Developing a bilingual mobile dictionary for Indian Sign Language and gathering users experience with SignDict.

Availability of a sign language dictionary is very important for the literacy of deaf people. But the intricacies involved in the representation of the sign language impede attempts at representing it in a printed format. A video-based solution helps to solve this problem. This article discusses the development of a bilingual mobile sign language dictionary which has features for converting camera-captured text into sign language and translating simple sentences from a spoken language into their corresponding signs. Feedback from 2,900 users spread across India who have installed our mobile ap

Video Remote Sign Language Interpreting and Health Communication for Deaf Patients: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Current interpretation services for Deaf patients who use sign language are often ineffective or unacceptable. In-person interpretation is frequently unavailable, and while video remote interpreting (VRI) remains underused, its scalability may be a solution given interpreter shortages and cost barriers. Existing research focuses on user and interpreter preferences, leaving a critical gap in understanding how interpretation formats affect communication quality. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of VRI in improving communication outcomes between Deaf patients and physicians c

A 3D Camera-Based Approach for Real-Time Hand Configuration Recognition in Italian Sign Language.

Deafness poses significant challenges to effective communication, particularly in contexts where access to sign language interpreters is limited. Hand configuration recognition represents a fundamental component of sign language understanding, as configurations constitute a core cheremic element in many sign languages, including Italian Sign Language (LIS). In this work, we address configuration-level recognition as an independent classification task and propose a machine vision framework based on RGB-D sensing. The proposed approach combines MediaPipe-based hand landmark extraction with norma

The relationship between adverse childhood experiences and substance use among Deaf American Sign Language users.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are strongly associated with increased risk for substance use across the life course, yet limited research has examined this relationship among deaf individuals using culturally and linguistically appropriate instruments. Deaf individuals who use American Sign Language (ASL) as their preferred language experience higher rates of ACEs than the general population and face unique barriers to substance use prevention and treatment services. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the association between ACEs and alcohol and drug use among deaf adults who us

Navigating sign language learning: insights from hearing parents of deaf and hard-of-hearing children.

The importance of hearing parents of deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children learning sign language is well documented. However, parents face many challenges in this learning process. This study investigates the experiences of Dutch hearing parents learning Dutch Sign Language (NGT) or Sign-supported Dutch through semi-structured interviews with 21 parents and 6 NGT teachers. The interviews explored parents' and teachers' perspectives on parental sign language courses, additional learning materials, and the challenges parents face in learning sign language. The findings highlight the value of

Homesign Research, Gesture Studies, and Sign Language Linguistics: The Bigger Picture of Homesign and Homesigners.

Studies of homesigns have shed light on the human capacity for language and on the challenging problem of language acquisition. The study of homesign has evolved from a perspective grounded in gesture studies and child development to include sign language linguistics and the role of homesigns in language emergence at the community level. One overarching finding is that homesigns more closely resemble sign languages used by linguistic communities than they resemble the gestures produced by hearing people along with spoken language. Homesigns may not exhibit all of the linguistic properties of c

How (and why) does iconicity effect lexical access: An electrophysiological study of American sign language.

Prior research has found that iconicity facilitates sign production in picture-naming paradigms and has effects on ERP components. These findings may be explained by two separate hypotheses: (1) a task-specific hypothesis that suggests these effects occur because visual features of the iconic sign form can map onto the visual features of the pictures, and (2) a semantic feature hypothesis that suggests that the retrieval of iconic signs results in greater semantic activation due to the robust representation of sensory-motor semantic features compared to non-iconic signs. To test these two hypo

How sign language expertise can influence the effects of face masks on non-linguistic characteristics.

Face masks occlude parts of the face which hinders social communication and emotion recognition. Since sign language users are known to process facial information not only perceptually but also linguistically, examining face processing in deaf signers may reveal how linguistic aspects add to perceptual information. In general, signers could be born deaf or acquire hearing loss later in life. For this study, we focused on signers who were born deaf. Specifically, we analyzed data from a sample of 59 signers who were born deaf and investigated the impacts of face masks on non-linguistic characte

Reduced neural selectivity for mental states in deaf children with delayed exposure to sign language.

Language provides a rich source of information about other people's thoughts and feelings. Consequently, delayed access to language may influence conceptual development in Theory of Mind (ToM). We use functional magnetic resonance imaging and behavioral tasks to study ToM development in child (n = 33, 4-12 years old) and adult (n = 36) fluent signers of American Sign Language (ASL), and characterize neural ToM responses during ASL and movie-viewing tasks. Participants include deaf children whose first exposure to ASL was delayed up to 7 years (n = 12). Neural responses to ToM stories (specific

W(h)ither the deaf community? Population, genetics, and the future of Australian sign language.

According to enrollments in schools for the deaf and data from the national census and neonatal hearing screening programs, the incidence of severe and profound childhood deafness in Australia is, and has been, less than commonly assumed. Factors implicated include improved medical care, mainstreaming, cochlear implants, and genetic science. Data for the United States, Britain, and other developed countries seem consistent with those for Australia. Declining prevalence and incidence rates have immediate implications for sign-based education, teacher-of-the-deaf training programs, and education

Neural Activity During Mental Rotation in Deaf Signers: The Influence of Long-Term Sign Language Experience.

OBJECTIVES: Mental rotation is the brain's visuospatial understanding of what objects are and where they belong. Previous research indicated that deaf signers showed behavioral enhancement for nonlinguistic visual tasks, including mental rotation. In this study, we investigated the neural difference of mental rotation processing between deaf signers and hearing nonsigners using blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). DESIGN: The participants performed a block-designed experiment, consisting of alternating blocks of comparison and rotation periods, sep

Socioeconomic and Demographic Trends of Cochlear Implant Recipients Who Use Sign Language: A National Database Analysis.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine how the socioeconomic and demographic characteristics of American Sign Language (ASL)-communicating people with cochlear implants differ from those of the broader cochlear implant (CI) recipient population. METHOD: In this cross-sectional study, we identified 39,111 patients receiving CIs between 2015 and 2024 using the Epic Cosmos database. Of those, 1,070 (2.7%) people with cochlear implants indicated ASL as their preferred language. Chi-square, Fisher's exact, and two-sample t tests compared differences between ASL communicators and noncomm

Between bodily action and conventionalized structure: The neural mechanisms of constructed action in sign language comprehension.

Sign languages (SLs) are expressed through different bodily actions, ranging from re-enactment of physical events (constructed action, CA) to sequences of lexical signs with internal structure (plain telling, PT). Despite the prevalence of CA in signed interactions and its significance for SL comprehension, its neural dynamics remain unexplored. We examined the processing of different types of CA (subtle, reduced, and overt) and PT in 35 adult deaf or hearing native signers. The electroencephalographic-based processing of signed sentences with incongruent targets was recorded. Attenuated N300

Toward a Vision-Based Intelligent System: A Stacked Encoded Deep Learning Framework for Sign Language Recognition.

Sign language recognition, an essential interface between the hearing and deaf-mute communities, faces challenges with high false positive rates and computational costs, even with the use of advanced deep learning techniques. Our proposed solution is a stacked encoded model, combining artificial intelligence (AI) with the Internet of Things (IoT), which refines feature extraction and classification to overcome these challenges. We leverage a lightweight backbone model for preliminary feature extraction and use stacked autoencoders to further refine these features. Our approach harnesses the sc

Food Insecurity, Chronic Disease and Quality of Life among Deaf Adults who use American Sign Language.

This study examined the relationships of food insecurity, chronic diseases, and QoL in a U.S. sample of 630 deaf adults (18 to 89 years old; 55% female) who used American Sign Language (ASL). Measures of USDA Food Security Module, self-reported diagnoses of chronic diseases, and QoL were administered in ASL and English. Approximately 22% reported facing food insecurity, with low food security (11%) and very low food security (11.4%). QoL, but not the presence of chronic diseases, was significantly associated with food insecurity. Higher income and absence of depression acted as protective fact

Best practice recommendations for spoken and signed language interpreter-mediated clinical neuropsychological services.

Objective: The increasing linguistic and cultural diversity of the United States population has intensified demand for equitable, patient-centered neuropsychological services. Yet, a persistent shortage of bilingual and multilingual neuropsychologists, across both spoken and signed languages, has resulted in growing reliance on interpreters. Despite this reality, empirically informed and clinically actionable guidance for interpreter‑mediated neuropsychological practice remains limited. This manuscript addresses the urgent need for well‑articulated best practice recommendations tailored to int

Differences in biological motion perception associated with hearing status and age of signed language exposure.

This study investigates how American Sign Language (ASL) fluency and hearing status influence the perception of biological motion, using three point-light display (PLD) tasks. Prior research indicates that early exposure to ASL among deaf signers results in more rapid and effortless recognition of biological motion than hearing nonsigners, potentially due to the expertise in deciphering complex human movements or possibly due to neuroplasticity in deaf brains. However, it remains uncertain whether this advantage stems from signed language proficiency or the experience of being deaf. To explore

Simultaneous perception of a spoken and a signed language: The brain basis of ASL-English code-blends.

Code-blends (simultaneous words and signs) are a unique characteristic of bimodal bilingual communication. Using fMRI, we investigated code-blend comprehension in hearing native ASL-English bilinguals who made a semantic decision (edible?) about signs, audiovisual words, and semantically equivalent code-blends. English and ASL recruited a similar fronto-temporal network with expected modality differences: stronger activation for English in auditory regions of bilateral superior temporal cortex, and stronger activation for ASL in bilateral occipitotemporal visual regions and left parietal corte

Speaking in Alzheimer's Disease, is That an Early Sign? Importance of Changes in Language Abilities in Alzheimer's Disease.

It is known that Alzheimer's disease (AD) influences the temporal characteristics of spontaneous speech. These phonetical changes are present even in mild AD. Based on this, the question arises whether an examination based on language analysis could help the early diagnosis of AD and if so, which language and speech characteristics can identify AD in its early stage. The purpose of this article is to summarize the relation between prodromal and manifest AD and language functions and language domains. Based on our research, we are inclined to claim that AD can be more sensitively detected with
