Conducting filial therapy with homeless parents.

Homelessness and the associated feelings of loss are highly distressing for parents and their children who experience them. The implications for young, homeless children are clinically significant, as these children tend to display higher rates of depressive, anxious feelings. The literature suggests that parents are especially challenged during a period of homelessness, as they cannot provide for their children financially or emotionally. Evidence-based mental health interventions, such as filial therapy, may assist the parent-child relationship by promoting healing during a highly distressin

Characteristics of Births Conceived Through Medically Assisted Reproduction by Parental Structure in Louisiana (2016-2023).

Objective: To examine the risk of pregnancy complications and adverse delivery outcomes among births conceived using medically assisted reproduction (MAR) in same-sex, different-sex, and single-parent households. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional population-based analysis of all MAR births in Louisiana from 2016 to 2023. Based on the sex of both parents listed on the child's birth certificate, we classified births as occurring in different-sex (reference category), same-sex, and single-parent households. We used modified Poisson regression with robust standard errors to estimate adjusted

Pathways linking parental divorce with adolescent depression.

This article examines the intervening pathways linking parental divorce with adolescent depression, using both cross-sectional and prospective data from a study of high school students in the Boston metropolitan area. Overall, findings reveal that parental divorce is linked with adolescent depression in two ways: (1) it is a source of numerous secondary problems and stresses that are causally related to depression, and (2) it alters youths' reactivity to these stresses, in some cases enhancing, but in other cases mitigating, their depressive effects. Analyses demonstrated the central role of e

Is a large family a protective factor against behavioural and emotional problems at the age of 8 years?

AIM: To study the prevalence of behavioural and emotional problems among children from different family types, sibship size and birth order. METHODS: A prospective birth cohort (n = 9357) study where parents filled in two questionnaires and teachers assessed children's behaviour using the Rutter scale (RB2). RESULTS: 14.3% scored above the cut-off point (RB2 > or = 9) indicating probable psychiatric disturbance, boys more often than girls (OR 2.6, 95% CI 2.3-3.0). Behavioural problems (9.2%) were more common than emotional ones (4.1%). Boys living in families other than two-parent families w

Parent-child interactions in pediatric bipolar disorder.

Parent-child relationships may have a significant effect on illness characteristics of children with pediatric bipolar disorder (PBD), and these relationships may, in turn, be affected by the child's illness. We characterized maternal reports of parent-child relationships using the five-factor Parent-Child Relationship Questionnaire (PCRQ) in 60 families (30 PBD youth and 30 matched controls). Data on child proband and parental psychopathology were also obtained. Compared to controls, parent-child relationships in the PBD group were characterized by significantly less warmth, affection, and in

Being a solo mother without the involvement of a partner: an exploration of parenting experiences and support needs.

An increasingly common family type, often referred to as 'solo mothers', 'single mothers by choice' or 'choice mothers', comprises women who intentionally become mothers without the involvement of a partner. Although solo mothers are often described as self-determined, motivated and well prepared for parenting, with both economic and social resources, little is known about their parenting experiences and emotional and practical support needs. This cross-sectional exploratory study used an online survey to examine sources of emotional and practical parenting support, ease of asking for help and

[Is the school entrance examination a door opener for health sciences research? : Analyzing study participation of hard-to-reach groups].

BACKGROUND: Additional scientific surveys within the compulsory school entrance examination (SEE) have become increasingly popular, partly because the SEE potentially reaches all socioeconomic groups. However, it has not been sufficiently explored whether selective participation in voluntary supplementary surveys actually results in no selection bias along socioeconomic characteristics. Therefore, the aim of this study is to analyze the participation of potentially hard-to-reach families in a parent survey at the SEE. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The parent survey on the utilization of community pr

Effect of Financial Education and Coaching on Economic Stability in Low Income, Single Mother Families.

Up to 85% of health is governed by social determinants such as economic stability. By supporting healthy financial behavior changes to increase economic stability, the Financial Success Program (FSP) is a modality that also addresses the limitations of other health interventions in single mother, low-income households. The novel FSP financial education/coaching intervention has previously been shown to reduce financial strain and perceived effects of financial strain on health, improve relationships, reduce smoking and increase healthcare access. This manuscript reports the financial and econo

Targeting Parental Risk Factors for Children's Anxiety: A Factorial Randomized Trial with Three Intervention Components.

OBJECTIVE: Parent-focused interventions have the potential to reduce parental risk factors for children's anxiety. We tested three theoretically distinct intervention components, targeting distinct parental risk factors, to improve understanding of the role of these factors in children's anxiety, and to guide intervention program development. METHOD: We used a 12-week factorial experiment with random allocation to any possible combination and order of three single-session online components: (1) reducing family accommodation, (2) increasing parental empathetic responses, and (3) cognitive rest

Self-regulation as a mediator between sibling relationship quality and early adolescents' positive and negative outcomes.

The current study examined the role of adolescents' self-regulation as a mediator between sibling relationship quality and adolescent outcomes, after controlling for the quality of the parent-child relationship. Participants were 395 families (282 two parent; 113 single parent) with an adolescent child (M age of child at Time 1 = 11.15, SD = .96, 49% female) who took part in [project name masked for blind review] at both Time 1 and Time 2. Path analysis via structural equation modeling suggested that sibling affection was longitudinally and positively related to self-regulation and prosocial b

The influence of parental education on child mental health in Spain.

PURPOSE: To analyze the association between parental education and offspring's mental health in a nationally representative Spanish sample, and assess the contribution of other socioeconomic factors to the association. METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of data on 4- to 15-year-olds participating in the 2006 Spanish National Health Survey. Mental health was assessed using the parent-reported Strengths & Difficulties Questionnaire. Parents' respective educational levels were summarized in a single variable. Univariate and multivariate analyses, controlling for family-, child- and paren

Aspects of Area Deprivation Index in Relation to Hippocampal Volume Among Children.

IMPORTANCE: Area deprivation index (ADI) has been shown to be associated with reduced hippocampal volume (HV) among youths. The social environment may interact with the association between ADI and HV. OBJECTIVE: To investigate which aspects of ADI are uniquely associated with bilateral HV and whether school and family environments have moderating interactions in associations between ADI and HV. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study used data from the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development (ABCD) study. Participants aged 9 and 10 years were recruited from 21 sites

Psychological Distress and Self-Rated Health Among Single Fathers and Mothers During the COVID-19 Pandemic in Japan.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated health burdens, particularly for vulnerable populations. Single parents face unique preexisting challenges, and their health during the pandemic remains insufficiently investigated. We aimed to compare psychological distress and self-rated health (SRH) between single and partnered parents during the pandemic, considering the influence of socioeconomic factors. METHODS: We analyzed the data of 16,028 parents aged 18-50 years with children aged 14 years or younger from the Japan COVID-19 and Society Internet Survey (JACSIS) 2020-2022. Psychological

Parenting and homelessness: overview and introduction to the Special Section.

This overview of parenting and homelessness includes the characteristics and needs of families who are homeless, with a focus on the unique challenges faced by mothers, fathers, and children. In addition, the authors discuss how homeless families are narrowly defined based on the family members who present at shelters and other service programs. In order to fully support parents and their children as they exit homelessness, homeless service programs should consider the broader context of the nontraditional family system and support networks. The overview also includes common challenges to pare

Parent verbal interactions and speech rate: a case study in stuttering.

This single-case study of indirect stuttering treatment is intended to identify variables for further research. The study used post hoc analyses of changes in parent speech variables and changes in the child's stuttering. The analysis was conducted in two parts. Study I examined the relationships between the child's percent syllables stuttered and the parents' speech rates and percentages of nonaccepting statements, interruptions, questions, nonaccepting questions, and talk time. The only parent variable significantly correlated with the child's stuttering was the mother's speech rate. In Stud

Mothers beyond tradition: legal and psychosocial dimensions of single motherhood through assisted reproduction in Kosovo and the Western Balkans.

This article explores the status of single women's rights to access in vitro fertilization (IVF) in the Western Balkans, with a particular focus on Kosovo. Despite adopting a constitutional framework aligned with the highest standards of Western democracies, Kosovo has for years failed to regulate this issue. In a predominantly Muslim and socially conservative society, resistance to recognizing such rights is often justified on the grounds that children cannot be properly raised without a father figure and that restrictions on access to genetic origins risk undermining the healthy development

Developmental change and consistency in parental interactions with school-age children who have mental retardation.

Developmental changes and within-family consistency in parent-child interactions were examined for mothers and fathers of school-age children (6 to 18 years) with mental retardation. At Time 1 and 18 to 24 months later, 98 families (29 single, 69 two-parent) with a child who had mild or moderate mental retardation completed semi-structured interaction sessions in their homes. As expected, both positive and negative exchanges decreased longitudinally, and cross-sectional comparisons revealed fewer parent commands, less child noncompliance, fewer child negatives, and less parent positive recipro
