In health, the non-recirculating nature and long-term persistence of tissue-resident memory T cells (TRMs) in tissues protects against invading pathogens. In disease, pathogenic TRMs contribute to the recurring traits of many skin diseases. We aimed to conduct a systematic literature review on the current understanding of the role of TRMs in skin diseases and identify gaps as well as future research paths. EMBASE, PubMed, SCOPUS, Web of Science, Clinicaltrials.gov and WHO Trials Registry were searched systematically for relevant studies from their inception to October 2020. Included studies we

Cold climate and unique genetic and environmental factors may influence the prevalence of skin diseases in Greenland. However, there is a lack of epidemiological studies on skin diseases in the adult Greenlandic population. To address this unmet need a cross-sectional study, run by dermatologists from Denmark, the UK, and Switzerland estimated the prevalence and clinical manifestations of skin diseases among adults in East Greenland in May 2022. All adults ≥18 years in the town of Tasiilaq were invited, and 295 individuals aged 18-78 years participated (22.5% of the overall adult population in

INTRODUCTION: The introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy has produced a substantial change in the natural history of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. The frequency of opportunistic infections and AIDS-related cancers has fallen, though new health problems have developed. Likewise, there has been a change in the spectrum of skin diseases now observed in these patients.
OBJECTIVE: To analyze the prevalence and characteristics of skin disease in a group of HIV-infected outpatients.
METHODS: A cross-sectional, observational study was performed. All patients who attende

Many inflammatory, metabolic and infectious diseases affect the skin and joints. Most of these, such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythaematosus, are considered to be rheumatic conditions with secondary skin involvement. However, several primary cutaneous diseases are associated with arthritis and may even present with joint symptoms prior to cutaneous lesions. Common skin disorders, such as acne and psoriasis, have well-known musculoskeletal manifestations. Other less common conditions, such as dermatomyositis, multicentric reticulohistiocytosis, pyoderma gangrenosum, Sweet's sy

The current pandemic due to widespread SARS-CoV-19 infection has again highlighted the role of obesity, whose global prevalence increased up to 13%, as a risk factor for both susceptibility to infections and the occurrence of a more severe disease course. To date, this association has not been sufficiently explored. Obesity-related susceptibility to infectious diseases is mostly thought to be due to an impairment of both innate and adaptive immune responses and vitamin D deficiency. Several cofactors can indirectly favour the onset and/or worsening of infectious diseases, such as impairment of

Previous observational inquiries have revealed a correlation between depression and infectious maladies. This study seeks to elucidate the causal linkages between depression, specifically Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), and infectious diseases. Nevertheless, the causative nature of the association between MDD and infectious diseases remains elusive. Two-sample Mendelian Randomization (MR) analyses was executed utilizing single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) significantly connected with MDD and infectious diseases as instrumental variables (IVs). A series of sensitivity analyses were subseque

Sweet's syndrome (SS) is an acute neutrophilic dermatosis characterised by abrupt onset of fever, leukocytosis and cutaneous eruption, with dermal neutrophilia on skin biopsy. Most cases are idiopathic but SS can be associated with various affections, especially neoplastic, inflammatory and infectious diseases. The authors report the case of an SS occurring in a patient with a known rheumatoid arthritis associated with a secondary Sjögren's syndrome, with incidental finding of concurrent lymph node tuberculosis. In case of SS, an associated disease (malignant, inflammatory or infectious diseas

Ticks are direct pathogenic agents, and also transmit some infectious diseases such as borreliosis. Clinical manifestations of borreliosis are multiple. They most often affect the skin, nervous system, joints and heart. Cutaneous pseudolymphomas, erythema chronicum migrans of Afzelius, acrodermatitis chronica atrophicans of Pick-Herxheimer, meningo-radiculitis and various arthropathies are the most commonly encountered diseases.

Spirochetal organisms were demonstrated histologically in skin biopsy specimens from a patient with Lyme disease and erythema chronicum migrans. The patient responded rapidly to penicillin G benzathine administration. Convalescent serum contained a high titer of antibody to an lxodes dammini spirochete antigen. The finding of spirochetes in an erythema chronicum migrans lesion in a patient with clinical Lyme disease supports further recent evidence that this illness is an infectious disease caused by a tick-borne bacterium. The skin biopsy may be a useful diagnostic tool in this disease.

BACKGROUND: Genetic diseases leading to skin fragility are clinically and genetically heterogeneous. Dermatologists and pediatricians should be familiar with the variability of manifestations and manifestation age, in order to differentiate these rare diseases from more common causes of blistering, such as infectious (impetigo contagiosa, herpes infection) or traumatic causes (burns, scalds). This is essential to initiate appropriate diagnostic measures, provide information on treatment and prevention and to refer to specialized centers.
OBJECTIVES: The classification of the diseases discusse

Children who are infected with human immunodeficiency virus may develop a wide variety of mucocutaneous manifestations, such as skin infections, tumors, and inflammatory skin disorders. The most significant infectious diseases are candidiasis, dermatophytosis, herpes simplex, herpes zoster, and pyoderma. Inflammatory disorders include seborrheic dermatitis, vasculitis, and pyoderma gangrenosum. Kaposi sarcoma is extremely rare in children with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

Infection with HIV or AIDS has a great impact on skin diseases, not only by affecting the immune system and thereby host defense against bacterial, viral, or mycotic infection, but also by changing tumor immune response and autoimmune reactivity. In the present review, emphasis will be made on infectious diseases, including sexually transmitted disease, inflammatory skin disease, and neoplasias. Knowledge of changing disease pattern with HIV/AIDS may help the clinical dermatologist and venerologist to identify dermatoses and act in the most appropriate manner to support the patient.

Infectious skin conditions of the adult patient that primary care providers may often encounter in practice include those of viral (herpes simplex, herpes zoster, verruca and condylomata, molluscum), fungal (candidiasis, dermatophyte infections) and ectoparasitic (scabies, pediculosis) origin. Correct diagnosis and treatment of these conditions can provide relief to the patient and prevent spread to household and sexual contacts. This article discusses the epidemiology, etiology, history, appearance, diagnosis, and treatment of these commonly encountered infectious skin conditions. The primary

Tropical Storm Daniel struck northeastern Libya on 10 September 2023, leading to the collapse of two dams and catastrophic floods. The disaster resulted in massive casualties and infrastructure damage, and led to infectious disease outbreaks. This study aimed to summarize the incidence and distribution of infectious diseases reported after the flood, describe temporal and geographical trends, and public health implications. We retrospectively reviewed 90 daily epidemiological reports produced by the National Routine Surveillance System (NRSS) between 14 September and 24 December 2023. From eac

Erythema migrans or Lyme borreliosis may be classified according to 3 stages. Erythema migrans is the typical initial lesion of the disease, often associated with general symptoms. Carditis, meningitis, musculoskeletal symptoms including arthralgia may develop in stage 2; arthritis (arthralgia), acrodermatitis chronica atrophicans (ACA), and encephalomyelitis may occur in stage 3. Borrelial lymphocytoma may be seen either in the early phase of the disease or along with the ACA. However, there is no definite therapeutical concept, so far. We recommend tetracyclines during the first stage, and h
