Eliminating susceptibility induced hyperintensities in T1w MPRAGE brain images at 7 T.

INTRODUCTION: At ultrahigh field, local susceptibility induced hyperintensities are pronounced in brain areas close to air-tissue boundaries in the inferior frontal lobe and temporal lobes on T1w MPRAGE images. Resulting from incomplete inversion, these artefacts can introduce biases in brain volumetry and erroneously suggest the existence of local tissular anomaly. We propose a straightforward approach to eliminate these artefacts by applying a shift (ΔfIR) to the center frequency of the adiabatic inversion pulse while widening the bandwidth of the latter by shortening the pulse duration (ΔtI

[An Examination for Uterine Dynamic Study with Phase-sensitive Inversion-recovery].

The depth of myometrial invasion in patients with endometrial carcinoma is recognized as an important factor that closely correlates with prognosis. Preoperative assessment of myometrial invasion is essential for planning surgery. To enhance the contrast between myometrium and endometrium including myometrial invasion with endometrial carcinoma, we optimized the sequence parameter with phase-sensitive inversion-recovery (PSIR) in gadolinium dynamic study of uterine corpus. On a 1.5-T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), images were acquired by three-dimensional (3D) T1 -turbo field echo (TFE) wit

Can running cause the appearance of marrow edema on MR images of the foot and ankle?

PURPOSE: To determine if runners have an increased prevalence of marrow edema in the foot and ankle compared with nonrunners at magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ankles and feet were imaged in 20 runners and 12 nonrunners with a fast short inversion time inversion-recovery sequence at 1.5 T. Edema within each bone was graded from 0 (no edema) to 3 (severe edema). Total scores for each subject equaled the sum of the grades. RESULTS: Reader 1 found edema in 16 of 20 runners and four of 12 nonrunners (P < .04); runners had a mean score of 4.7 and nonrunners had a mean scor

Combined fat- and water-suppressed MR imaging of orbital tumors.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The use of a high-resolution T2-weighted MR sequence, which suppresses signal from both fat and water, has been shown to be highly effective for depicting areas of inflammatory damage within the optic nerve. The ability of this sequence to show neoplastic and inflammatory orbital lesions, which may mimic neuritis, is unknown. This study was designed to examine the characteristics of such a sequence for the investigation of orbital mass lesions. METHODS: Twenty-eight patients with known or suspected mass lesions of the orbit and six healthy volunteers were recruited for

Imaging of endolymphatic and perilymphatic fluid at 3T after intratympanic administration of gadolinium-diethylene-triamine pentaacetic acid.

By optimizing the inversion time of a 3D inversion-recovery turbo spin-echo sequence at 3T, we obtained separate images of endolymphatic and perilymphatic space 24 hours after intratympanic administration of gadolinium contrast material. In patients with Ménière disease, endolymphatic hydrops were detected not only in the cochlea but also in the vestibule. Fusion of the 2 types of images visualized the entire fluid space of the labyrinth and the spatial relationship of the 2 spaces.

Magnetic resonance imaging of the retroperitoneum.

The results of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations in 50 patients with histological or clinical diagnoses of retroperitoneal disorders and 20 normal volunteers are presented. An increase in relaxation time (T1) was recognised in most pathological conditions except for four liposarcomas and one adrenal cortical neoplasm and one metastatic lesion of the same gland. Inversion recovery (IR) provided the best tissue contrast, enabling the detection of small lesions. Flow-dependent sequences and sagittal imaging planes were particularly helpful in the evaluation of aortic aneurysms. Ferric

Comparison of two fat-suppressed magnetic resonance imaging pulse sequences to standard t2-weighted images for brain parenchymal contrast and lesion detection in dogs with inflammatory intracranial disease.

T2-weighted (T2w) sequences are commonly relied upon in magnetic resonance imaging protocols for the detection of brain lesions in dogs. Previously, the effect of fluid suppression via fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) has been compared to T2-weighting with mixed results. Short tau inversion recovery (STIR) has been reported to increase the detection of some CNS lesions in people. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the effect of fat suppression on brain parenchymal contrast resolution and lesion detection in dogs. We compared three sequences: T2w images, STIR, and T2w F

Reconstructing hominid Y evolution: X-homologous block, created by X-Y transposition, was disrupted by Yp inversion through LINE-LINE recombination.

The human X and Y chromosomes share many blocks of similar DNA sequence. We conducted mapping and nucleotide sequencing studies of extensive, multi-megabase homologies between Yp and Xq21, which do not recombine during male meiosis. We confirmed and built upon previous evidence that a Yp inversion had occurred during evolution: a single contiguous segment of Xq21 is homologous to two non-contiguous segments of Yp. We precisely defined and sequenced the inversion breakpoints, obtaining evidence that the inversion was mediated by recombination between LINE-1 elements in otherwise non-homologous

Cavitation after acute symptomatic lacunar stroke depends on time, location, and MRI sequence.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Definitions for chronic lacunar infarcts vary. Recent retrospective studies suggest that many acute lacunar strokes do not develop a cavitated appearance. We determined the characteristics of acute lacunar infarcts on follow-up MRI in consecutive patients participating in prospective research studies. METHODS: Patients with acute lacunar infarction on diffusion-weighted imaging were selected from 3 prospective cohort studies of minor stroke imaged within <24 hours of onset. Follow-up MRI was performed at 30 days (Vascular Imaging of Acute Stroke for Identifying Predict

Lineage-associated small inversions disrupt dosT, dnaE2, and a promoter-adjacent region in some Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates.

UNLABELLED: Large molecular inversions in the genome of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) due to factors like the presence of insertion sequences and transposases are widely known. However, smaller inversions within coding sequences and non-coding control elements are rarely reported. The present study aims to identify inversions and their potential impact on Mtb biology in a lineage-specific manner. Structural variants (SVs) could only be detected by long reads. For this, we simulated long reads by de novo assembling the short-read sequencing data sets and subsequently aligned representative s

Birth and death of genes linked to chromosomal inversion.

The birth and death of genes is central to adaptive evolution, yet the underlying genome dynamics remain elusive. The availability of closely related complete genome sequences helps to follow changes in gene contents and clarify their relationship to overall genome organization. Helicobacter pylori, bacteria in our stomach, are known for their extreme genome plasticity through mutation and recombination and will make a good target for such an analysis. In comparing their complete genome sequences, we found that gain and loss of genes (loci) for outer membrane proteins, which mediate host inter
