Impact of topical fluorouracil cream on costs of treating keratinocyte carcinoma (nonmelanoma skin cancer) and actinic keratosis.

BACKGROUND: It is unknown whether treatment costs for keratinocyte carcinoma (KC) and actinic keratosis (AK) can be lowered by spending more on chemoprevention. OBJECTIVE: To examine the impact of 1-course treatment with topical fluorouracil (5-FU) on the face and ears on KC and AK treatment costs over 3 years. METHODS: The Veterans Affairs Keratinocyte Carcinoma Chemoprevention trial compared the efficacy of topical 5-FU 5% with that of vehicle control cream for reducing KC risk. Trial data and administrative data on costs and utilization were analyzed to measure postrandomization encounter

Does aqueous or sucralfate cream affect the severity of erythematous radiation skin reactions? A randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Evidence on which to base decisions about the management of radiation skin reactions is lacking. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether sucralfate or aqueous cream reduced acute skin toxicity during radiotherapy to the head and neck, breast or anorectal area (phase A), and to evaluate the effect of hydrogels and dry dressings on moist desquamation (phase B). This paper presents the results of phase A. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Three hundred and fifty seven patients were randomised to apply aqueous cream, sucralfate cream or no cream to the irradiated area fro

Barrier Function and Biophysical Effects of 0.104% and 0.247% Retinol Creams in Mature Facial Skin: A Prospective Study.

Retinol, a bioactive small molecule of the vitamin A family, contributes epidermal and dermal tissue repair through retinoic acid receptor γ (RARγ)/retinoid X receptor (RXR) receptor-mediated transcriptional regulation of keratinocyte differentiation, extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling, and barrier restoration. However, the relationship between applied concentration, tissue-level regenerative outcomes, and tolerability remains incompletely characterized. This prospective, randomized, single-blind study compared biophysical effects and tolerance of two retinol concentrations in EU-compliant

A pilot study on the cutaneous effects of ethanol in a moisturizing cream on non-lesional skin of patients with atopic dermatitis.

Ethanol is widely used in cosmetic formulations as a solvent, preservative, and penetration enhancer, yet its effects on atopic skin remain controversial. This study explores the impact of ethanol in skin care products on skin physiology, microbiome composition and subjective perception. A two-part investigation was conducted: (I) ex vivo analysis using porcine skin models exposed to varying ethanol concentrations, and (II) a double blinded, placebo controlled, randomized clinical pilot study on 9 patients with Atopic Dermatitis (AD) comparing creams with and without 12% ethanol. The ex vivo s

Different types of emollient cream exhibit diverse physiological effects on the skin barrier in adults with atopic dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Eczema (atopic dermatitis; AD) is a very common itchy skin condition affecting 1 in 5 children and up to 1 in 10 adults worldwide. The skin of eczema sufferers is prone to redness, irritation and dryness because it does not form an effective barrier, i.e. the ability of the skin to stop irritants, allergens and microorganisms getting into the body. Skin barrier dysfunction is a hallmark of AD. The regular and liberal (600 g/week for an adult) use of emollients is recommended for all patients with eczema), even between episodes of itching and redness, to soften and soothe the skin.

Efficacy of skin barrier creams (IV). The repetitive irritation test (RIT) with a set of 4 standard irritants.

An improved human model for the quantification of skin barrier creams (BCs) is described. In contrast to the previously published procedure, the back, instead of the forearm, and a total of 4 irritants are used. Due to the larger area, 3 BC formulations can be simultaneously compared to the control field, which receives the irritant only, without BC-pretreatment. On 10 human volunteers, the irritants 10% sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), 1% sodium hydroxide (NaOH), 30% lactic acid (LA) and undiluted toluene (TOL) were applied via large Finn Chambers for 30 min, 5 x during the 1st week and 4 x durin

Pharmacological evaluation of curcumin nanosponges enriched with vitamin E: a multifunctional cosmeceutical cream for skin protection and regeneration.

The increasing demand for multifunctional skincare products has led to the development of cosmeceutical formulations incorporating curcumin nanosponges (CUR-NS) and vitamin E, which may improve skin repairs and protection. Both formulations were evaluated for physicochemical parameters such as pH, viscosity, spreadability, drug content, and drug diffusion. Among these, the cosmeceutical cream C3 demonstrated controlled curcumin release (95.07 ± 0.64% over 12 h), following Korsmeyer-Peppas release kinetics (Super Case II transport), and was therefore selected for further investigation. The stab

Antimicrobial and Anti-Infective Potential of Herbal Creams in Dermatology: Efficacy, Safety, and Challenges in Skin Infection Management.

Herbal creams are becoming increasingly popular in dermatology due to their potential to treat a variety of skin conditions, offering a natural, sustainable alternative to synthetic products. Derived from traditional medicine, these formulations contain plant-based bioactive compounds that provide anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and wound-healing properties. Common ingredients such as Aloe vera, tea tree oil, calendula, turmeric, chamomile, and liquorice are known to address skin issues including acne, eczema, psoriasis, and aging. Despite these advantages, safety concerns remai

Trifarotene 0.005% Cream in the Treatment of Facial and Truncal Acne Vulgaris in Patients with Skin of Color: a Case Series.

The clinical appearance of acne vulgaris (AV) and the response to therapeutic agents may vary in people with skin of color (SoC) compared with those with lighter skin types. Given the heightened potential for postinflammatory hyperpigmentation and keloid development, effective and timely AV treatment in patients with SoC is especially important. However, these patients are frequently underrepresented in clinical trials, and SoC photographs are generally underrepresented in dermatology. Trifarotene 0.005% cream is a retinoid approved for the once-daily topical treatment of AV, and was studied i

Effect of diaper cream and wet wipes on skin barrier properties in infants: a prospective randomized controlled trial.

The effect of different diaper care procedures on skin barrier function in infants has been minimally investigated and may be assessed using objective methods. In a single-center, prospective trial, 89 healthy 9-month-old infants (±8 wks) were randomly assigned to three diaper care regimens: group I used water-moistened washcloths at diaper changes (n = 30), group II additionally applied diaper cream twice daily (n = 28), and group III used wet wipes and diaper cream twice daily (n = 31). Transepidermal water loss (TEWL), skin hydration (SCH), skin pH, interleukin 1α (IL-1α) levels, and microb

Severe Nodulocystic Acne Induced by Mercury-Containing Skin-Whitening Cream: A Case Report and Call for Public Awareness.

INTRODUCTION: Skin-whitening products, often containing mercury, are used worldwide for cosmetic purposes but pose significant health risks. Mercury, a melanotoxin, can cause severe dermatological, renal, and neurological complications. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 27-year-old woman who developed severe nodulocystic acne due to chronic use of a mercury-containing skin-whitening cream. Treatment with isotretinoin and prednisolone led to significant improvement within 3 months. CONCLUSION: This case underscores the need for public awareness and stricter regulatory actions to prev

Leucoderma after use of a skin-lightening cream containing kojic dipalmitate, liquorice root extract and Mitracarpus scaber extract.

A lighter or whiter complexion is socially desirable in many cultures. This has led to an unregulated and highly profitable market in skin-lightening creams that are readily available over the counter or on the internet. Plant extracts and newer tyrosinase inhibitors such as kojic acid or its derivative kojic dipalmitate are popular ingredients in these creams. We report a patient who developed depigmented patches after using such a cream.

Tazarotene cream for postinflammatory hyperpigmentation and acne vulgaris in darker skin: a double-blind, randomized, vehicle-controlled study.

Previous investigations have reported the efficacy of tazarotene 0.1% cream for the treatment of dyschromia associated with photoaging and for acne vulgaris. The present investigation assessed tazarotene 0.1% cream for the treatment of postinflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) in a double-blind, randomized, vehicle-controlled study of 74 patients from darker racial ethnic groups who had acne. Once-daily application of tazarotene cream was shown to be effective against PIH, achieving significantly greater reductions compared with vehicle in overall disease severity and in the intensity and area

Randomized, paired comparison of No-Sting Barrier Film versus sorbolene cream (10% glycerine) skin care during postmastectomy irradiation.

PURPOSE: Postmastectomy irradiation provides an excellent model for irradiated skin care practices because of the relatively uniform surface and radiation compared with other situations in which radiation-induced moist desquamation is common. We designed a study to test the effect of prophylactic 3M Cavilon No-Sting Barrier Film (No-Sting) on the rates of moist desquamation compared with sorbolene cream (with 10% glycerin). METHODS AND MATERIALS: The irradiated chest wall was divided into medial and lateral halves. Sixty-one women were randomized to have No-Sting applied to either the medial

Topical cream with essential oils, zinc and salicylic acid reduces pruritus and skin lesion scores in pruritic dogs.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the efficacy of an essential oil, salicylic acid and zinc-based cream in the relief of pruritus not secondary to infectious pyoderma or ectoparasites and associated dermatological lesions. METHODS: Forty-one client-owned, otherwise healthy, dogs with chronic, noninfectious pruritus were enrolled in a double-blinded, placebo-controlled, randomised clinical trial. Dogs were assigned to receive topical treatment using either the study or placebo cream daily for 14 days. Owners recorded pruritus scores using a visual scale (Pruritus Analog Visual Scale [PVAS]) in a daily dia

Facial Demodicosis-Induced Skin Hyperpigmentation in an Immunocompromised Man Treated Successfully with Ivermectin 1% Cream: A Case Report.

Demodex folliculorum is a common ectoparasite of humans that inhabits follicular infundibulum and sebaceous ducts. Its role in various dermatological diseases is well studied. However, data on demodex-induced skin pigmentation are very limited. A diagnosis of this entity can be easily missed for other causes of facial hyperpigmentation such as melasma, lichen planus pigmentosus, erythema dyschromicum perstans, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and drug-induced hyperpigmentation. Here, we report a case of facial demodicosis-induced skin hyperpigmentation in a 35-year-old Saudi male who is on

Plasma fibroblast skin tightening treatment resulting in bilateral chemical eye injury secondary to EMLA cream: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Plasma fibroblast skin tightening treatment is a relatively novel and growing minimally invasive aesthetic skin procedure. The treatment claims to rejuvenate skin by improving facial lines, wrinkles and skin pigmentation associated with photo-ageing. The skin is often anaesthetised prior to the procedure with topical creams such as EMLA (Eutectic mixture of local anaesthetics). We present the first case of bilateral chemical eye injury following plasma fibroblast skin tightening treatment secondary to EMLA cream. EMLA cream was inadvertently administered to both eyes in preparation
