A hydrodynamic antenna: novel lateral line system in the tail of myliobatid stingrays.

Eagle rays, cownose rays and manta rays (order Myliobatiformes) have a slender tail that can be longer than the animal's body length, but its function and structure are unknown. Using histology, immunohistochemistry and three-dimensional imaging with micro-computed tomography scans, we describe the anatomy and function of the tail in Rhinoptera bonasus, the cownose ray. The tail is an extension of the vertebral column with unique morphological specializations. Along the tail behind the barb, vertebral centra are absent and neural and haemal arches fuse to form a solid mineralized structure tha

Sex steroid hormones and the associated morphological changes in the reproductive tract of free-living males of the cururu stingray Potamotrygon wallacei.

This study analyzed sex steroid hormones and morphology of the reproductive tract in free-living adult males of the cururu stingray (Potamotrygon wallacei). These stingrays were captured during the transition between drought and rising waters in the middle Rio Negro basin, which coincides with the reproductive period (spermatogenesis and copulation) of this endemic species. Levels of the plasma steroid hormones testosterone (T), 17 β-estradiol (E2), and progesterone (P4), the gonadosomatic and hepatosomatic indices, as well as histological characteristics of the testis and epididymis were eval

Ultrastructural observations of the attachment organs of the monogenean Rajonchocotyle emarginata (Olsson, 1876) (Polyopisthocotylea: Hexabothriidae), a gill parasite of rays.

The present study uses scanning and transmission electron microscopical observations to examine the haptoral features of the hexabothriid polyopisthocotylean monogenean Rajonchocotyle emarginata from the gills of the elasmobranch Amblyraja radiata. The haptor possesses six equal, pedunculate suckers, each armed with a large, curved, hooked sclerite, and an appendix bearing two small, terminal suckers and a pair of minute hamuli. The outer side of the distal region of the hooked sclerite forms a large bulge along the antero-lateral side of each sucker and the proximal region forms a small bulge

Comparisons of dental morphology in river stingrays (Chondrichthyes: Potamotrygonidae) with new fossils from the middle Eocene of Peruvian Amazonia rekindle debate on their evolution.

Endemic South American river stingrays (Potamotrygonidae), which include the most diversified living freshwater chondrichthyans, were conspicuously absent from pre-Neogene deposits in South America despite the fact that recent phylogenetic analyses strongly suggest an older origination for this clade. To date, the rare representatives of this family were mostly represented by ambiguous isolated remains. Here, we report 67 isolated fossil teeth of a new obligate freshwater dasyatoid (Potamotrygon ucayalensis nov. sp) from the fossiliferous level CTA-27 (Yahuarango Formation), near Contamana, in

Poisoning, envenomation, and trauma from marine creatures.

In the course of their clinical work or during leisure activity, family physicians occasionally may encounter patients with injuries from marine creatures. Poisoning, envenomation, and direct trauma are all possible in the marine environment. Ciguatera poisoning can result from ingestion of predatory fish that have accumulated biotoxins. Symptoms can be gastrointestinal or neurologic, or mixed. Management is mostly symptomatic. Scombroid poisoning results from ingestion of fish in which histamine-like substances have developed because of improper refrigeration. Gastrointestinal and systemic sy

The absence of a photopic influence on the refractive development of the embryonic eye of the clearnose skate (Raja eglanteria).

The clearnose skate (Raja eglanteria) develops in an almost opaque eggcase and lays its eggs in pairs. One sibling from each of eight pairs of skates was removed from its eggcase during embryonic development, while the other sibling developed inside the eggcase. The refractive development of the eyes at hatching was examined to see if ambient light exposure during embryonic development could influence the refractive states of hatchlings. Measurements included refractive states, ocular dimensions and lens focal properties. The differences in measurements between the two groups were not signific

Diving deep into fish bornaviruses: Uncovering hidden diversity and transcriptional strategies through comprehensive data mining.

Recently, we discovered two novel orthobornaviruses in colubrid and viperid snakes using an in silico data-mining approach. Here, we present the results of a screening of more than 100,000 nucleic acid sequence datasets of fish samples from the Sequence Read Archive (SRA) for potential bornaviral sequences. We discovered the potentially complete genomes of seven bornavirids in datasets from osteichthyans and chondrichthyans. Four of these are likely to represent novel species within the genus Cultervirus, and we propose that one genome represents a novel genus within the family of Bornaviridae

Widespread Natural Occurrence of Hydroxyurea in Animals.

Here we report the widespread natural occurrence of a known antibiotic and antineoplastic compound, hydroxyurea in animals from many taxonomic groups. Hydroxyurea occurs in all the organisms we have examined including invertebrates (molluscs and crustaceans), fishes from several major groups, amphibians and mammals. The species with highest concentrations was an elasmobranch (sharks, skates and rays), the little skate Leucoraja erinacea with levels up to 250 μM, high enough to have antiviral, antimicrobial and antineoplastic effects based on in vitro studies. Embryos of L. erinacea showed incr

Phylogenetic position of Acanthobothrium cleofanus (Cestoda: Onchoproteocephalidea) using molecular evidence.

Despite the large number of species described to date for the onchoprotepcephalid genus Acanthobothrium (207), only 16 named species have a genetic sequence. With this background, specimens of adult cestodes of the stingray Hypanus longus were collected off San Blas, Nayarit, and onchoproteocephalid larvae in the carangid fish Trachinotus rhodopus from Puerto Ángel, Oaxaca, both located on the Pacific coast of Mexico. The objective of this work is to investigate the phylogenetic position of these adults and larvae using nuclear ribosomal markers (18S rDNA and 28S rDNA). Morphologically, adult

Progesterone receptors in extratesticular ducts of the Amazonian stingray Potamotrygon wallacei: A potential role in sperm maturation and aggregate formation.

In cururu stingray (Potamotrygon wallacei Carvalho, Rosa and Araújo 2016) males, plasma progesterone (P4) levels appear to be associated with spermiation events. However, the specific contribution of P4 in sperm maturation via extratesticular ducts in this stingray species is unknown. With the aim of filling this knowledge gap, this study examined the morphology and the presence of progesterone receptors (PR) in the ducts, and analyzed the relationship of progesterone (P4) with sperm maturation and formation of aggregates. Morphological analysis showed that a columnar pseudostratified epitheli

Stingray spear injury to the pediatric spinal cord: case report and review of the literature.

Stingray injuries are rare, mostly causing injuries to the lower extremities but occasionally fatal if there is direct puncture of the thorax, abdomen, or neck. Direct combined stingray injury to the central nervous system has not been reported in the literature. Herein we present the case of a 12-year-old boy who, while wading at the seashore of the Costa Rica's Pacific Ocean, sustained a combined oblique penetrating injury to the C6 vertebra caused by a Stingray. He initially presented to the hospital with a complete asymmetric right C6/left T1 ASIA A examination, priapism, and loss of anal

Mechanical properties of stingray tesserae: High-resolution correlative analysis of mineral density and indentation moduli in tessellated cartilage.

Skeletal tissues are built and shaped through complex, interacting active and passive processes. These spatial and temporal variabilities make interpreting growth mechanisms from morphology difficult, particularly in bone, where the remodeling process erases and rewrites local structural records of growth throughout life. In contrast to the majority of bony vertebrates, the elasmobranch fishes (sharks, rays, and their relatives) have skeletons made of cartilage, reinforced by an outer layer of mineralized tiles (tesserae), which are believed to grow only by deposition, without remodeling. We e

Hallux amputation after a freshwater stingray injury in the Brazilian Amazon.

Freshwater stingray injuries are a common problem in the Brazilian Amazon, affecting mostly riverine and indigenous populations. These injuries cause severe local and regional pain, swelling and erythema, as well as complications, such as local necrosis and bacterial infection. Herein, we report a case of bacterial infection and hallux necrosis, after a freshwater stingray injury in the Brazilian Amazon, which eventually required amputation. Different antimicrobial regimens were administered at different stages of the disease; however, avoiding amputation through effective treatment was not ac

Immunohistochemical localization of serotonin, leu-enkephalin, tyrosine hydroxylase, and substance P within the visceral sensory area of cartilaginous fish.

We examined the distribution of immunoreactivity to serotonin (5-HT), leu-enkephalin (LENK), tyrosine-hydroxylase (TH), and substance P (SP) within the primary visceral sensory region of cartilaginous fish. Two genera of sharks, Squalus and Heterodontus, a skate, Raja, a ray, Myliobatis, and a holocephalian, Hydrolagus, were used. Cranial nerves, VII, IX, and X enter the visceral sensory complex from the lateral aspect and divide it into lobes. Based on sagittally cut sections, there are four lobes in Hydrolagus and five in Squalus, corresponding to the number of gill arches. The neurochemical

DNA barcoding of Mobulid Ray Gill Rakers for Implementing CITES on Elasmobranch in China.

The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) has been counted on for conserving threatened marine fish since it regulates the commercial international trade of these species. Implementation of the international treaty for Mantas included on CITES Appendix II is challenging due to insufficient information on species identification and markets management. To fill the gap in such aspects, we identified five species of Mobulid rays (Mobula spps. and Manta spp) by using COI and NADH2 mtDNA markers in dried ray gill rakers from Chinese markets, namely,
