Effects of sleep deprivation on the postnatal development of visual-deprived cells in the cat's lateral geniculate nucleus.

1. Observations made by Wiesel and Hubel in kittens during the critical period have shown that monocular visual deprivation (MD) produces hypotrophic changes in the deprived layers of the LGN. Since, in addition to retinal inputs, the LGN also receives extraretinal inputs which are particularly active during REM sleep (a phase which is highly represented at birth), we performed experiments to find out whether total sleep deprivation (SD) interferes with the neuronal maturation in the LGN, thus modifying the susceptibility of LGN neurons to MD. 2. Ten groups of twin kittens were submitted to ey

Targeting microbiota to alleviate the harm caused by sleep deprivation.

Sleep deprivation has become a common health hazard, affecting 37-58% of the population and promoting the occurrence and development of many diseases. To date, effective treatment strategies are still elusive. Accumulating evidence indicates that modulating the intestinal microbiota harbors significant potential for alleviating the deleterious impacts of sleep deprivation. This paper first reviews the effects of sleep deprivation on gastrointestinal diseases, metabolic diseases, and neuropsychiatric diseases, discussing its specific mechanisms of influence. We then focus on summarizing existin

Impact of sleep deprivation on neurocognition and inflammation in rhesus macaques.

Sleep deprivation in humans is associated with both cognitive impairment and immune dysregulation. An animal model of neuropathogenesis may provide insight to understand the effects of sleep deprivation on the brain. Human neurocognition is more closely mirrored by nonhuman primates (NHP) than other animals. As such, we developed an NHP model to assess the impact of sleep deprivation on neurocognition and markers of systemic immune activation. Six male rhesus macaques underwent three rounds of sleep deprivation (48 h without sleep) at days 0, 14, and 28. We performed domain specific cognitive

Gambling when sleep deprived: don't bet on stimulants.

Recent evidence suggests that sleep deprivation leads to suboptimal decision-making on the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT), a pattern that appears to be unaffected by moderate doses of caffeine. It is not known whether impaired decision-making could be reversed by higher doses of caffeine or by other stimulant countermeasures, such as dextroamphetamine or modafinil. Fifty-four diurnally active healthy subjects completed alternate versions of the IGT at rested baseline, at 23 and 46 h awake, and following a night of recovery sleep. After 44 h awake, participants received a double-blind dose of caffein

Molecular and anatomical signatures of sleep deprivation in the mouse brain.

Sleep deprivation (SD) leads to a suite of cognitive and behavioral impairments, and yet the molecular consequences of SD in the brain are poorly understood. Using a systematic immediate-early gene (IEG) mapping to detect neuronal activation, the consequences of SD were mapped primarily to forebrain regions. SD was found to both induce and suppress IEG expression (and thus neuronal activity) in subregions of neocortex, striatum, and other brain regions. Laser microdissection and cDNA microarrays were used to identify the molecular consequences of SD in seven brain regions. In situ hybridizatio

The influences of time-of-day and sleep deprivation on postural control.

The aim of this study was to check the combined and/or dissociated influences of time-of-day and sleep deprivation on postural control. Twenty subjects participated in test sessions which took place at 6:00 am, 10:00 am, 2:00 pm and 6:00 pm either after a normal night's sleep or after a night of total sleep deprivation. Postural control was evaluated by COP surface area, LFS ratio and Romberg's index. The results showed that postural control fluctuates diurnally according to three different periods, pronounced by sleep deprivation: (1) at 6:00 am, there was no modification by sleep deprivation

Sleep deprivation, epilepsy and the ability to operate a motor vehicle.

This study is based upon 207 examinations for the evaluation of the ability to operate a motor vehicle in persons with transient disturbances of the cerebral function. In 26 persons, the EEG was repeated after sleep deprivation. There was EEG activation with transient disturbances in seven cases (not present in the routine EEG). In five individuals, there were transient disturbances in the routine EEG as well as after sleep deprivation. No abnormalities were recorded in 14 persons. No driver's license could be granted in five patients with unequivocal spike wave complexes or spike wave paroxys

The Impact of Sleep Deprivation on Orthopaedic Surgeons: A Systematic Review.

Sleep deprivation is known to impact cognition, health and mood. Although the effect of sleep deprivation among medical and certain surgical specialties has been explored, there is a paucity of literature regarding sleep in orthopaedic surgeons. This systematic review attempts to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of research on sleep in orthopaedic surgeons. Following the PRISMA guidelines for systematic reviews, we conducted a search of MEDLINE, Psychinfo and EMBASE to find all articles about sleep in orthopaedic surgeons. Inclusion criteria were non-review articles discus

On-call-related sleep deprivation and hypomania in healthcare workers.

OBJECTIVE: Acute sleep deprivation can induce antidepressant effects. We hypothesized that overnight calls can trigger symptoms of hypomania during the post-on-call period. METHODS: Online anonymous cross-sectional survey among Spanish-speaking healthcare professionals, including the Hypomania Symptom Checklist-32 (HCL-32). RESULTS: 2099 respondents. Most of them reported that they usually feel worse on their post-on-call period (91,3%), but the 51,6% acknowledged having felt better at least once and 33,4% reported it happened in at least at 50% of their calls. Up to 4,9% reached the cut-off

The effect of sleep deprivation on empathy for pain: An ERP study.

Empathy for pain has a strong adaptive function. It plays a protective role in survival and exerts a vital impact on successful social interaction. Sleep loss, however, is commonplace in current society, and people are increasingly plagued by it. Previous studies have investigated whether sleep loss affects empathy for pain, yet the results were undecided. We aimed to determine whether this effect is existed and further explore the temporal and frequency dynamics of neural activities involved in this effect by recording the electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. We recruited 25 healthy adults (11

The role of glucocorticoids in ovarian development of sleep deprived rats.

OBJECTIVE: Sleep deprivation (SD) adversely affects female reproductive function. In this study, we investigated the role of glucocorticoids in ovarian development in sleep deprived rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Female rats were subjected to SD for 1-4 days. Concentrations of serum estradiol and corticosterone were assessed. Betamethasone (BET) and/or recombinant human follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) were administered to 21-day-old female rats for 2 days to evaluate ovarian status for follicular development. Intact preantral follicles were mechanically dissected from the rat's ovaries and c

The effects of sleep deprivation on item and associative recognition memory.

Sleep deprivation adversely affects the ability to perform cognitive tasks, but theories range from predicting an overall decline in cognitive functioning because of reduced stability in attentional networks to specific deficits in various cognitive domains or processes. We measured the effects of sleep deprivation on two memory tasks, item recognition ("was this word in the list studied") and associative recognition ("were these two words studied in the same pair"). These tasks test memory for information encoded a few minutes earlier and so do not address effects of sleep deprivation on work

Effect of Sleep Deprivation on the Male Reproductive System in Rats.

There has been no study reporting on the influence of sleep deprivation on the male reproductive system including sperm quality. In this study, we hypothesized that sleep deprivation could lead to adverse effect on the male reproductive system. The rats were divided into three groups: 1) control (home-cage, n = 10); 2) SD4 (sleep deprivation for 4 days, n = 10); and 3) SD7 (sleep deprivation for 7 days, n = 10). Sleep deprivation was performed by a modified multiple platform method. Sperm quality (sperm motion parameters and counts), hormone levels (corticosterone and testosterone), and the hi

Effects of acute and chronic sleep deprivation on cardiovascular regulation.

Sleep is a fundamental physiological process, characterized by the activation of several cortical and subcortical neural networks. The relation between sleep and cardiovascular system is complex and bidirectional: sleep disorders may alter cardiovascular system, leading to an increased cardiovascular risk, while, on the contrary, cardio- vascular diseases are characterized by an alteration of physiological sleep. Autonomic nervous system (ANS) plays a key role in the regulation of cardiovascular functions during different sleep stages, with sympatho-vagal balance dynamically shifting towards s

Sleep deprivation affects extinction but not acquisition memory in honeybees.

Sleep-like behavior has been studied in honeybees before, but the relationship between sleep and memory formation has not been explored. Here we describe a new approach to address the question if sleep in bees, like in other animals, improves memory consolidation. Restrained bees were observed by a web camera, and their antennal activities were used as indicators of sleep. We found that the bees sleep more during the dark phase of the day compared with the light phase. Sleep phases were characterized by two distinct patterns of antennal activities: symmetrical activity, more prominent during t

Sleep deprivation is hyperalgesic in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Studies have demonstrated that gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) can cause sleep deprivation because of nighttime heartburn or short, amnestic arousals during sleep. Sleep deprivation has been associated with reports of increased GERD severity. Our aim was to determine whether sleep deprivation enhances perception of intraesophageal acid in patients with GERD vs healthy controls. METHODS: Ten healthy controls and 10 patients with erosive esophagitis (grades B-D) were included in the study. All subjects were randomized to either sleep deprivation (1 night with </=3 hour
