OBJECTIVES: To assess the adequacy of gadolinium in sialography as an alternative contrast agent for patients with iodine allergies. To directly compare images taken with gadolinium versus iodine-based contrast agents using the Iowa Sialography Classification System.
METHODS: Retrospective chart review was performed on patients undergoing sialography between February 2008 and July 2022. Patients with sialograms obtained with gadolinium were identified and matched to similar sialograms obtained with iodine-based contrast agent. Patients were matched based on duct location, duct side, and initi

A study was carried out to compare routine sialography and combination sialo-CT. The results in 36 patients with afflictions of the parotid and submandibular region are discussed. In addition to tumors, regarded as primary indications, inflammatory disorders were also considered. The diagnosis made by routine sialography is regularly confirmed by computed sialography (CTS), which is often an important complementary means. Visualization of the deep parotid lobe and parapharyngeal space (third plane) is very important for making the diagnosis and planning therapy.

BACKGROUND: Chronic recurrent non-specific parotitis is characterized by recurrent episodes of swelling and pain of unknown etiology in the parotid gland. Sialography is a hallmark in the diagnosis of salivary gland disorders; newer imaging modalities like CT-Sialography, sialoendoscopy and MRI can be used. Various treatment modalities have been tried, from conservative approach to surgical excision depending on the recurrence rate and severity of the condition. Although symptomatic treatment with antibiotics and analgesic, injection of intraductal medicament, aggressive treatment like duct li

The algorithm for imaging the salivary glands depends on the clinical scenario with which the patient presents to the clinician. Because of the importance of identifying small calculi in the gland or salivary duct as the cause of the symptom complex, nonenhanced computed tomography is often the best initial study for the evaluation of the painful gland. If an infiltrative neoplasm is highly suspected, nonenhanced and enhanced magnetic resonance (MR) imaging may be superior in demonstrating perineural, meningeal, and skull base invasion. Sialography is reserved for the evaluation of chronic sia

In review of the clinical and sialographic ability to predict parotid pathology, it was found that the clinical exam was consistently more accurate. Sialographic findings and histopathology were compared in 119 patients who underwent 120 sialograms and subsequent parotidectomies. Sialography alone was able to diagnose a malignant tumor in only 8 per cent (1/13) of the cases. The sialogram proved most helpful for the clinician in the management of patients when the diagnosis was calculus, obstruction, or sialectasia. On the other hand, mass lesions in or adjacent to the parotid, diffuse enlarge

Photographic subtraction used in the examination of salivary glands was compared with conventional sialography. Subtraction images obtained from the duct system of parotid glands demonstrated the same images as were obtained by conventional sialography. In duct system of the submaxillary glands, however, the conventional sialograms were clearer than those images obtained by subtraction procedures. Subtraction images could provide the outward form of salivary glands, especially in the parotid glands. In most cases, sialography with subtraction provides valuable informations in diagnosing saliva

OBJECTIVE: Characterize radiographic findings and co-existing pathologic processes in the parotid glands of patients with swelling or pain identified on radiographic review to be consistent with sialosis (sialadenosis) employing dynamic infusion digital sialography correlated with computed tomography (CT).
METHODS: Retrospective chart review of a consecutive series of 578 sialograms performed by the senior investigator over a 16-year period identified 39 patients with 1 or both parotid gland sialograms recorded as "sialosis" by radiologists' interpretation. After inclusion and exclusion crite

OBJECTIVES: Salivary duct disorders are the second most common cause of obstruction after calculi. Magnetic resonance sialography has been recently proposed as a means of diagnosing a heterogeneous group of salivary disorders, and so we compared it with sialoendoscopy in evaluating stenoses and sialectasia in 24 patients with obstructive symptoms and ultrasonographic results negative for calculi or masses.
METHODS: All of the patients (19 of whom had recurrent unilateral or bilateral swollen parotid glands and 5 of whom also had recurrent swollen submandibular glands) underwent dynamic color

OBJECTIVES: To establish an inflammation grading system for radioactive iodine-induced sialadenitis (RAIS) based on spiral computed tomography (CT), ultrasonography and sialography.
METHODS: In all, 120 RAIS patients (18 males and 102 females) were retrospectively included. Spiral CT, ultrasonography and sialography appearances were analysed and categorized as follows: grade I, approximately normal or mild sialadenitis; grade II, moderate sialadenitis; and grade III, severe sialadenitis. Adenitis severity was analysed relative to sex, age, RAI treatment sessions and cumulative doses.

Seventy patients with major salivary gland diseases (60 parotis, 10 submandibular) were examined both with sialography and ultrasonography. The clinical and histopathological results were compared with radiological interpretations. Sialography was found to be 60% accurate for the diagnosis of salivary gland tumors and cysts and 63% for the diagnosis of inflammatory diseases. Ultrasonography diagnosed 95% of the tumors and 63% of inflammatory diseases accurately.

Lithiasis is the most common disease of salivary glands after mumps. The purpose of this review is to analyze the respective role of the different available imaging techniques for the diagnosis of lithiasis and related complications since the treatment of salivary lithiasis has evolved with the emergence of minimally invasive and non surgical techniques. In spite of its limitations, US represents an excellent first line imaging technique because it is non-invasive and widely available. Non contrast helical CT with multiplanar reconstructions seems to be the gold standard for the diagnosis of l

The etiology for salivary gland stone formation, one of the most common salivary gland problems, is still unknown. In many cases the diagnosis is easy due to obvious clinical features, but for treatment considerations, imaging studies are very often necessary. Sonography or MR sialography have replaced sialography in the evaluation of patients with sialolithiasis. Besides traditional surgical procedures, new conservative treatment modalities like extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy or interventional sialendoscopy are now available for the management of salivary gland stones.

The clinical value of salivary gland scintigraphy (RI-sialography) was studied in 11 cases with definite Sjögren's syndrome. Time-activity curves which were obtained from computer-assisted analysis of RI-sialography were classified into 4 types (N:normal type, M:median type, F:flat type, S:sloped type), and the efficacy of scintigraphy in evaluating salivary gland function and the relationship between time-activity curves and other diagnostic methods are discussed. Flattened time-activity curves such as F- or S-type were more often seen in submandibular glands than in parotid glands. Flattened

A case of primary sialoangiectasia, which in this case was initially misdiagnosed as Sjögren's syndrome, is described. Other diseases, including HIV infection, psoriatic arthritis, and acute parotitis, may cause glandular changes similar to the changes found in the syndrome. Therefore, sialography must be combined with other methods of assessment of the oral cavity when suspicion is high for Sjögren's syndrome. Properly applied, sialography provides essential information regarding the severity of glandular damage and the progression of the disease.

We report a case of an abscess from an 'ectopic' accessory parotid gland in the cheek demonstrated by sialography and computed tomography (CT). The accessory parotid gland was ectopically located anterolateral to the masseter muscle and isolated from the main parotid gland. The orifice and ductal system of the ectopic accessory parotid gland were separated from those of Stensen's duct. The abscess developed from this ectopic accessory gland, and the main parotid gland was free of inflammation. Using sialography and CT, we confirmed the presence of this ectopic accessory gland.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic obstructive sialadenitis (COS) is an entity that causes a marked loss in patient quality of life, including changes in eating habits and a progressive loss of gland function. It is characterized by repeated episodes of painful glandular swelling often requiring emergency care. There are multiple causes of COS, including lithiasis, strictures, anatomical variants, and others. The development of specific imaging tests such as magnetic resonance (MR) sialography or sialendoscopy have increased knowledge of these obstructions and how to specifically treat them.

Salivary gland sialoceles are relatively common and may be a complication of trauma with a penetrating salivary gland injury or may be a complication of salivary gland surgery. The development of new diagnostic tools such as magnetic resonance sialography and endoscopic techniques has led to further improvements in the clinical and diagnostic assessment of this condition, and botulinum toxin therapy has recently been described in the management of parotid sialoceles. We here report the case of a 41-year-old patient with an unusually complicated parotid sialocele following an unsuccessful attem

The objective of this study was to examine the clinical and immunological factors influencing the efficacy of cevimeline hydrochloride hydrate (cevimeline) for the treatment of xerostomia in patients with Sjögren's syndrome (SS). Thirty primary SS patients who were medicated with cevimeline were enrolled in this study. Whole stimulated sialometry (WSS) was compared between pre- and posttreatment points (4 weeks after oral cevimeline administration) and the increment rate of WSS was calculated. Multiple regression was employed to examine the relative contributions of the clinical and immunologi

PURPOSE: To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of computed tomography (CT) of the parotid gland for Sjögren's syndrome in comparison with conventional X-ray sialography.
METHODS: CT scans and X-ray sialography were performed in 34 patients with confirmed Sjögren's syndrome and 22 symptomatic controls without the disease. CT data from 57 asymptomatic controls were included for quantitative analysis. The CT findings of heterogeneity, abnormal diffuse fat tissue deposition, diffuse punctate calcification, swelling or atrophy, nodularity or cystic changes of the parotid gland were analyzed by two i

The greatest part of all diseases of salivary glands are caused by inflammations. The differential diagnosis to other diseases, e.g. tumors, if of great importance. The sialography has hereby developed to an important diagnostic measurement. There is a discussion about the technique of the sialography and its simple performance as well as the high effectiveness of this X-ray examination. The X-ray morphology of different kinds of inflammations is various. The acute inflammations are characterized by narrowing of ducts, the subacute inflammations by the pathological staining of the parenchyma,
