BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: To report a case of serology-negative severe disseminated Bartonella neuroretinitis in an immunocompromised patient in which diagnosis was made by detection of B. henselae DNA by universal polymerase chain reaction of brain tissue.

Two cases of brucellar spondylodiscitis of the lumbar area were presented. Although both cases showed typical radiological changes, serological tests could not detect Brucella agglutinating antibodies. One of the patients was bacteremic and Brucella spp. was identified from blood culture. In the second patient needle biopsy was required for definite diagnosis. Although small, serologic tests have a certain rate of false negative results in brucellosis. Thus, a negative serology should not exclude the diagnosis of brucellosis, as it is demonstrated in the current cases.

This study has confirmed the nucleotide sequence of exons 2 and 3 of the B*4703 allele, discovered by an unusual HLA-B47 and Bw6 serological pattern, in two subjects of Black/Japanese and Caribbean Black descent. Fifty-seven infertile women were studied for presence of chlamydial infection by detecting antichlamydial antibodies using indirect immunoperoxidase assay technique. Laparoscopy was performed in all of them. Inflammatory changes in fallopian tubes were present irrespective of serological status. Thus no rigid criteria for carrying out laparoscopy can be made. A high index of suspicion is required for detection of chlamydial infection as it runs an indolent course with no specific symptoms.

A new haemagglutination assay for Vi antibodies was evaluated in searches for symptom-free carriers of Salmonella typhi associated with sporadic cases of typhoid fever. The assay differs from previous ones in that a purified (instead of crude) Vi antigen from Citrobacter was used to sensitise the red blood cells.
