Turning the Finger into a Writing Tool.

A novel writing platform composed of a wearable sensor on the fingernail and classification algorithms is described. Findings from using this platform to translate fingertip writing into shapes, letters, and numbers on a range of surfaces are reported. The new wearable platform leverages an architecture with miniaturized electronic circuitry to precisely measure a set of forces in the longitudinal and transverse directions using multiple strain gauges. We find that the directional pressure patterns are translated from the fingertip to the fingernail. Deformation of fingernails in the longitudi

An automatic segmentation method for heart sounds.

BACKGROUND: There are two major challenges in automated heart sound analysis: segmentation and classification. An efficient segmentation is capable of providing valuable diagnostic information of patients. In addition, it is crucial for some feature-extraction based classification methods. Therefore, the segmentation of heart sound is of significant value. METHODS: This paper presents an automatic heart sound segmentation method that combines the time-domain analysis, frequency-domain analysis and time-frequency-domain analysis. Employing this method, the boundaries of heart sound components

An Electronic System for the Contactless Reading of ECG Signals.

The aim of this work is the development of a contactless capacitive sensory system for the detection of (Electrocardiographic) ECG-like signals. The acquisition approach is based on a capacitive coupling with the patient body performed by electrodes integrated in a front-end circuit. The proposed system is able to detect changes in the electric charge related to the heart activity. Due to the target signal weakness and to the presence of other undesired signals, suitable amplification stages and analogue filters are required. Simulated results allowed us to evaluate the effectiveness of the ap

Regression-based estimation of ERP waveforms: II. Nonlinear effects, overlap correction, and practical considerations.

A companion paper introduced the rERP framework, which recasts traditional event-related potential (ERP) averaging as a special case of a more flexible regression-based approach to estimating ERP waveforms. Here, we build on this foundation, showing how rERP analysis can also handle the estimation of nonlinear effects (a generalization of both the well-known approach of dichotomizing continuous covariates, and also of the ERP image technique), and can disentangle overlapping ERPs to temporally adjacent stimuli. We then consider how the use of rERPs impacts on other parts of the EEG analysis pi

Complexity-based analysis for the detection of heart murmurs.

While a healthy human heart produce a rhythmic pattern of sounds, some heart disorder induce deviations perceived as abnormal sounds called murmurs. Despite many murmurs can be considered harmless, other constitute the first basis of a heart disorder. In this sense, a correct diagnosis remains essential; however, due to the subjectivity on using human ear to make diagnosis, automatic detection systems appear as useful tools for helping medical specialists on improving diagnosis accuracy. Complexity analysis has become one important tool for the study of physiological signals, because tracking

A low-cost B-mode USB ultrasound probe.

The Universal Serial Bus (USB) is now the ubiquitous interface bus of choice for connecting peripherals to personal computers and laptops. USB 2.0 is a half-duplex bus running at 480 Mb/s and each peripheral can draw as much as 500 mA of current at a nominal 5 V from the USB connector. We have developed a family of USB-based, B-mode probes that connect directly to a personal computer or laptop and that draw as little as 250 mA (1.25 W) when forming ten 5 MHz images/second. The pulser/receiver, high voltage supply, analog-to-digital converter, servo and USB interface are implemented on a small

Concomitant Gradient Effects Across Field Strengths and Gradient Amplitudes: Improved Estimation of Errors and Correction of Concomitant Dephasing and Diffusion Weighting.

PURPOSE: Deleterious effects from concomitant gradients are amplified at lower field strengths and stronger gradients. We aimed to show the signal errors caused by concomitant gradients across a wide range of hardware configurations and propose corrections that can be applied during experimental design and analysis. THEORY AND METHODS: We derived a compact but accurate expression for concomitant gradients and simulated the associated signal bias across field strengths (0.03-7 T) and gradient amplitudes (20-600 mT/m) for asymmetric Maxwell-compensated diffusion encoding gradient waveforms. An accelerated alternating direction method of multiplier for MRI with TV regularisation.

Compressed Sensing (CS) is important in the field of image processing and signal processing, and CS-Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is used to reconstruct image from undersampled k-space data. Total Variation (TV) regularisation is a common technique to improve the sparsity of image, and the Alternating Direction Multiplier Method (ADMM) plays a key role in the variational image processing problem. This paper aims to improve the quality of MRI and shorten the reconstruction time. We consider MRI to solve a linear inverse problem, we convert it into a constrained optimization problem based on

MR imaging of the liver at 1.5 T: value of signal averaging in suppressing motion artifacts.

OBJECTIVE: Prior reports have suggested that signal averaging is not as effective as phase reordering for suppressing motion-related artifacts on T1-weighted spin-echo MR imaging of the liver at high field strengths. We hypothesized that with shorter TEs, signal averaging could be effective, and therefore undertook this study to compare signal averaging with phase reordering at 1.5T. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Thirty consecutive patients underwent MR imaging of the liver at 1.5 T with two T1-weighted spin-echo pulse sequences. In one sequence we used signal averaging and in the other we used phase

Cardiac and respiratory signal separation in electrical impedance tomography (EIT).

Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is a promising non-invasive imaging modality for respiratory and cardiac monitoring. However, separating cardiac signals from the dominant respiratory component remains challenging because both physiological processes are simultaneously embedded in the measured impedance signals. This study investigates the influence of EIT measurement patterns on cardiac-respiratory signal separation using four methods: continuous wavelet transform, empirical mode decomposition, independent component analysis, and principal component analysis (PCA). Numerical simulations

MRI-compatible device for examining brain activation related to stepping.

Repetitive and alternating lower limb movements are a specific component of human gait. Due to technical challenges, the neural mechanisms underlying such movements have not been previously studied with functional magnetic resonance imaging. In this study, we present a novel treadmill device employed to investigate the kinematics and the brain activation patterns involved in alternating and repetitive movements of the lower limbs. Once inside the scanner, 19 healthy subjects were guided by two visual cues and instructed to perform a motor task which involved repetitive and alternating movement

DCSENets: Interpretable deep learning for patient-independent seizure classification using enhanced EEG-based spectrogram visualization.

Neurologists often face challenges in identifying epileptic activities within multichannel EEG recordings, requiring extensive hours of analysis. Computer-aided diagnosis systems have been proposed to reduce manual inspection of EEG signals by neurologists. However, direct analysis of EEG signals is difficult due to their complex and dynamic nature, with variation across multiple patients. Therefore, researchers have proposed the short-time Fourier transform (STFT) to capture dynamic events indicative of seizures through time-varying frequency representation of EEG signals. However, tradeoffs

Research on automatic segmentation method of microseismic monitoring signal under low signal-to-noise ratio conditions.

To address the issues of reduced microseismic signal detection accuracy and difficulty in identifying event boundaries under low signal-to-noise ratio conditions, we propose SEU-Net, an automatic microseismic signal segmentation model that integrates a Squeeze-and-Excitation (SE) attention mechanism. This model embeds an SE module within the U-Net encoder, which enhances feature responses related to microseismic event boundaries through adaptive re-scaling of channel features. Simultaneously, it employs a temporal signal dimension expansion method to convert one-dimensional waveforms into an i

Automatic selection of IMFs to denoise the sEMG signals using EMD.

Surface Electromyography (sEMG) signals are muscle activation signals, which has applications in muscle diagnosis, rehabilitation, prosthetics, and speech etc. However, they are known to be affected by noises such as Power Line Interference (PLI), motion artifacts etc. Currently, Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) and its modifications such as Ensemble EMD (EEMD), and Complementary EEMD (CEEMD) are used to decompose EMG into a series of Intrinsic Mode Functions (IMFs). The denoised EMG can be obtained from the selected IMFs. Statistical methods are used to select the signal dominant IMFs to re

Singular Value Decomposition for Removal of Cardiac Interference from Trunk Electromyogram.

A new algorithm based on singular value decomposition (SVD) to remove cardiac contamination from trunk electromyography (EMG) is proposed. Its performance is compared to currently available algorithms at different signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). The algorithm is applied on individual channels. An experimental calibration curve to adjust the number of SVD components to the SNR (0-20 dB) is proposed. A synthetic dataset is generated by the combination of electrocardiography (ECG) and EMG to establish a ground truth reference for validation. The performance is compared with state-of-the-art algori

An optimized method for tremor detection and temporal tracking through repeated second order moment calculations on the surface EMG signal.

In this study, the problem of detecting and tracking tremor from the surface myoelectric signal is addressed. A method based on the calculation of a Second Order Moment Function (SOMF) inside a window W sliding over the sEMG signal is here presented. An analytical formulation of the detector allows the extraction of the optimal parameters characterizing the algorithm. Performance of the optimized method is assessed on a set of synthetic tremor sEMG signals in terms of sensitivity, precision and accuracy through the use of a properly defined cost function able to explain the overall detector pe

Structure-preserving quality improvement of cone beam CT images using contrastive learning.

Cone-beam CT (CBCT) is widely used in dental clinics but exhibits limitations in assessing soft tissue pathology because of its lack of contrast resolution and low Hounsfield Units (HU) quantification accuracy. We aimed to increase the image quality and HU accuracy of CBCTs while preserving anatomical structures. We generated CT-like images from CBCT images using a patchwise contrastive learning-based GAN model. Our model was trained on unpaired CT and CBCT datasets with the novel combination of losses and the feature extractor pretrained on our training dataset. We evaluated the quality of th
