Osteogenic and anti-osteoporotic effects of risedronate-added calcium phosphate silicate cement.

Osteoporosis greatly impairs bone fracture restoration with bone cement because the accelerated resorption decreases the osseointegration between bone and implants. In this study, we designed a new drug delivery system based on the third generation bisphosphonate risedronate (RA) and the osteogenic calcium phosphate silicate cement (CPSC). The impact of RA on CPSC's material properties and microstructure was evaluated by different characterization methods (μCT, XRD, FTIR, SEM and gas sorption). In addition, in vitro biocompatibility of RA-added CPSC was evaluated (MTT assay, flow cytometry, re

Treatment of benign bone defects in children with silicate-substituted calcium phosphate (SiCaP).

BACKGROUND: In children with benign bone defects, various treatment options are recommended. Whether these defects should be curetted, osteosynthetically stabilized and/or filled with allogenic or synthetic bone material is still a matter of controversy. METHODS: The reported study presents preliminary results of five children with benign bone lesions of the lower extremity. Curettage and filling of the defect with a commercially available silicate-substituted calcium phosphate (SiCaP) (Actifuse® by ApaTech Ltd., Elstree, United Kingdom) was performed. Patients were followed-up in the outpati

Quantitative structure-property relationships of potentially bioactive fluoro phospho-silicate glasses.

In this work, the glass transition temperature and chemical durability of bioactive phospho-silicate glasses were experimentally determined and correlated to the structural descriptor Fnet derived from classical molecular dynamics simulations. The replacement of CaF2 for Na2O in the parent glass 45S5 enhances both chemical durability and density, while the replacement of CaF2 for CaO lowers chemical durability. The proposed descriptor, Fnet, provides satisfactorily correlations with glass transition temperature and chemical durability over a wide range of compositions.

Fractionation and solubility of cadmium in paddy soils amended with porous hydrated calcium silicate.

Previous studies have shown that porous hydrated calcium silicate (PS) is very effective in decreasing cadmium (Cd) content in brown rice. However, it is unclear whether the PS influences cadmium transformation in soil. The present study examined the effect of PS on pH, cadmium transformation and cadmium solubility in Andosol and Alluvial soil, and also compared its effects with CaCO3, acidic porous hydrated calcium silicate (APS) and silica gel. Soil cadmium was operationally fractionationed into exchangeable (Exch), bound to carbonates (Carb), bound to iron and manganese oxides (FeMnO(x)), b

Siliceous non-diatom microorganisms as complementary indicators in forensic investigations of drowning deaths.

The diatom test remains one of the most widely applied laboratory methods in the post-mortem diagnosis of drowning. However, its value may be limited in environments with low diatom abundance or in atypical aquatic settings. We surveyed the forensic relevance of additional siliceous, non-diatom microorganisms (chrysophyte cysts and scales, freshwater sponge spicules, ebridians, and phytoliths) detectable using standard diatom preparation techniques based on our expertise in the fields of paleoecology and marine biology, as well as the experience gained from more than 1500 diatom analyses of su

In vitro tolerability of soluble silicic acid and tetraethyl orthosilicate in ocular epithelial cells.

Biodegradable silica microparticles (SiMPs) are a promising carrier matrix for controlled ocular drug delivery. In tissues, SiMPs degrade into silicic acid (SiA), a soluble inorganic weak acid. This study evaluated the in vitro toxicity and tolerability of SiA and SiMPs' precursor, tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS), in human corneal epithelial cells (HCE-2) and retinal pigment epithelial cells (ARPE-19). Cells were exposed to serial dilutions of SiA and TEOS. Cell viability was assessed after 24, 48, and 72 h using the alamarBlue assay, while membrane integrity was analyzed through LDH release.

Thermal desorption technique to speciate mercury in carbonate, silicate, and organic-rich soils.

Thermal desorption is a well-assessed technique to speciate mercury (Hg) in soils and sediments. However, the effects related to the different matrices are still not properly assessed. In this study, thermal desorption was applied to Hg-free calcite mixed with Hg standard and soils rich in carbonate and silicate minerals, as well as organic matter. Hg0, HgCl2, HgO, α-HgS, β-HgS and organo-mercuric compounds were recognized, pointing out that the soil matrix operates notable differences in terms of breakdown temperatures of the Hg-compounds and suggesting that the mineralogical composition of s

Unusual Surface Coagulation Activation Patterns of Crystalline and Amorphous Silicate-Based Biominerals.

Activation of coagulation cascades, especially FX and prothrombin, prevents blood loss and reduces mortality from hemorrhagic shock. Inorganic salts are efficient but cannot stop bleeding completely in hemorrhagic events, and rebleeding carries a significant mortality risk. The coagulation mechanism of biominerals has been oversimplified in the past two decades, limiting the creation of novel hemostats. Herein, at the interface, the affinity of proteins, the protease activity, fibrinolysis, hydration shell, and dynamic microenvironment are monitored at the protein level. Proteomic analysis rev

Zinc oxide calcium silicate composite attenuates acute tramadol toxicity in mice.

BACKGROUND: Seizures are considered to be the most common symptom encountered in emergency- rushed tramadol-poisoned patients; accounting for 8% of the drug-induced seizure cases. Although, diazepam clears these seizures, the risk of central respiratory depression cannot be overlooked. Henceforth, three adsorbing composites were examined in a tramadol acute intoxication mouse model. METHODS: Calcium Silicate (Wollastonite) either non-doped or wet doped with iron oxide (3%Fe2O3) or zinc oxide (30% ZnO) were prepared. The composites' adsorption capacity for tramadol was determined in vitro. Tra

Sugarcane Bagasse Ash as an Alternative Source of Silicon Dioxide in Sodium Silicate Synthesis.

To reduce the environmental impacts from sodium silicate synthesis, a ceramic method was suggested, with sugarcane bagasse ash (SCBA) as the source of silicon dioxide and sodium carbonate. Although the production of sodium silicate is carried out on a large scale, it should be noted that its process requires temperatures above 1000 °C; it also requires the use of highly corrosive agents such as sodium hydroxide and chlorine gas to neutralize the remaining sodium hydroxide. In the present study, the synthesis temperatures were reduced to 800 °C with a reaction time of 3 h by pressing equimolar
