First report on toxicity assessment of the Lessepsian migrant pufferfish Lagocephalus sceleratus (Gmelin, 1789) from European waters (Aegean Sea, Greece).

According to the current European Union legislative requirements (Regulation 853/2004/EC; Regulation 854/2004/EC, poisonous fish of the family Tetraodontidae and products derived from them must not be placed on the European markets. Following the increased publicity regarding the presence of the pufferfish species Lagocephalus sceleratus in Greek waters, this study was undertaken in order to confirm its toxicity and assess the risk of poisoning in case of accidental consumption. Acidic extracts from tissues of L. sceleratus specimens of different sizes were examined by means of the official mo

Kounis syndrome following canned tuna fish ingestion.

Kounis syndrome (KS) is a complex of cardiovascular symptoms and signs following either allergy or hypersensitivity and anaphylactic or anaphylactoid insults. We report the case of 57-year-old man, with hypertension and history of allergy, referred for facial rash and palpitations appeared after consumption of canned tuna fish. Suddenly, the patient collapsed: electrocardiogram showed ST-elevation in inferior leads. The patient was transferred from the spoke emergency room for coronary angio, which did not show any sign of coronary atherosclerosis. A transient coronary spasm was therefore hypo

Effects of marine harmful algal blooms on bivalve cellular immunity and infectious diseases: A review.

Bivalves were long thought to be "symptomless carriers" of marine microalgal toxins to human seafood consumers. In the past three decades, science has come to recognize that harmful algae and their toxins can be harmful to grazers, including bivalves. Indeed, studies have shown conclusively that some microalgal toxins function as active grazing deterrents. When responding to marine Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) events, bivalves can reject toxic cells to minimize toxin and bioactive extracellular compound (BEC) exposure, or ingest and digest cells, incorporating nutritional components and toxins. Multistate outbreak of viral gastroenteritis associated with consumption of oysters--Apalachicola Bay, Florida, December 1994-January 1995.

On January 3, 1995, the Florida Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services (HRS) was notified of an outbreak of acute gastroenteritis associated with eating oysters. The subsequent investigation by HRS has identified 34 separate clusters of cases, many of which were associated with oysters harvested during December 29-31 from 13 Mile Area and Cat Point in Apalachicola Bay. Oysters were shipped to other states, but additional clusters of illness associated with these oysters have been reported only in Georgia. Most of these oysters were served steamed or roasted. This report summarizes th

Magnetic nanostructures for marine and freshwater toxins removal.

Marine and freshwater toxins contaminate water resources, shellfish and aquaculture products, causing a broad range of toxic effects in humans and animals. Different core-shell nanoparticles were tested as a new sorbent for removing marine and freshwater toxins from liquid media. Water solutions were contaminated with 20 μg/L of marine toxins and up to 50 μg/L of freshwater toxins and subsequently treated with 250 or 125 mg/L of nanoparticles. Under these conditions, carbon nanoparticles removed around 70% of saxitoxins, spirolides, and azaspiracids, and up to 38% of diarrheic shellfish poison

Sublethal oral exposure to the marine toxin PbTx3: Neurotoxicity assessment in mice.

Brevetoxins (PbTxs) are marine polyether compounds produced by the alga Karenia brevis, which accumulate in shellfish and fish, and transferred through the marine food web. These toxins impact both marine ecosystems and human health. Consumption of contaminated shellfish is the primary cause of Neurotoxic Shellfish Poisoning (NSP), which presents with neurological, gastrointestinal, and/or cardiovascular symptoms that appear in a few hours and typically resolves within 1-3 days, although some disturbances may persist for weeks or months. The acute toxicity of PbTxs involves activation of volta

Biogenic amines in fish, fish products and shellfish: a review.

Fish, cephalopods and shellfish provide a healthy source of high-quality proteins, essential vitamins, minerals and polyunsaturated fatty acids. The beneficial effects of fish consumption on human health such as protection against coronary heart disease and certain cancer may be offset by fish decomposition and the formation of chemical contaminants such as biogenic amines. There are several toxicological effects of biogenic amines on humans, especially histamine. It is the causative agent of histamine or scombroid fish poisoning which is a significant public health problem. In individuals wit

Metabarcoding Reveals Diversity of Potentially Toxic Algae in Papeete Port (Tahiti).

Harmful algae are transported in various compartments of maritime vessels, making ports with heavy maritime traffic potential hotspots for their introduction and spread. In this study, we investigate the port of Papeete (Tahiti, French Polynesia), a key hub for numerous South Pacific shipping routes. Using metabarcoding on DNA extracted from water samples (environmental DNA, eDNA) we identified 21 species of harmful algae comprising to Bacillariophyceae (4), Dinophyceae (14), and Haptophyta (3 species). Three of those species are directly associated with fish mortality events without recognize

Dose-response assessment for impaired memory from chronic exposure to domoic acid among native American consumers of razor clams.

Domoic acid (DA) is a marine neurotoxin that accumulates in filtering shellfish during harmful algal blooms. A health protection limit of 20 ppm DA in razor clams (RC) has been set based principally upon an episode of acute DA toxicity in humans that included Amnesic Shellfish Poisoning among survivors. The objective of this study was to determine the dose-response relationship between estimated DA exposure through RC consumption and memory loss in Washington state Native Americans from 2005 to 2015. Results from total learning recall (TLR) memory scores were compared before and after the high

Immune effects of the neurotoxins ciguatoxins and brevetoxins.

Ciguatoxins (CTXs) and brevetoxins (PbTxs) are phycotoxins that can accumulate along the marine food chain and thus cause seafood poisoning in humans, namely "ciguatera fish poisoning" (CFP) and "neurotoxic shellfish poisoning" (NSP), respectively. CFP is characterized by early gastrointestinal symptoms and typical sensory disorders (paraesthesia, pain, pruritus and cold dysaesthesia), which can persist several weeks and, in some cases, several months or years. NSP is considered a mild form of CFP with similar but less severe symptoms. After inhaled exposure, PbTxs can also cause respiratory t

Health risk assessment related to pinnatoxins in French shellfish.

Pinnatoxins (PnTXs) are a group of emerging marine biotoxins produced by the benthic dinoflagellate Vulcanodinium rugosum, currently not regulated in Europe or in any other country in the world. In France, PnTXs were detected for the first time in 2011, in mussels from the Ingril lagoon (South of France, Mediterranean coast). Since then, analyses carried out in mussels from this lagoon have shown high concentrations of PnTXs for several months each year. PnTXs have also been detected, to a lesser extent, in mussels from other Mediterranean lagoons and on the Atlantic and Corsican coasts. In th

Ecological and physiological studies of Gymnodinium catenatum in the Mexican Pacific: a review.

This review presents a detailed analysis of the state of knowledge of studies done in Mexico related to the dinoflagellate Gymnodinium catenatum, a paralytic toxin producer. This species was first reported in the Gulf of California in 1939; since then most studies in Mexico have focused on local blooms and seasonal variations. G. catenatum is most abundant during March and April, usually associated with water temperatures between 18 and 25 °C and an increase in nutrients. In vitro studies of G. catenatum strains from different bays along the Pacific coast of Mexico show that this species can g

Harmful algal blooms and their effects in coastal seas of Northern Europe.

Harmful algal blooms (HAB) are recurrent phenomena in northern Europe along the coasts of the Baltic Sea, Kattegat-Skagerrak, eastern North Sea, Norwegian Sea and the Barents Sea. These HABs have caused occasional massive losses for the aquaculture industry and have chronically affected socioeconomic interests in several ways. This status review gives an overview of historical HAB events and summarises reports to the Harmful Algae Event Database from 1986 to the end of year 2019 and observations made in long term monitoring programmes of potentially harmful phytoplankton and of phycotoxins in

Human Poisoning from Marine Toxins: Unknowns for Optimal Consumer Protection.

Marine biotoxins are produced by aquatic microorganisms and accumulate in shellfish or finfish following the food web. These toxins usually reach human consumers by ingestion of contaminated seafood, although other exposure routes like inhalation or contact have also been reported and may cause serious illness. This review shows the current data regarding the symptoms of acute intoxication for several toxin classes, including paralytic toxins, amnesic toxins, ciguatoxins, brevetoxins, tetrodotoxins, diarrheic toxins, azaspiracids and palytoxins. The information available about chronic toxicity

Neuro-2a cell-based assay for toxicity equivalency factor - proposal and evaluation in Chilean contaminated shellfish samples.

There are two official PSP detection methods (mouse bioassay and HLPC-FLD) and a number of alternative methods. Ethical considerations have led to regulations being adopted in some countries that limit or prohibit the application of mouse bioassay. Analytical methodologies (e.g. HPLC-FLD or LC-MSMS) have the disadvantages of not being able to detect new toxins or analogues or reflecting the overall toxicity of the sample. In addition, they require highly trained personnel and expensive equipment, which are not always available. In this work, we have evaluated a method based on the Neuro-2a cel

Distribution of the genus Alexandrium (Halim) and paralytic shellfish toxins along the coastline of New South Wales, Australia.

Blooms of Alexandrium species, in particular the species Alexandrium catenella, accounted for more than 50% of algal related, shellfish aquaculture harvest zone closures in New South Wales (NSW) Australia since 2005. While there are indications that species of Alexandrium are more abundant than they were formerly, there is little data available on the spatial and temporal distribution and abundance of the genus in NSW. A six and a half year dataset comprising a total of 8649 fortnightly samples from 31 estuaries spread over 2000 km of NSW coastline was analysed. The greatest abundances of Alex

LC-MS/MS method for the determination of tetrodotoxin (TTX) on a triple quadruple mass spectrometer.

Tetrodotoxin (TTX), often referred to as the 'puffer fish' poison, is a marine toxin and it has been identified as the agent responsible for many food poisoning incidents around the world. It is a neurotoxin that blocks voltage-gated sodium channels, resulting in respiratory paralysis and even death in severe cases. It is known to occur in many different species of fish and other organisms. The toxin is mainly found in the Southeast Asia region. Worryingly, TTX is starting to appear in European waters. It is suspected that this is a consequence of Lessepsian migration, also known as the Erythr

Prevalence, enterotoxin-gene profiles, antimicrobial resistance, and genetic diversity of Bacillus cereus group in aquatic environments and shellfish.

Bacterial strains of the Bacillus cereus group produce various toxins that cause diarrheal and emetic food poisoning. In this study, five main oyster farming areas and 15 fishing ports in Taiwan were examined for the status of B. cereus group bacteria inhabiting seawater and shellfish. On average, bacteria of the B. cereus group were detected in 32.6% of the seawater samples (n = 89) and 2.5% of the oysters (n = 81) in the oyster farming areas and in 7.9% of the seawater samples (n = 202) and 0.68% of the shellfish products (n = 292) in fishing ports. To trace the potential source of B. cereus

Multiple organ damage caused by a new toxin azaspiracid, isolated from mussels produced in Ireland.

A new type of food poisoning resulting from ingestion of mussels produced in Ireland occurred in the Netherlands in 1995 and then reoccurred in Ireland in 1997. As the causative agent, azaspiracid, was isolated in pure form and revealed to have a structure entirely unlike other known algal toxins, in vivo studies with mice were carried out to elucidate the pathological injuries caused by the toxin. By per os administration, the toxin caused necrosis in the lamina propria of the small intestine and in lymphoid tissues such as thymus, spleen and the Peyer's patches. Both T and B lymphocytes were
