Hydration and strength development in blended cement with ultrafine granulated copper slag.

This study aims at evaluating the effect of ultrafine granulated copper slag (UGCS) on hydration development of blended cement and mechanical properties of mortars. The UGCS with the median particle size of 4.78 μm and BET surface area of 1.31 m2/g was used as a cement replacement to prepare blended cements. Hydration heat emission of blended cement and mechanical performance of mortars were investigated by using isothermal calorimetry and strength tests, respectively. X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were applied to the analysis

Mineralogical changes of a well cement in various H2S-CO2(-brine) fluids at high pressure and temperature.

The reactivity of a crushed well cement in contact with (1) a brine with dissolved H2S-CO2; (2) a dry H2S-CO2 supercritical phase; (3) a two-phase fluid associating a brine with dissolved H2S-CO2 and a H2S-CO2 supercritical phase was investigated in batch experiments at 500 bar and 120, 200 degrees C. All of the experiments showed that following 15-60 days cement carbonation occurred. The H2S reactivity with cement is limited since it only transformed the ferrites (minor phases) by sulfidation. It appeared that the primary parameter controlling the degree of carbonation (i.e., the rate of calc

Chemical and mechanical properties of wellbore cement altered by CO₂-rich brine using a multianalytical approach.

Defining chemical and mechanical alteration of wellbore cement by CO(2)-rich brines is important for predicting the long-term integrity of wellbores in geologic CO(2) environments. We reacted CO(2)-rich brines along a cement-caprock boundary at 60 °C and pCO(2) = 3 MPa using flow-through experiments. The results show that distinct reaction zones form in response to reactions with the brine over the 8-day experiment. Detailed characterization of the crystalline and amorphous phases, and the solution chemistry show that the zones can be modeled as preferential portlandite dissolution in the depl

Tertiary Dentin Barrier Formation: A Comparison Between the Effects of Two Calcium Silicate Based Materials.

Pulp capping is a vital pulp therapy that aims to prolong the life of a tooth by protecting it after pulp exposure occurred. Pulp capping biomaterials are intended to induce odontoblasts to deposit a natural tertiary dentin barrier to protect the pulp-dentin complex. Two pulp capping agents with calcium silicates in their composition, but with different mechanisms of the setting reaction were tested in vivo with the main objective of comparing their effect on the pulp-dentin complex. The specific aim was to evaluate the preservation of pulp vitality following in vivo direct and indirect pulp c

Enhancing lateritic soil performance with cement and calcined limestone dust for road base application.

Lateritic soils are widely used in road construction in tropical regions, but their natural engineering properties often require stabilization to meet strength and performance requirements. In Thailand, lateritic soils are commonly stabilized with cement-based binders, which are applied as soil-cement subbase and soil-cement base layers in accordance with the Department of Highways (DOH) specifications. This study evaluates the stabilization of lateritic soil using ordinary Portland cement (OPC) with calcined limestone dust (CLD) as a partial cement replacement. CLD is produced by the calcinat

Hydration of Biodentine, Theracal LC, and a prototype tricalcium silicate-based dentin replacement material after pulp capping in entire tooth cultures.

INTRODUCTION: The calcium-releasing ability of pulp-capping materials induces pulp tissue regeneration. Tricalcium silicate-based materials produce calcium hydroxide as a by-product of hydration. Assessment of hydration and calcium ion leaching is usually performed on samples that have been aged in physiological solution for a predetermined period of time. The hydration and activity of the materials in vivo may not be similar to those displayed in vitro because of insufficient fluid available in contact with dentin. The aim of this research was the assessment of hydration of Biodentine, Therac

One chemistry, many pathways: Comparing carbon-negative cement, enhanced weathering, and ocean alkalinity enhancement.

We compare carbon dioxide removal pathways involving carbon-negative cement and carbonate concrete (CNCm and CNCb), enhanced rock weathering (ERW), and ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE). All ultimately rely on alkalinity from enhanced weathering of alkaline silicate rocks, even when calcium and magnesium are extracted from seawater. We assess them using five practical criteria: carbonation efficiency, measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV), location flexibility, process optimization, and co-benefits. Bicarbonate-dominant carbon sequestration, including OAE, offers high carbonation eff

Development of self-adhesive pulp-capping agents containing a novel hydrophilic and highly polymerizable acrylamide monomer.

Several studies have shown the clinical success of hydraulic calcium-silicate cements (hCSCs) for direct and indirect pulp capping and root repair. However, hCSCs have various drawbacks, including long setting time, poor mechanical properties, low bond strength to dentin, and relatively poor handling characteristics. To overcome these limitations, a light-curable, resin-based hCSC (Theracal LC, Bisco) was commercially introduced; however, it did not exhibit much improvement in bond strength. We developed a light-curable self-adhesive pulp-capping material that contains the novel acrylamide mon

Molecular insights into pre-existing crack induced mechanical degradation of CSH gel.

Calcium silicate hydrate (CSH), the primary product formed during cement hydration, serves as the key binding phase and is characterized by a multiscale, heterogeneous, and highly disordered architecture. Within its intrinsic microstructure, detrimental pores and nonuniform cracks progressively aggravate the deterioration of interparticle bonding under service conditions. In this work, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations coupled with uniaxial tensile loading are employed to systematically investigate the intrinsic mechanical response of CSH and the degradation mechanisms associated with Mode I

Characteristics of the cement-solidified municipal solid waste incineration fly ash.

Cement solidification is an important pre-treatment technology for municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash into landfill. The physicochemical properties and leaching characteristics are the foundation for assessing the long-term stability of the fly ash solidified with benchmark cement in landfills. The leaching performances of bulk components (Na, K, Ca, Cl, CO32-, and SO42-) and heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Cr, Pb, and Zn) were analyzed based on the percolation column test and pH dependent test respectively. The research showed that in the cement-solidified fly ash, Na and K were mainly i

Study on mix proportion and mechanism of fine-grained tailing composite anti-seepage material.

Traditional cement-bentonite cutoff materials suffer weak chemical corrosion resistance, and existing tailing-based barriers mostly take tailing as auxiliary filler, lacking multi-component synergistic modification with fine full tailing as primary aggregate. This study prepares a composite anti-seepage material with full fine tailing as main aggregate mixed with Portland cement, sodium bentonite and sodium silicate. Single-factor controlled variable tests with six groups of specimens were carried out to adjust cement and bentonite dosages; permeability tests, quadruple direct shear tests and

Failures and successes of vital pulp therapy in an undergraduate dental clinic.

Vital pulp therapy (VPT) has been the principal treatment option used to preserve pulp function during apical development of immature permanent teeth affected by caries and trauma. Advances in VPT protocols and bioactive materials have made this approach a possible treatment option for mature permanent teeth. This article presents a clinical VPT protocol for mature permanent teeth and compares 2 failed cases and 2 successful cases completed in the general dentistry clinic of a dental school. The objective is to allow general dentists to be more comfortable with providing VPT procedures as a tr

Fabrication of Polyaluminium Ferric Sulfate from Bauxite Residue for Efficient Removal of Cr(VI) from Simulated Wastewater.

Bauxite residue is generated from alumina production in the alumina refining industry by the Bayer process, which requires a large amount of land resource and causes serious environmental problems. In this paper, a novel recycling strategy is proposed to rehabilitate the land and produce the polyaluminium ferric sulfate (PAFS) and siliceous gypsum byproducts from the bauxite residue. The batch experiments reveal that the maximum Cr(VI) removal efficiency of as-prepared PAFS can reach 95.80% with an initial concentration of 10.41 mg/L. In addition, the non-toxic siliceous gypsum should be an id

Micro-observations of different types of nano-Al₂O₃on the hydration of cement paste with sludge ash replacement.

In recent years, sewer systems and wastewater treatment plants have become important in developing countries. Consequently, the amount of sewage sludge produced by these countries has been gradually increasing, and determining how to properly recycle this sludge is becoming an important topic for researchers. In this study, to expand the recyclability of sewage sludge ash (SSA) in engineering applications, two types of nano-aluminium oxides (Al₂O₃), MC2A and MC2R, were added to SSA/cement paste and mortar specimens. The MC2R type (γ phase) had a smaller particle size and larger specific surfac

Machine Learning Potential for Calcium Silicate Hydrates With Broad Compositional and Structural Diversity.

Calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H), the primary hydration product of cement, governs the strength and durability of concrete but remains difficult to model due to its chemical heterogeneity and disordered nanostructure. Machine learning potentials (MLPs) offer a route to extend quantum accuracy to large-scale simulations, yet progress has been limited by the absence of representative datasets. Here, we present a stoichiometry-generalizable MLP, CSH-MLP, trained on a broad and representative dataset containing over 50 000 DFT-labeled configurations, which is derived from nearly 700 distinct C-S-H

Composition control in biphasic silicate microspheres on stimulating new bone regeneration and repair of osteoporotic femoral bone defect.

Application of bioactive materials as synthetic bone graft substitutes in regenerative medicine has seen great evolution over the past decades in treating challengeable bone defects. However, balancing the preparation conditions and biological performances of inorganic biomaterials remain a great challenge, especially when there is lack of biomaterial design on how to control component distribution and how pathological bone responds to the biomaterial stimulations and osteogenesis. Here, our objective is to develop yolk-shell Ca-silicate microspheres and to investigate the potential biological

The fractal characteristics of cement-based materials with grinding aid via BSE image analysis.

Energy conservation and emission reduction are crucial for the cement industry to meet "carbon peak" and "carbon neutrality" targets, with a particular emphasis on grinding aids. The impact of different grinding aids (triethanolamine (TEA), maleic acid-modified trieth-anolamine (MTEA), triisopropanolamine (TIPA), and TEA-CNA composite) on the microstructural evolution of cement-based materials and their relationship with macro-scopic mechanical properties is investigated in this study using backscattered electron (BSE) imaging and fractal theory. The results show that TIPA effectively refines

Ion-releasing restorative materials and dentin remineralization: Current strategies and future perspectives.

Histological studies on carious dentin have identified distinct layers with unique characteristics, leading to the development of minimally invasive restorative strategies. The conservative nature of these approaches has driven the advancement of ion-releasing materials designed to promote dentin remineralization not only by enhancing mineral content but also by restoring the functional properties of the affected tissue. In this context, the remineralizing potential of glass ionomer cements, calcium silicate-based cements, and ion-releasing resin-based composites has been the focus of extensiv
