural products that exhibit insecticidal and repellant activities and represent a promising alternative to synthetic repellants. However, mechanisms by which ticks detect odor stimuli and how such stimuli may function as repellents are not well understood. We examined the repellent activity of selected essential oil components towards I. scapularis in short- and long-term

Vacuolar-type proton pumps in insect epithelia.

Active transepithelial cation transport in insects was initially discovered in Malpighian tubules, and was subsequently also found in other epithelia such as salivary glands, labial glands, midgut and sensory sensilla. Today it appears to be established that the cation pump is a two-component system of a H(+)-transporting V-ATPase and a cation/nH(+) antiporter. After tracing the discovery of the V-ATPase as the energizer of K(+)/nH(+) antiport in the larval midgut of the tobacco hornworm Manduca sexta we show that research on the tobacco hornworm V-ATPase delivered important findings that emer

Ultrastructure of infective larvae (L3) of Onchocerca volvulus (Nematoda: Filarioidea) developed in Simulium yahense in Liberia.

Third-stage infective larvae of Onchocerca volvulus were examined to elucidate the ultrastructure and the interrelations of the stoma, esophagus, intestine, and nervous system. The alimentary canal involves a cuticularized stoma with a triradiate lumen that is continuous with a similar triradiate lumen in the muscular region of the esophagus. The lumen wall may be laterally appressed or opened into a stellate form in the glandular region. Posteriad from the esophagointestinal valve, the cylindroid lumen becomes partially occluded with microvilli formed by the evaginations of the apical membran

Gene editing reveals obligate and modulatory components of the CO2 receptor complex in the malaria vector mosquito, Anopheles coluzzii.

The sensitivity to volatile carbon dioxide (CO2) produced by humans and other animals is a critical component in the host preference behaviors of the malaria vector mosquito Anopheles coluzzii. The molecular receptors responsible for the ability to sense CO2 are encoded by three putative gustatory receptor (Gr) genes (Gr22,23,24) which are expressed in a distinctive array of sensory neurons housed in maxillary palp capitate peg sensilla of An. coluzzii. Despite the identification of these components and subsequent studies, there is a paucity of understanding regarding the respective roles of t

Description of new species of Phanodermopsis (Enoplida, Phanodermatidae) with key to genera of family Phanodermatidae and pictorial key to Phanodermopsis species.

A new representative of the family Phanodermatidae, Phanodermopsis nana sp. n., is described. The new species is found in the Sea of Japan and characterized by its small body size, long anterior sensilla and short tail. The new species differs from P. ingrami in body length (~ 7000 µm in P. ingrami vs ~ 3000 µm in P. nana sp. n.). The De Man's ratios (a, b, c) are smaller in P. nana sp. n. and the outer labial setae are longer (1 corresponding body diameter) than in P. ingrami (1/2 corresponding body diameter). The vulva is more posterior in P. ingrami (V% = 58-61%) than in P. nana sp. n. (V%

On the tympanic membrane impedance of the katydid Copiphora gorgonensis (Insecta: Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae).

Katydids (bush-crickets) are endowed with tympanal ears located in their forelegs' tibiae. The tympana are backed by an air-filled tube, the acoustic trachea, which transfers the sound stimulus from a spiracular opening on the thorax to the internal side of the tympanic membranes (TM). In katydids the sound stimulus reaches both the external and internal side of the membranes, and the tympanal vibrations are then transferred to the hearing organ crista acustica (CA) that contains the fluid-immersed mechanoreceptors. Hence the tympana are principally involved in transmitting and converting airb

[Survey on Schistosomes of man and livestock in Senegal using specific identification given by chetotaxy of cercaria. I. New arguments for the validation of S. curassoni Brumpt, 1931, parasite of man and domestic Bovidae].

Study of Senegal cercariae emitted by naturally infected snails or by snails experimentally infected using eggs from human urine or from sheep liver, and study of the corresponding eggs. The relative position of the dorsal sensillae of cercariae is described by an "AD index" and the ratio length/width of eggs by an "L/l index." At the present time, we have not finished the epidemiological studies, certain experiments are imperfect and the isoenzyme analysis of the corresponding adults is incomplete. Nevertheless information given by the indices AD and L/l agree and lead us to admit the existen

Distribution and attachment of Trypanosoma (Nannomonas) congolense in the proximal part of the proboscis of Glossina morsitans morsitans.

The distribution and attachment of Trypanosoma congolense were investigated in the proximal part of the proboscis of Glossina m. morsitans. In the food canal, epimastigotes and trypomastigotes formed tufts or compact layers. Trypanosomes were attached to the cuticle by their flagella, which formed zonar hemidesmosomes. The flagella were mostly attached parallel to the axis of the labrum and often pointed to its tip. Foot-like processes of the flagella came into contact with adjacent flagella leading to dense grouping of the trypanosomes. Despite narrow contacts between adjacent flagella, no de

Measuring Physiological Responses of Drosophila Sensory Neurons to Lipid Pheromones Using Live Calcium Imaging.

Unlike mammals, insects such as Drosophila have multiple taste organs. The chemosensory neurons on the legs, proboscis, wings and ovipositor of Drosophila express gustatory receptors(1,2), ion channels(3-6), and ionotropic receptors(7) that are involved in the detection of volatile and non-volatile sensory cues. These neurons directly contact tastants such as food, noxious substances and pheromones and therefore influence many complex behaviors such as feeding, egg-laying and mating. Electrode recordings and calcium imaging have been widely used in insects to quantify the neuronal responses ev

A hairy affair: tarantula setae-induced panuveitis requiring pars plana vitrectomy.

Cases of ocular inflammation following penetration by urticating hairs from caterpillars and tarantulas have been previously reported and although rare, the condition is increasingly being recognised as a cause of chronic panuveitis. The long-term outcomes and prognosis of this condition are not well known. This article describes a case of chronic panuveitis as a result of ocular penetration by tarantula setae, and its challenging management that ultimately required pars plana vitrectomy. Interventional case report: A 29-year-old male presented with chronic panuveitis secondary to tarantula-ha

Ammonium transporter AcAmt mutagenesis uncovers reproductive and physiological defects without impacting olfactory responses to ammonia in the malaria vector mosquito Anopheles coluzzii.

Anopheline mosquitoes are the sole vectors of malaria and rely on olfactory cues for host seeking in which ammonia derived from human sweat plays an essential role. To investigate the function of the Anopheles coluzzii ammonium transporter (AcAmt) in the mosquito olfactory system, we generated an AcAmt null mutant line using CRISPR/Cas9. AcAmt-/- mutants displayed a series of novel phenotypes compared with wild-type mosquitoes including significantly lower insemination rates during mating and increased mortality during eclosion. Furthermore, AcAmt-/- males showed significantly lower sugar cons

An evolutionarily conserved cation channel tunes the sensitivity of gustatory neurons to ephaptic inhibition in Drosophila.

In ephaptic coupling, physically adjacent neurons influence one another's activity via the electric fields they generate. To date, the molecular mechanisms that mediate and modulate ephaptic coupling's effects remain poorly understood. Here, we show that the hyperpolarization-activated cyclic nucleotide-gated (HCN) channel lateralizes the potentially mutual ephaptic inhibition between Drosophila gustatory receptor neurons (GRNs). While sweet-sensing GRNs (sGRNs) engage in ephaptic suppression of the adjacent bitter-sensing GRNs (bGRNs), HCN expression in sGRNs enables them to resist ephaptic s

New mid-Cretaceous cockroaches (Blattaria: Corydiidae) from Kachin amber illuminate the diversity of bipectinate antennae.

Antennae are vital insect sensory organs, primarily used for interactions with other organisms and the detection of the environment. Bipectinate antennae have evolved independently in the insect orders Lepidoptera, Coleoptera, Hymenoptera, Diptera and Cretaceous Mecoptera, Neuroptera, Trichoptera, and Blattaria. However, among Blattaria they are extremely rare and bipectinate antennae have been known only from one mid-Cretaceous species, while pectinate antennae were documented in two mid-Cretaceous species and one extant species from China. Here we describe Pinniblatta sylvana gen. et sp. nov

Hypodermosis by Hypoderma diana (Diptera: Hypodermatinae) in the Manchurian Wapiti (Cervus canadensis xanthopygus).

Hypoderma diana Brauer, 1858, poses a significant threat to species of deer, yet records of this species in China remain fragmented and lack comprehensive documentation. Following high mortality in wapiti populations in Inner Mongolia during 2023-2024, surveys were conducted in the Gaogesitai Hanwula Nature Reserve in March 2025. Species identity was established through rigorous morphological analysis of third-instar larvae and an emerged adult female using light and scanning electron microscopy, supplemented by a 689 bp COI fragment. Results confirmed H. diana as the causative agent, with lar

Mechanisms of CO2 sensing mediated by gustatory receptors in Holotrichia oblita larvae.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a critical cue for Holotrichia oblita larvae (white grubs), a widely distributed soil-dwelling pest, in locating host plant roots. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the perception of CO2 in white grubs remain elusive. Here, our study demonstrated that CO2 could induce electrophysiological and behavioral responses in third-instar larvae. Twelve to fourteen S4 sensilla and one digitiform organ potentially involved in CO2 detection were observed on the antenna and maxillary palp of H. oblita larvae, respectively. Three gustatory receptor (GR) genes-HoblGR1, Hobl

Dog hair volatiles attract Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato (Acari: Ixodidae) females.

Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato (s.l.) (Latreille) feeds on domestic dogs worldwide. This tick species uses dog volatiles during host-seeking behavior. In this study, we identified volatile compounds from dog hairs involved in the host location of R. sanguineus s.l. The R. sanguineus s.l. females, but not males, were attracted to hair samples and Super Q extracts from Schnauzer dogs in Y-tube olfactometer bioassays. A total of 54 compounds from dog hair extracts were identified by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry, including hydrocarbons, aldehydes, alcohols, ketones, and car

Indirect synaptic inputs from filiform hair sensory neurons contribute to the receptive fields of giant interneurons in the first-instar cockroach.

The first-instar cockroach, Periplaneta americana, detects air movements using four filiform hair sensilla, which make synaptic connections to seven pairs of giant interneurons (GIs) in the terminal abdominal ganglion. The directional sensitivities of some of the GIs, predicted from their patterns of monosynaptic inputs, may not be the same as in the second instar or adult. Intracellular recordings were made to determine the contribution of polysynaptic inputs to the receptive fields of first-instar GIs. The ventral GI1, and the dorsal GI5, GI6, and GI7 were all found to have indirect synaptic

Ultrastructure of the Eggs, Larvae, and Pupae of Hyphantria cunea (Lepidoptera: Erebidae).

Hyphantria cunea is a widespread pest that causes significant issues in forestry and agriculture, with a far-reaching global impact. However, ultramorphological studies of H. cunea, especially in terms of ultramorphological changes, are far from in-depth. Therefore, we investigated the ultrastructure of its eggs, larvae, and pupae using scanning electron microscopy, focusing on ultrastructural changes in larvae across different instars. The eggs have rough surfaces, and the micropylar region consists of rosette cells. The larval head chaetotaxy is symmetrically arranged, and there are three ty
