Complications occur in 3% of the cases of frontal sinusitis. These are mainly oculo-orbital, intracranial and osteomyelitis. Our aim is to describe the contribution of different imaging modalities in the diagnosis of these complications and their post-treatment monitoring. within a 15 years period (2000-2014), 10 patients with complicated frontal sinusitis were included into this retrospective study. 10 patients (9 males) aged 9 to 70 year old (mean 28). Two of these patients (20%) had a history of craniofacial trauma. Frontal headache was present in all cases (100%), frontal swelling in 8 cas

Approximately 0.5-2% of upper viral infections are com-licated by secondary acute bacterial sinusitis and may in rare cases evolve into more serious complications such as meningitis and intracranial abscess. Symptoms are often subtle and nonspecific as fever, headache, scalp tenderness, nausea and altered mental status. In this case report of a 12-year-old boy with an epidural abscess secondary to sinusitis we intend to increase the knowledge to these rare, but potentially life-threatening complications to ensure the optimal and timely treatment.

Tubercular infection of the nasal cavity is an infrequently encountered condition. More so, after the discovery of relevant antibiotics, nasal sinus tuberculosis is not commonly seen. Few cases have reported tuberculosis of the paranasal sinuses, nasopharynx and larynx. With the increasing incidence of HIV, these rare forms of infection have started re-emerging. We present a case of a middle aged man presenting with nasal cavity lesion along with pulmonary tuberculosis, which came to light only after the diagnosis of maxillary sinus tuberculosis.

On the basis of strong research evidence, the pathogenesis of sinusitis involves 3 key factors: sinusostia obstruction, ciliary dysfunction, and thickening of sinus secretions. On the basis of studies of the microbiology of otitis media, H influenzae is playing an increasingly important role in the etiology of sinusitis, exceeding that of S pneumoniae in some areas, and b-lactamase production by H influenzae is increasing in respiratory isolates in the United States. On the basis of some research evidence and consensus, the presentation of acute bacterial sinusitis conforms to 1 of 3 predicable

BACKGROUND: Larvae of the sheep botfly (Oestrus ovis) normally have sheep or goats as host. In humans the larvae can survive for a short time in the nose or under the eyelids, after which they die or are sneezed out.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We describe a 47-year-old woman who during a stay in the Cape Verde Islands developed symptoms of sneezing, a swollen face and an itchy feeling in her nose. These symptoms were due to an infestation of three fully-developed larvae of the O. ovis species in her sinus maxillaries which were later evacuated by endoscopy.
CONCLUSION: In exceptional cases larvae of

The chronic rhinosinusitis is defined as chronic inflammation of the nose and nasal sinuses, with or without nasal polyps. Patients suffering from chronic rhinosinusitis report about nasal obstruction and secretion, olfactory impairment, head and facial pain. These symptoms cause also considerable impact on quality of life. Therefore, an adequate rhinological diagnostics as well as therapies are essential. This paper reviews the pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic therapy of chronic rhinosinusitis. First choice of therapy should be topical glucocorticoids. The application of glucocorticoids ca

Reduction malarplasty for making an oval facial shape is a popular procedure in Asia. However, a range of complications after malarplasty have been reported, including hematoma, orbital complications, asymmetric face, and depression of the chin. Fixation can be incomplete and the osteotome can penetrate the sinus during surgery due to the narrow surgical field, which can result in sinusitis caused by bony fragments after malarplasty. However, there are no reports of sinusitis caused by bony fragments after malarplasty. The authors report 2 cases of chronic sinusitis caused by displaced bony fr

Odontogenic etiology accounts for 10% to 12% of cases of maxillary sinusitis. Although uncommon, direct spread of dental infections into the maxillary sinus is possible due to the close relationship of the maxillary posterior teeth to the maxillary sinus. If a periapical dental infection or dental/oral surgery procedure violates the schneiderian membrane integrity, infection will likely spread into the sinus, leading to sinusitis. An odontogenic source should be considered in individuals with symptoms of maxillary sinusitis and a history of dental or jaw pain; dental infection; oral, periodont

BACKGROUND: Common Variable Immunodeficiency (CVID) is the commonest form of severe antibody deficiency. It is characterized by reduced levels of IgG (<400 mg/dL) and low IgA and/or IgM levels, recurrent bacterial infections, impaired antibody responses despite the presence of B Cells and normal or near normal T immunity in 60% of patients. There is a high mortality from infections without treatment. The main stay treatment is to replace the immunoglobulins.
CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a British soldier with a 10 year history of recurrent chest infections, sinusitis and otitis media. He re

Invasive fungal sinusitis should be suspected in immunocompromised or diabetic patients who present with acute sinusitis, inflammation of nasal septal mucosa, unexplained fever or cough, or the orbital apex syndrome. Histopathological studies are required to differentiate among these syndromes. Acute (fulminant) invasive fungal sinusitis has been called mucormycosis, zygomycosis and fulminant invasive sinusitis. Fever, cough, crusting of nasal mucosa, epistaxis, and headache are the most common presenting symptoms. Histopathological studies show hyphal invasion of blood vessels, vasculitis wit

BACKGROUND: Expert opinions vary on the appropriate role of antibiotics for sinusitis, one of the most commonly diagnosed conditions among adults in ambulatory care.
OBJECTIVES: We examined whether antibiotics are effective in treating acute sinusitis, and if so, which antibiotic classes are the most effective.
SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) (The Cochrane Library, 2007, Issue 3); MEDLINE (1950 to May 2007) and EMBASE (1974 to June 2007).
SELECTION CRITERIA: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing antibiotics with placebo or an

In patients with chronic and recurrent sinusitis, laryngopharyngeal reflux disease may play a significant role. Laryngopharyngeal reflux disease differs from gastroesophageal reflux disease in the extent of reflux (into the hypopharynx and above) as well as timing (occurring more often when the patient is upright). Most patients are unaware of the extent of their symptoms, and diagnostic tools such as pH probe, multichannel intraluminal impedance, and manometry are required for adequate diagnosis. Although therapy with lifestyle modification and acid-suppressive agents may improve reflux in th

OBJECTIVE: This guideline provides evidence-based recommendations on managing sinusitis, defined as symptomatic inflammation of the paranasal sinuses. Sinusitis affects 1 in 7 adults in the United States, resulting in about 31 million individuals diagnosed each year. Since sinusitis almost always involves the nasal cavity, the term rhinosinusitis is preferred. The guideline target patient is aged 18 years or older with uncomplicated rhinosinusitis, evaluated in any setting in which an adult with rhinosinusitis would be identified, monitored, or managed. This guideline is intended for all clini

BACKGROUND: In chronic nonallergic sinusitis, it is often assumed that bacteria invade the sinus mucosa where the inflammatory condition begins and is maintained. However, the bacterial presence in a normal or moderately damaged epithelial layer has never been proved in biopsy studies.
METHODS: In this study, mucosal samples from six consecutive patients with chronic sinusitis were examined. Transmission electron microscopy was used and the presence of bacterial invasion and formation of phagosomes containing bacteria as a marker of host response were studied.
RESULTS: Phagocytosis of bacter

BACKGROUND: Patients with chronic hyperplastic sinusitis (CHS) form a heterogeneous group with similar symptoms and similar treatment despite of possible different mechanisms behind the disease. In the present study we focused on the microbiological findings in CHS and compared these results to the patient history in order to find out a possible explanation for the aetiology and chronicity of CHS.
METHODS: In 30 patients the sinus mucus was collected under endoscopic sinus surgery. Samples from 20 healthy volunteers were collected by nasal lavage. Eosinophil staining, bacterial culturing and
