Molecular detection of Dirofilaria spp. and host blood-meal identification in the Simulium turgaicum complex (Diptera: Simuliidae) in the Aras River Basin, northwestern Iran.

BACKGROUND: Blackflies (Diptera: Simuliidae) are known as effective vectors of human and animal pathogens, worldwide. We have already indicated that some individuals in the Simulium turgaicum complex are annoying pests of humans and livestock in the Aras River Basin, Iran. However, there is no evidence of host preference and their possible vectorial role in the region. This study was conducted to capture the S. turgaicum (s.l.), to identify their host blood-meals, and to examine their potential involvement in the circulation of zoonotic microfilariae in the study areas. METHODS: Adult blackfl

New species records for the blackfly (Diptera-simuliidae) fauna of Argentina with description of adults, pupa and larva of Simulium oyapockense s. l. And S. seriatum.

Two blackfly species Simulium (Cerqueirellum) oyapockense Floch & Abonnenc and S. (Hemicnetha) seriatum Knab are recorded from Argentina, representing the most southern register for both species. S. oyapockense is a species epidemiologically very important, as a vector of onchocerciasis in the Amazonian focus. Both species are described and illustrated and their distribution are reported, in similarity to others like S. roraimense Nunes de Mello and S. ganalesense Vargas et al. in reference to S. oyapockense and S. mexicanum Bellardi similar to S. seriatum are discussed.

Acquired resistance to Onchocerca lienalis infections in Simulium ornatum Meigen and Simulium lineatum Meigen following passive transfer of haemolymph from previously infected simuliids (Diptera, Simuliidae).

This study describes experiments which demonstrate the presence of a parasite-induced or derived factor in the haemocoel of Onchocerca lienalis-infected simuliids. Haemolymph, when transferred from previously infected donor flies to previously untreated recipient flies, using fine glass needles, confers protection against a subsequent challenge to the recipients. In three trials using Simulium ornatum sl. or S. lineatum, significant levels of protection in 'immunized' compared to 'challenge control' groups were achieved (84% and 81% with S. ornatum sl. and 85% with S. lineatum). This is despit

Sexual Mosaicism and Teratogenesis in Simulium guianense s.l. and S. incrustatum s.l. (Diptera: Simuliidae), Onchocerciasis vectors, from Environmentally Impacted Areas in the Yanomami Indigenous Land, Brazil.

Sexual mosaics in Simuliidae members have been detected at low frequencies in various locations worldwide. These phenotypic expressions are expected in very small amounts in any natural insect population and may result from inherent individual formation factors, such as hormonal or external elements, i.e., environmental pollution and parasitism, both of which can disrupt sexual differentiation development processes. This study assessed a Simuliidae collection sampled as a result of the Brazilian focus on endemic onchocerciasis in the Yanomami Indigenous Land in 2013, 2014, 2017, and 2021. Some

Simuliid vectors of onchocerciasis in Guatemala.

Simulium ochraceum, S. metallicum and S. callidum are the three species of Simuliidae which are known to transmit onchocerciasis in Guatemala. Of these, S. ochraceum is often the most prevalent and displays the highest degree of anthropophily. Other potential vectors exist, but have never been found to harbour developing forms of Onchocerca. The average flight range of these insects was found to be about 7.5 miles, although they may be transported greater distances while feeding on horses. The Simuliidae are most prevalent in December, after which their density decreases, reaching its lowest lev

Revision of the Simulium (Simulium) multistriatum species-group (Diptera: Simuliidae) in Sumatra, Indonesia: Descriptions of three new species and a redescription of the male and pupa of S. (S.) fenestratum Edwards.

Adults and pupae of black flies assigned to the Simulium (Simulium) multistriatum species-group collected from Sumatra, Indonesia in 1992 and 1994 were reexamined. As a result, three undescribed species were found besides S. (S.) fenestratum Edwards, the only species in this species-group so far described from Sumatra. These undescribed species are described as new: S. (S.) mutaralamense sp. nov., which is characterized in the female by the haired basal portion of the radial vein, in the male by the number of upper-eye (large) facets in 18 or 19 vertical columns and 19 or 20 horizontal rows an

[Methods for population sampling of the immature stages of Simulium damnosum Theobald, 1903 (Diptera, Simuliidae) in West Africa. I. Preliminary observations on the vertical distribution of larvae and pupae (author's transl)].

Three techniques for sampling larvae of Simulium damnosum in different water depths are described. Preliminary results prove that the larvae can settle much deeper, i.e. up to 3 m, than reported before (0-30 cm). Without impairment pupation takes place in any depth.

Determination of sample sizes for the estimation of Onchocerca volvulus (Filarioidea: Onchocercidae) infection rates in biting populations of Simulium ochraceum s.l. (Diptera: Simuliidae) and its application to ivermectin control programs.

Monthly samples of biting Simulium ochraceum s.l. Walker were collected before and after ivermectin treatment in southern Mexico and analyzed for Onchocerca volvulus Leuckart infection rates, infection intensity, and the characteristics of larval distribution among parous flies. The variance over mean ratio (VMR) indicated that in all cases this distribution departed from Poisson and was strongly aggregated (VMR > 1). The negative binomial was found to be an adequate model with a small value of the aggregation parameter k, but the degree of larval overdispersion increased as the mean larval lo

Altitudinal patterns of Diptera richness and density in streams: a scientometric approach.

Environmental changes along altitudinal gradients strongly influence the distribution of aquatic insects. We conducted a scientometric review to assess the impact of altitude on Diptera communities, with a particular focus on Chironomidae and Simuliidae. Articles published until 2025 were retrieved from Scopus, Web of Science, and SciELO using multilingual (English, Spanish, and Portuguese) search strings combining insect groups (Diptera, Chironomidae, or Simuliidae), altitudinal terms (altitude or elevation), and freshwater habitat descriptors (river, stream, lotic, or freshwater). Blackfly vectors of zoonotic onchocerciasis in Japan.

Studies of blackfly vectors of Onchocerca dewittei japonica Uni, Bain & Takaoka (Spirurida: Onchocercidae), a parasite of wild boar implicated in the aetiology of zoonotic onchocerciasis in Japan, and six other zoonotic Onchocerca species of this country are reviewed. Molecular identification of infective larvae found in wild-caught female blackflies showed that Simulium bidentatum (Shiraki) (Diptera: Simuliidae) is a natural vector of O. dewittei japonica, and also Onchocerca sp. sensu Fukuda et al., another parasite of wild boar. Inoculation experiments demonstrated that Simulium arakawae Ma

Roger Ward Crosskey-The Life and Contributions of an Entomologist par Excellence (1930-2017).

The life of Roger Ward Crosskey stands as a paragon of scholarly dedication to the profession of entomology. His early interests in natural history prepared him for a diverse entomological career of about 65 years. He began as a medical entomologist working on the onchocerciasis problem with the Colonial Service in Northern Nigeria, and officially transitioned to dipterology, first studying the Tachinidae as a taxonomist with the Commonwealth Institute of Entomology, and later the Simuliidae as a Senior Principal Scientific Officer (Merit) with The Natural History Museum in London. Comparison of black fly species (Diptera: Simuliidae) on an Amerindian reservation with a high prevalence of fogo selvagem to neighboring disease-free sites in the State of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. The Cooperative Group on Fogo Selvagem Research.

Fogo selvagem is an autoimmune blistering skin disease that principally occurs among rural Brazilians living in geographically clumped disease foci. Exposure to hematophagous black flies possibly is related to the cause of the disease. We compared the occurrence, proportions, and richness of simuliid species immatures and the biting activity of adult females within a recently discovered, high prevalence focus of fogo selvagem, the Limão Verde Terena Reservation, to that of neighboring regions with no reported cases of fogo selvagem. Nine black fly species were collected from 12 stream sites du

Molecular circumscription of the blackfly Simulium oyapockense from South America.

Problems related to the identity of Simuliidae species are impediments to effective disease control in Amazonia. Some of these species, such as Simulium oyapockense Floch & Abonnenc, 1946 (Diptera: Simuliidae), are vectors of the organisms that cause onchocerciasis and mansonellosis diseases. This blackfly species has a wide distribution in South America, and it is suspected of being a complex of cryptic species. The aim of this study is to characterize the nominal species S. oyapockense using partial COI gene sequences. Seven populations of S. oyapockense (morphologically identified) were ana

Chromosome-Level Genome of Simulium vittatum Links Black Fly Cytogenetics to Genome Organization and Evolution.

Black flies (Diptera: Simuliidae) are important vectors of pathogens affecting human and animal health, yet the absence of a chromosome-level nuclear reference genome has constrained molecular and evolutionary studies of the family. Here, we present the first chromosome-level nuclear genome and a developmental transcriptomic resource for the long-established IS-7 laboratory lineage of Simulium vittatum . Combining Oxford Nanopore long-read sequencing with Hi-C scaffolding, we assembled a 340.4-Mb genome, with 99.1% of the assembly resolved into three chromosome-length scaffolds (N50=104.8 Mb,

Methods of water-flow measurement applicable to Simulium control.

For the effective control of the Simuliidae-and for a variety of other public health activities-it is important to determine with reasonable accuracy the rate and volume of flow of the rivers and streams which they infest. The field worker requires for this purpose an instrument that is at once cheap and easy to handle. The author of this paper reviews a number of means and instruments available for water-flow measurement and devotes special attention to the Pitot tube, which is well suited to the conditions encountered in Simulium control schemes.

Phylogenetically distinct Wolbachia gene and pseudogene sequences obtained from the African onchocerciasis vector Simulium squamosum.

Wolbachia are intracellular bacteria mostly found in a diverse range of arthropods and filarial nematodes. They have been classified into seven distinct 'supergroups' and other lineages on the basis of molecular phylogenetics. The arthropod-infecting Wolbachia are usually regarded as reproductive parasites because they manipulate their host species' sexing system to enhance their own spread, and this has led to their investigation as potential agents of genetic control in medical entomology. We report 12 partial Wolbachia gene sequences from: aspC, aspS, dnaA, fbpA, ftsZ, GroEL, hcpA, IDA, rpo

Evaluation of 4 adult trap types including the newly developed VectorCube for surveillance of multiple vector groups.

Comprehensive risk assessment for vector-borne disease requires effective monitoring of various vector groups. However, this depends on the traps' ability to capture multiple vector families. This study compares 3 commercially available traps, BG-Sentinel 2, BG-Trap Station as a combination of a BG-Pro and Gravid trap, and the Encephalitis Virus Surveillance trap, with the VectorCube, a newly developed prototype. Multiple openings enable multidirectional vector capture, and color cues can be easily attached and changed. All traps were tested under a uniform, carbon dioxide flow rate at 10 samp
