Feeding spoiled silage with high yeast activity is commonly related to impaired lactation performance by dairy cows. However, rehydrated corn grain silage (RCGS) may be more prone to yeast proliferation and be greatly affected by high yeast populations. This experiment assessed the effects of increasing wild yeast counts on the nutrient composition, fermentation profile, and aerobic stability of RCGS at different storage lengths. Wild yeast was obtained after exposing high-moisture corn to an aerobic environment for 10 d. The experiment consisted of 4 treatments (theoretical concentration of 0

Our objective was to measure the effects of different ratios of alfalfa hay and corn silage on amount and efficiency of milk true protein and fat production in Holstein cows. One hundred and 5 cows (45 primiparous, 60 multiparous), in 2 enrollments, were used in a randomized complete block design study with 1-wk covariate (COV) and 4-wk experimental period. Following the COV period, cows were blocked by parity, milk yield, and DIM and assigned randomly to 1 of 5 diets comprised of 62% forage (DM basis) with the forage consisting of different DM ratios of chopped alfalfa hay and corn silage: 10

Oats (Avena sativa L.) are rich in nutrients and bioactive compounds, serving as a roughage source for ruminants. This study investigated the impact of lactic acid bacteria (LAB), cellulase (M), and their combinations (LM) on the fermentation quality and metabolic compounds of oat silage. Results demonstrated that all additive treatments significantly increased lactic acid content compared to the control group (P < 0.05), with the lactic acid bacteria treatment group exhibiting the lowest pH value (P < 0.05). Analysis of antioxidant activity and metabolites in oat silage over 60 days revealed

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are a new type of pollutant and pose major threats to public health. However, the distribution and transmission risk of ARGs in alfalfa silage as the main forage for ruminants have not been studied. This study first deciphered the effects of Lactobacillus plantarum MTD/1 or Lactobacillus buchneri 40788 inoculations on distribution and transmission mechanism of ARGs in alfalfa silage by metagenomics. Results showed that multidrug and bacitracin resistance genes were the dominant ARGs in ensiled alfalfa. The natural ensiling process increased the abundances of

Six primiparous and 6 multiparous lactating Holstein cows were used in a double d6 x 6 Latin square to determine the effects of the percentage of forage fiber in diets containing concentrates based on barley or corn. Cows received one of six diets that provided three percentages of neutral detergent fiber (NDF) from barley silage [19.5, 25.0, and 40.9% of dry matter intake (DMI)] combined with concentrates based on either barley or corn. The DMI (18.6 vs. 18.3 kg/d) and net energy for lactation (27.2 vs. 26.8 Mcal/d) were similar for cows fed barley and corn diets, respectively. Consequently,

The current experiment studied 2 situations proposed to lead to decreased milk protein yield (MPY). First, the feed evaluation system of the NRC predicts that substitution of soybean meal (SBM) with canola meal (CM) decreases MP supply, thereby negatively affecting MPY. Second, excess RDP supply has a negative effect on post-liver AA supply, and hence, on MPY. These 2 potentially negative situations were tested in 6 multiparous multicatheterized Holstein cows through (1) substitution of SBM with CM in a grass silage-based diet and (2) with an excess RDP supply added to a CM and grass silage-ba

INTRODUCTION: Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) have attracted more attentions in fermented feed recently. However, little information is available on the occurrence and distribution of ARGs in ensiled forages in the alpine region of the Qinghai-Tibetan plateau (QTP) with an extremely harsh environment.
METHODS: The study investigated the distribution and spread mechanism of ARB and ARGs in Elymus nutans silage along 2600 m (low), 3600 m (medium) and 4600 m (high) altitude in the QTP.
RESULTS: The major ARG types in Elymus nutans silage were multidrug

Silage fermentation is a complicated biochemical process involving interactions between microbes and metabolites. However, the overall metabolome feature of ensiled forage and its response to lactic acid bacteria inoculation is poorly understood. Hence, in this study metabolome profiles of whole-plant corn silage inoculated with or without Lactiplantibacillus plantarum were characterised via solid-phase microextraction/gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (SPME-GC-MS), gas chromatography/time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC-TOF-MS), and Liquid chromatography/Q Exactive HFX mass spectrometry (L

The objective of this experiment was to evaluate effects of reducing corn silage particle size on eating behavior, chewing activity, and rumen fermentation in lactating dairy cows. Four cannulated, multiparous cows averaging 110 +/- 4 d in milk and weighing 675 +/- 70 kg were randomly assigned to a 4 x 4 Latin square. During each of four 14-d periods, animals were offered one of four diets that were chemically similar but varied in corn silage particle size: short (SH), mostly short (MSH), mostly long (MLG), and long (LG), with a geometric mean particle length of 7.4, 7.8, 8.3, and 8.8 mm, res

Effects of time of day and dietary monensin in the distribution of size of digesta particles in different digestive tract sites and their intersite relationships were examined in six heifers (290 kg BW) with ruminal, duodenal and ileal cannulas given ad libitum access to corn silage, with or without 100 mg monensin.head-1.d-1, in a two-period crossover design. Ingestive masticate and digesta of corn silage were collected via esophageal, ruminal or intestinal cannulas. The distribution of particulate matter retained on sieves with apertures larger than 20 microm was determined by wet-sieving. T

Three groups of 18 Shorthorn cows were fed, as a sole maintenance diet, grass silage known to produce hypocupremia. Two of these groups were comprised of pregnant cows and the third group of non-pregnant cows. In late Fall, the cows were grouped in inside pens and had free access to a mineral feed. In the mineral feed offered to one of the groups of pregnant cows, 0.25% of sodium chloride was replaced by sequestered copper. The non-supplemented group of pregnant cows showed a decrease in blood plasma copper over wintered and in April, more than half of the animals in this group were hypocuprem

This study evaluated L. casei TH14 (TH14) and two levels of hydrolysable tannin (HT; sweet chestnut, Castanea sativa) as corn ensiling additives, hypothesising that their combination would improve fermentation quality and reduce in vitro CH4. Whole-plant corn was ensiled for 21 days in a completely randomised design (seven treatments, four replicates) combining Molasses, TH14, and HT at 20 or 40 g/kg DM. Silage pH was significantly affected by treatment (p < 0.01), with T4 reaching the lowest final pH (3.83), whereas the primary nutrients (DM, OM, CP, and NDF) were unchanged (p > 0.05). Hydrol

To address the pressing need for improving the silage quality of sweet sorghum, this study aims to establish aPichia anomala-Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) consortium suitable for the sweet sorghum silage system and to elucidate its synergistic mechanism through untargeted metabolomics. The optimal P. anomala-Leuconostoc citreum consortium was obtained through a membership function analysis based on indicators of organic acids and antifungal metabolites. Compared to L. citreum monoculture, the co-culture enhanced L. citreum viable cell count and lactic acid (LA) production by 35.80% and161.34%, re

Although 3-nitrooxypropanol (3-NOP; Bovaer10) has been proven to reduce enteric methane (CH4) by ∼30% in indoor systems of dairying when the additive is mixed throughout TMR and partial mixed ration (PMR) diets, there has been limited research to date on the CH4 abatement potential of 3-NOP when mixed within a diet based on perennial ryegrass silage only and fed to pregnant nonlactating dairy cows. To investigate the effect of 3-NOP supplementation on enteric CH4 emissions of pregnant nonlactating dairy cows, a 6-wk study was undertaken in which treatment cows were supplemented with 3-NOP mixe

Optimizing nitrogen and water management in sustainable silage production is critical for both improving biochemical quality and maintaining plant oxidative balance. This study examined the effects of different nitrogen doses and irrigation levels on the oil content and fatty acid composition, total phenolic content, antioxidant capacity (DPPH and CUPRAC), and antioxidant enzyme activities such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and peroxidase (POD) and oxidative stress activities as malondialdehyde (MDA) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.) silage.
