Developing a framework for the prevention of sibling sexual behaviour.

BACKGROUND: Sibling sexual behaviour (SSB) is an existing, but poorly defined, area of professional practice and an emerging research area. Much of the research conversations are focused on defining the issue and thinking about the treatment and management of people affected by it. However, in line with other forms of sexual abuse, focus should also be on how SSB can be prevented from happening, alongside the prevention of repeat behaviours. OBJECTIVE: In this paper the emerging debates around SSB prevention, what exists, and how it should develop is discussed. METHODS: The recently develope

Spousal and other living renal donor transplants.

Aside from HLA identical sibling donors, spousal donor transplants are the best living donors because their 3-year graft survival is comparable to that of all other living donors--with the exception of HLA identical siblings. Interestingly, the 14.5 year half-life of spousal donor kidneys was superior to the 10.8 year half-life of other living donor transplants. Better quality kidneys is the principal explanation for higher spousal donor graft survival rates when compared with cadaver donors. This was evident from the 2% anuria rate in the first post-operative day for spouse donor compared wit

No Evidence That Siblings' Gender Affects Personality Across Nine Countries.

Does growing up with a sister rather than a brother affect personality? In this article, we provide a comprehensive analysis of the effects of siblings' gender on adults' personality, using data from 85,887 people from 12 large representative surveys covering nine countries (United States, United Kingdom, The Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Australia, Mexico, China, and Indonesia). We investigated the personality traits of risk tolerance, trust, patience, locus of control, and the Big Five. We found no meaningful causal effects of the gender of the next younger sibling and no associations w

Examining clinical characteristics of autism and links with parent perceptions of sibling relationship quality.

Sibling relationship quality is important for the well-being of children on the autism spectrum and their siblings. Little is known, however, about how varied behavior and abilities of children on the autism spectrum may be associated with parent perceptions of domains of sibling relationship quality. We drew data from a subsample of 119 children on the autism spectrum (ages 10-11 years), participating in an ongoing longitudinal study. We looked at how three clinical characteristics (autism symptoms, behavioral difficulties, and communication ability) related to four areas of parent-reported s

Childhood Sexual Abuse: Sibling Perspectives.

Despite a recent focus highlighting the systemic impact of childhood sexual abuse (CSA), the needs of nonabused siblings have been largely overlooked. This interpretative phenomenological analysis study explored the lived experience of nonabused adult siblings of survivors of CSA. Semistructured interviews were undertaken with five adult siblings who were, or had been attending a support service. Emergent themes demonstrated the personal and relational impact of CSA on siblings which were captured across five domains: trying to make sense of it all, struggling to provide support, managing the

Social buffering by siblings in childhood and adolescence.

Although positive sibling relationships are associated with better developmental outcomes for children and adolescents, it is unknown whether siblings may be effective social buffers of physiological stress. In addition, there is little research on whether depressive symptoms may moderate the effectiveness of social buffering. The current study examined (1) whether siblings, compared to strangers, buffered the cortisol response to a social evaluative stressor in children and adolescents, (2) whether depressive symptoms moderated this effect, and (3) whether self-reported sibling relationship q

Short report: Siblings of children with neurodevelopmental disorders, a phenomenological perspective on parental perception.

BACKGROUND: Siblings, typically developing brothers and sisters of children with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD), are at risk for long-term psychosocial difficulties. OBJECTIVE: The present study aims at obtaining an in-depth insight on the lived experience of siblings of children with NDD through their parents' perspective. METHODS: Seven mothers and three fathers who signed up their sibling children (12-15 years) to a peer-support intervention participated in a semi-structured videoconference interview according to the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) qualitative approach.

'Tell me your story' a qualitative analysis of written narratives from individuals affected by sibling sexual abuse and behaviour: The perspective of parents.

BACKGROUND: Sibling sexual behaviour and abuse (SSB/A) is common and has adverse effects not only to the child who is harmed and the child responsible, but the whole family unit is deeply impacted. OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to understand how SSB/A is experienced by parents and what impact SSB/A has on parents. METHOD: A secondary qualitative design was used to examine 22 narrative stories written by parents (primarily mothers) about their experience of SSB/A that were submitted to #SiblingsToo, a Canadian organisation dedicated to raising awareness of SSB/A. Thematic analysis was used to an

Living with sibling' drug use. Bereaved siblings' family stories.

Family members' problematic drug use is challenging for siblings affecting their well-being and their relationships within the family. Research about siblings living with brothers or sisters' problematic drug use and research on bereaved siblings' experiences indicates that life situations and support needs for both minor siblings and adult siblings can easily be overlooked, both in practice and in research. This article contributes to this knowledge gap by examining how siblings provide meaning to their sibling's drug use problem and how they position themselves and other family members accor

Sibling Relationships in Mixed-Status Immigrant Families: A Qualitative Interpretive Meta-Synthesis.

This study examined how legal status differences shape comparison, caregiving, emotional strain, and solidarity among siblings in mixed-status immigrant families. Siblings play a critical role in immigrant family life, yet research has largely focused on parent-child dynamics. In mixed-status households, siblings hold different legal statuses, creating unequal opportunities and responsibilities that shape their relationships. A qualitative interpretive meta-synthesis was conducted on 13 studies of US-connected mixed-status and transnational families, identified through systematic searches of f

Family Support for (Increasingly) Older Adults with Down Syndrome: Factors Affecting Siblings' Involvement.

BACKGROUND: Life expectancy for people with Down syndrome is increasing, but older adults with Down syndrome are at greater risk of developing certain pathologies associated with ageing. When ageing parents can no longer look after their child with Down syndrome, their other children are often expected to shoulder this responsibility. METHOD: We asked 120 adult siblings of a person with Down syndrome to complete a questionnaire on their current and anticipated relationships. RESULTS: Most respondents considered these relationships to be positive, but they expressed concerns about the effects

The role of siblings in adoption outcomes and experiences from adolescence to emerging adulthood.

In many families, siblings play important roles in shaping each other's outcomes and experiences across development. In adoptive families, siblings may affect adoptees' feelings about adoption and birth family contact. Among "target adoptees" (i.e., 1 participating adopted individual within adoptive families) with siblings who may have also been adopted or the biological children of the adoptive parents, we examined how adoption experiences and individual adjustment from adolescence into emerging adulthood were associated with sibling relationship dynamics. We present 3 studies using longitudi

Sibling adjustment to diabetes and educational needs: A literature review.

As cases of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) increase, so do their impact on sibling relationships. This literature review of four databases from 2010 to 2024 discusses findings from five studies and the themes that emerged: education needs and family functioning. Improvements in family-centered care and education are needed for siblings of children with T1DM.

Different phenotypy in three siblings with homocystinuria.

INTRODUCTION: Movement disorders associated with homocystinuria have been reported as rare cases. Their physiopathology has not yet been clarified. METHODS: Three siblings in the same family have been described, all with homocystinuria but possessing phenotypic differences. RESULT: The first case presented oromandibular dyskinesia, spasmodic dysphonia, tremor, bradykinesia, and generalized dystonia along with the classic findings of homocystinuria. The second case had marfanoid features and ophthalmic complications of homocystinuria, and also evidence of mild rigidity of which the patient di

Illuminating the landscape of sibling relationship quality: An evidence and gap map.

This paper used an evidence and gap map (EGM) to advance the scientific understanding of sibling relationship quality among children aged 2 to 18 years by synthesizing literature on 277 empirical studies from 1985 to 2022 to delineate patterns of study design, sampling, and measurement. Most existing research has utilized majority of White, middle-to-upper class, and/or two-caregiver family samples. Nearly 85% (n = 235) of studies used quantitative methods to measure sibling relationship quality across eight domains: conflict, warmth/affection, quality, cohesion, hostility, power/control, posi

Dyadic analysis of siblings' relationship quality, behavioural responses, and pain experiences during experimental pain.

Research on family factors in paediatric pain has primarily focused on parents; the role of siblings has been largely ignored. This study examined whether sibling relationship quality was related to siblings' behaviours during experimental pain, and whether the behaviours of an observing sibling were related to children's pain outcomes. Ninety-two sibling dyads between 8 and 12 years old completed both observational and questionnaire measures of sibling relationship quality. Children took turns completing the cold-pressor task (CPT) in a counterbalanced order with their sibling present. Pain o

Parental Communication and Experiences and Knowledge of Adolescent Siblings of Children with 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome.

22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) is the most common microdeletion in humans. There have been few studies assessing the impact of this condition on the family and no previous studies conducted on unaffected siblings of children with 22q11DS. The goal of this study was to determine the frequency, method, and content of information being communicated by parents to unaffected siblings about the condition and to assess unaffected siblings' knowledge of 22q11DS and perceptions of the impact of the condition on their affected sibling and themselves. Families were recruited from several 22q11DS edu

Experiences during childhood and adolescence among siblings of children with childhood-onset chronic illness.

BACKGROUND: It remains unclear what experiences siblings of children with childhood-onset chronic illnesses have across settings such as home, school, and healthcare. Although these experiences can have long-term psychosocial effects, how they are interpreted in adulthood is not yet well understood. AIM: This study examined the experiences of adult siblings during their school-age and adolescent years, as well as how they interpreted and made sense of those experiences. METHODS: A qualitative descriptive study using criterion-based purposive sampling was conducted with 14 adult siblings recr

The Invisible Connection: A Qualitative Analysis of the Experience of Support-Seeking Siblings of Individuals With Borderline Personality Disorder Traits.

Nearly 80% of children within the U.S. live with a sibling, and siblings exert a unique and typically lifelong influence on one another. Past research supports an influence between psychopathology of one individual and the psychological functioning of their siblings. Recently this relationship has been examined in the context of borderline personality disorder (BPD), with findings suggesting that siblings of individuals with BPD are at heightened risk of developing psychiatric disorders and engaging in maladaptive behaviors. Beyond the influence siblings have on one another, there is growing w
