Necrotizing cellulitis with multiple abscesses on the leg caused by Serratia marcescens.

Serratia marcescens is an unusual cause of severe skin infection initially described in immunocompromised patients. We report a case of necrotizing cellulitis of the leg caused by S marcescens in a 68-year-old woman with diabetes mellitus and a history of chronic lymphoedema of the leg. We reviewed the literature and found 49 cases of severe skin infections from S marcescens that included 20 cases of necrotizing fasciitis (NF) as well as 29 cases of severe skin infections without NF (non-NF cases). Patients were immunocompromised in 59% to 70% of cases. The mortality rate was high in NF cases

CdTe quantum dots as a novel biosensor for Serratia marcescens and Lipopolysaccharide.

The main objective of this work is to synthesize CdTe quantum dots (QDs) conjugated with Concanavalin A (Con A) as a novel biosensor to be selective and specific for the detection of Lipopolysaccharide (LPS). In addition, the conjugated CdTe QDs-Con A was used as fluorescence labels to capture Serratia marcescens bacteria through the recognition between CdTe QDs-Con A and LPS of S. marcescens. The appearance of the lattice plans in the high resolution transmission electron photograph indicated a high crystalline with an average size of 4-5 nm for the CdTe QDs. The results showed that the relat

[Occurrence of beta-lactamase type ESBL in rods of the Serratia species].

Serratia spp. has been identified as an important opportunistic pathogen agent in nosocomial infections. The aim of the study was the determination of extended spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL) occurrence among 78 of Serratia spp. strains isolated in 1996-1998 from clinical specimens obtained from patients of State Clinical Hospital in Bydgoszcz. Identification of Serratia spp. strains was performed in automatic ATB system with ID 32GN strips (bioMérieux). The strains with ESBL activity were detected by double-disc method according to Jarlier et al. (10) with small modifications. Clavulanic acid

The role of outer membrane in Serratia marcescens intrinsic resistance to antibiotics.

Three different porins from Serratia marcescens were described. They were named Omp1, Omp2 and Omp3 and their molecular weights were 42, 40 and 39 kDa respectively. Omp2 and Omp3 showed osmoregulation and thermoregulation in a similar way to OmpC and OmpF of Escherichia coli. Permeability coefficients of the outer membrane of this species were calculated following the Zimmermann and Rosselet method. P values were similar to those obtained in Escherichia coli, which suggests that the chromosomal beta-lactamase would play a major role in the resistance of Serratia marcescens to beta-lactam antib

Serratia marcescens as a cause of postoperative infection in a total joint implant.

Serratia marcescens is a rare cause of musculoskeletal infections and osteomyelitis occurring most frequently in nosocomial infections, debilitated patients, drug addicts, and traumatic open wounds. It is rarely a cause of postoperative infection in elective surgery with only a few such cases being reported in the United States and European literature. The authors present a case of Serratia marcescens infection of a total joint implant from an apparent perioperative source and review the literature concerning this organism as a cause of infection in man.

In-vitro susceptibility of clinical isolates of Serratia species to antimicrobial agents.

The in-vitro activities of 12 antimicrobial agents against a total of 80 clinical isolates of Serratia marcescens and Serratia liquefaciens were determined by a broth microdilution method. Ampicillin and cefazolin were totally inactive against these organisms. The other beta-lactam antibiotics such as piperacillin, cefotaxime, ceftazidime, and the aminoglycosides such as gentamicin, tobramycin and netilmicin showed poor or moderate activity against Serratia isolates. Aztreonam and amikacin inhibited most of the strains tested. Imipenem and ciprofloxacin were very active in inhibiting all strai

Association of Pseudomonas and Serratia corneal ulcers with use of contaminated solutions.

The wetting and soaking solutions and contact lens cases of eye clinic patients commonly were contaminated with gram-negative bacteria during their use. Serratia marcescens occurred most frequently in preserved solutions, whereas Pseudomonas aeruginosa was most often recovered from home-prepared saline. The bacteria were recovered at densities of greater than 10(6) cells per ml and typically persisted in the solutions. Eight patients who developed bacterial keratitis during 1986 used solutions contaminated with the etiological agents of the infections. Improper hygienic practices of the patien

Antimicrobial Resistance of Serratia marcescens Recovered From Aquatic Environments: A Review.

Serratia marcescens is a gram-negative bacillus commonly found in aquatic environments. This opportunistic human pathogen can form biofilms and acquire resistance to multiple antimicrobial classes, raising public and environmental health concerns. The occurrence of antimicrobial-resistant S. marcescens in aquatic ecosystems is alarming, yet relatively few studies have addressed this topic in depth. To compile and analyse studies on the antimicrobial susceptibility profiles and resistance mechanisms of S. marcescens isolated from aquatic environments. A systematic search was performed in PubMed

Serratia marcescens causing recurrent superficial skin infections in an immunosuppressed patient.

Serratia marcescens is a gram-negative bacterium found commonly in water and soil. Initially thought to be non-pathogenic, it is now recognised as an important cause of nosocomial and opportunistic infections. Skin infections are rare, but cases of S. marcescens causing ulcers, abscesses and necrotizing fasciitis have been reported. We report an unusual cutaneous presentation of S. marcescens in an immunosuppressed patient. A 77-year-old man under review for non-melanoma skin cancer in the context of a previous cardiac transplant, presented with an asymptomatic scalp eruption. Immunosuppressiv

Identification and degradation characterization of hexachlorobutadiene degrading strain Serratia marcescens HL1.

A bacterium (strain HL1) capable of growing with hexachlorobutadiene (HCBD) as sole carbon and energy sources was isolated from a mixture of soil contaminated with HCBD and activated sludge obtained from petrochemical plant wastewater treatment plant by using enrichment culture. Biochemical characteristics and phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rDNA sequence indicate that strain HL1 clearly belongs to Serratia marcescens sp. Resting cells of strain HL1 were found to remove HCBD from culture fluids with the concomitant release of chloride ion under aerobic conditions. The ranges of pH value and

Lower Limb Serratia marcescens Necrotizing Fasciitis Complicated by Nosocomial COVID-19.

Serratia marcescens represents an unusual yet potentially deadly cause of lower limb necrotizing fasciitis (NF). Compounding the already high mortality of NF, S. marcescens infections are usually associated with worse outcomes (i.e., amputation). Here we present the case of a 56-year-old immunocompromised man due to lupus nephritis who developed lower limb NF secondary to S. marcescens followed by nosocomial coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pneumonitis. Successful limb salvage was achieved through a multidisciplinary team approach from various specialties including plastic surgery, orthoped

Evolutionary significance and functional characterization of streptomycin adenylyltransferase from Serratia marcescens.

Complete functional annotations of proteins are essential to understand the role and mechanisms in pathogenesis. Aminoglycoside nucleotidyltransferases are the subclasses of aminoglycosides modifying enzymes conferring resistance to organisms. Insight into the structural and functional understanding of nucleotidyltransferase family protein provides vital information to combat pathogenesis. Phylogenetic analysis is employed to identify the evolutionary significance and common motif's present among the homologs of nucleotidyltransferase family protein. Structure, sequence based approaches and mo

Serratia marcescens thigh infection after transobturator sling without associated mesh exposure.

INTRODUCTION: Soft tissue complications of the thigh occur after transobturator slings and are reported to uniformly accompany mesh exposure. Most commonly identified microorganisms cultured from such soft tissue infections include Bacteroides and Streptococcus species. This is the first reported case of Serratia marcescens leading to thigh cellulitis after a transobturator sling and the complication occurred in the absence of exposed mesh. CASE: A 54-year-old presented 7 days after a transobturator sling with right thigh cellulitis and sepsis in the absence of mesh exposure. She underwent ex

Premature termination of nursing secondary to Serratia marcescens breast pump contamination.

BACKGROUND: Serratia marcescens, a known pathogen associated with postpartum mastitis, may be identified by its characteristic pigmentation. CASE: A 36-year-old P0102 woman presented postpartum and said that her breast pump tubing had turned bright pink. S marcescens was isolated, indicating colonization. She was started on antibiotics. After viewing an Internet report in which a patient nearly died from a Serratia infection, she immediately stopped breastfeeding. CONCLUSION: Serratia colonization may be noted before the development of overt infection. Because this pathogen can be associated

Ulcerative keratitis caused by Serratia marcescens after laser in situ keratomileusis.

We report 2 cases of severe corneal infections caused by Serratia marcescens after laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK). Twenty-four hours after LASIK, 2 patients developed infectious keratitis, 1 bilaterally. In each eye, the corneal flap was edematous, ulcerated, and detached from the stromal bed. Treatment included removal of the necrotic flap and aggressive antibiotic therapy. Cultures from corneal exudates were positive for S marcescens. After 1 year, both patients had a loss of best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) ranging from 20/40 to 20/22 because of irregular astigmatism. Overrefractio

Serratia marcescens endocarditis: a regional illness associated with intravenous drug abuse.

From 1969 to 1974, 19 cases of Serratia marcescens endocarditis were observed in the San Francisco Bay Area. Seventeen patients were intravenous drug users, and Serratia caused 14% of all addict-associated endocarditis in San Francisco. Serratia strains were nonpigmented and had typical antibiotic sensitivities, except that 9 of the isolates exhibited colonial variation, with each variant having different antibiotic sensitivities. Aortic or mitral valves were involved in 13 patients, and heart failure developed in 9 of these. Twelve patients had embolic episodes to brain, iliofemoral arteries,
