Application of the cholinergic agonist carbachol (50 microM) produced theta-like rhythmical waveforms, recorded in the stratum moleculare of the dentate gyrus. Atropine sulfate (50 microM) antagonized the carbachol-induced theta-like activity, consistent with this action of atropine in vivo. These results provide the first direct evidence that hippocampal neurons are capable of producing synchronized slow-wave activity when isolated from pulsed rhythmic inputs of the medial septum and other brain regions.

Congenital abnormalities of the pituitary gland are rare and may be associated with midline cranial, orbital, and facial anomalies and with hormonal insufficiency. Here we report a case of asymptomatic, abnormal migration of the adenohypophysis. The normally developed adenohypophysis was located in the sphenoid bone and developed on the intersphenoidal septum, extending from the superior pharyngeal wall to the floor of the sella turcica (craniopharyngeal canal). The abnormal migration of the pituitary gland was isolated without hormonal deficit, brain, or facial developmental anomalies.

The development of the fetal central nervous system (CNS) is a complex process influenced by genetic, environmental, and physiological factors. The absence of identifiable genetic variants and low risk of recurrence in families with certain brain malformations has led to the hypothesis that disruptive events may play a critical role in the development of brain malformations. These events include disruption of blood flow, ischemia, hemorrhage, placental insufficiency, prenatal drug exposure (e.g cocaine), and infections (e.g CMV). Likely disruptive anomalies include polymicrogyria (PMG), cerebe

In utero ethanol exposure results in a decreased concentration of serotonin (5-HT) in brain regions containing the cell bodies of 5-HT neurons and their cortical projections. The concentration of 5-HT reuptake sites is also reduced in several brain areas. The present study extended prior work by evaluating the effects of chronic maternal ethanol consumption and maternal buspirone treatment on 5-HT1A and 5-HT2A receptors in multiple brain areas of offspring. Receptors were quantitated early in postnatal development and at an age when the 5-HT networks are normally well-established. Because feta

A small fraction of humans ingesting bismuth (Bi)-containing medications develops neurotoxicity in which neuropsychiatric signs precede motor dysfunction. Large ip doses of Bi subnitrate (BSN) produce similar signs in mice, but little is known about the pathogenesis of neurotoxicity in either species. Adult female Swiss-Webster mice received a neurotoxic dose (2500 mg/kg ip) of BSN. Bi distribution and neuropathology were determined as follows: (1) Regions of central and peripheral nervous system were assayed for Bi by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) 28 days after dosing, (2) regional bra

This case report presents a 38-year-old female with unilateral open-lip schizencephaly coexisting with septo-optic dysplasia. The patient lacked motor deficits, maintaining normal developmental milestones. schizencephaly is a rare cortical malformation characterized presence of abnormal cleft in the cerebral hemispheres of the brain. These clefts extend from the surface of the brain to the ventricles. Lissencephaly can be unilateral and bilateral and divided into open lips and closed lip. It is frequently associated with other anomaly such as septo-optic dysplasia, grey matter heterotopia, sep

Endogenous opioid release has been linked to exercise. We investigated if opioid blockade following forced swimming, a common model of rodent exercise, influenced cerebral glucose metabolism in mice. PET scan was used to assess the uptake of Fludeoxyglucose (FDG-18), a marker of cerebral glucose metabolism in 19 regions of the interest in the brain following: forced swimming, an acute dose of the opioid receptor blocker naltrexone or a combination of both. Forced swimming increased glucose uptake in the cerebellum, while naltrexone + forced swimming increased glucose uptake in the hypothalamus

This article presents a 4-year-old boy who suffered from weakness of the right extremities since birth. Physical examination revealed mild mental retardation and right spastic hemiplegia. No seizures were noted. A brain CT scan showed bilateral clefts along Sylvian fissures, more marked on the left side, which communicated with the lateral ventricle. The septum pellucidum was absent. There was an evident squaring of the frontal horns. The CT findings were consistent with the diagnosis of schizencephaly. When a patient with mental retardation and spastic hemiplegia or diplegia fails to show a h

The basic morphology and neuroradiology of the prosencephalies are described. Differentiation of three groups is possible: 1. The dorsal sac category, 2. The intermediate category and 3. The pseudohemispheric category. Brains of the first group are entirely undivided into hemispheres, bowl-shaped and do have a dorsal sac. Those belonging to the intermediate category have lost the sac. Their posterior parts and the basal ganglia are increasingly cleft by incomplete interhemispheric fissure whereas the primitivity of the frontal region is fully preserved. Brains of the third category are pseudoh

RATIONALE: Non-Hodgkin lymphoma affecting the brain, eyes, and cerebrospinal fluid without systemic spread is known as primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL). While intracerebroventricular PCNSL is commonly found in the lateral ventricles and the third and fourth ventricles, the occurrence of PCNSL originating from the septum pellucidum is extremely rare.
PATIENT CONCERNS: Two patients presented with recent memory loss and high cranial pressure.
DIAGNOSES: Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a clear enhancing lesion in the septum pellucidum region. Pathological examination confirmed

In the P(50) gating or conditioning-testing paradigm in the rat, two identical click stimuli are presented with an inter-click interval of 500 ms. The reaction towards the second click, as measured with evoked potentials, is reduced in respect to that towards the first click; this phenomenon is called sensory gating. In the present experiments, the inter-click interval was varied systematically and auditory evoked potentials were measured. Sensory gating was found to occur only at intervals between 500 and 1000 ms, but not at longer intervals. Fos immunohistochemistry was then performed using

Deficiencies in cholinergic nerve function have been clearly documented in patients with Alzheimer's disease. The lack of this neurotransmitter may be responsible for early memory loss in patients with the disease. Choline mustard Az ion has been used in our laboratory to produce cholinergic hypofunction in rat brain. Injections of the compound into the medial septal nucleus and dorsal hippocampus produced tissue lesions. The lesions were dose and time-dependent. Lesions produced in the medial septum resulted in transmitter depression in the hippocampus. These results suggest non-specific tiss

Oxytocin and vasopressin share a similar chemical structure but have different functions. Both hormones are produced in different brain areas, are transported through the hypophyseal portal system, pass to the anterior hypophysis, and released to reach their target organs. These hormones also act as neuromodulators, where its receptors are found in the lateral septum, the middle amygdala, the hippocampus, the hypothalamus, and the brain stem. These brain structures regulate socio-sexual behaviors in vertebrates. Moreover, the oxytocinergic and the vasopressin systems are sexually different. Th

Regional alterations in neuronal functional activity were examined in the rat brain using cytochrome-c oxidase (COX) histochemistry following chronic neuroleptic treatment. Haloperidol, fluphenazine, and clozapine were administered to animals for 28 days after which profiles of COX activity were generated. Significant increases in COX activity were evident in area 2 of the frontal cortex of all treated animals. Clozapine and fluphenazine, but not haloperidol, caused significant increases in COX activity in the caudate nucleus, nucleus accumbens, septum, and pontine nucleus. Statistically signi

The lateral septum is a key subcortical structure and has been implicated in social memory. One aspect of social memory, the ability to recognize relatives, is conserved across vertebrate species and reflected in stable, lifelong memories. Synapses are considered to be the smallest unit of memory storage. Excitatory synapses are typically found on dendritic spines, whereas inhibitory synapses are mostly located on the dendritic shaft. Here, we investigate the synaptic architecture of unusual somatic spines, an apparent synaptic specialization of septal GABAergic neurons. We uncover the formati

Endoscopic surgery is popular in the neurosurgical field. The purpose of this study was to determine the role of endoscopy in obstructive hydrocephalus. From 1989 to 1999, we performed 81 endoscopic third ventriculostomies and 10 septostomies. Seventy-one of 81 operations were performed with endoscopic third ventriculostomy alone and 10 patients had endoscopic third ventriculostomy and ventriculoperitoneal shunt simultaneously. Age distribution varied from 2 months to 62 years of age. Our selection criteria included aqueductal stenosis (39 patients) and obstructive hydrocephalus due to tumor o
