Two phenotypes have been proposed: insomnia with objective near-normal sleep duration, related to increased psychological symptoms, and insomnia with objective short sleep duration, associated with cardiometabolic morbidity. Reduced heart rate variability has also been implicated in the pathophysiology of cardiometabolic disease; however, there are little data on whether cardiovascular function differs between patients with objective short sleep duration and near-normal sleep duration. Participants (Mage = 49.9 ± 11.3 years; 62.8% female) were 180 adults with chronic insomnia (Mduration = 15

We examined potential risk factors for changes in objectively assessed sleep duration within a large sample of community-dwelling older men. Participants (n = 1,055; mean baseline age = 74.6 (standard deviation (SD), 4.7) years) had repeated ActiGraph assessments (ActiGraph LLC, Pensacola, Florida) taken at the baseline (2003-2005) and follow-up (2009-2012) waves of the Outcomes of Sleep Disorders in Older Men Study (an ancillary study to the Osteoporotic Fractures in Men (MrOS) Study conducted in 6 US communities). Among men with a baseline nighttime sleep duration of 5-8 hours, we assessed t

BACKGROUND: Studies of breast cancer in women and laboratory studies provide evidence that shift work involving circadian rhythm disruption is a probable human carcinogen. However, evidence linking shift work and other circadian disruption factors to prostate cancer risk is limited.
PURPOSE: To examine associations of work schedule (i.e., rotating shift work, fixed night and fixed afternoon/evening shift work); sleep duration; and insomnia frequency with prostate cancer mortality.
METHODS: The Cancer Prevention Study-II is a large prospective cohort study of U.S. adults. Work schedule, sleep

Lewy bodies have been described in the locus coeruleus of some patients with essential tremor (ET), and this brainstem nucleus plays an important role in sleep cycle regulation. Despite this, no studies have investigated the relationship between daily sleep duration and the risk of ET. We determined whether baseline daily sleep duration was associated with an increased risk of incident ET. In this prospective, population-based study of individuals > 65 years of age (the Neurological Disorders in Central Spain [NEDICES] cohort), participants were evaluated at baseline and 3 years later. BACKGROUND: Although previous studies showed the long-term effects of sleep duration on risk of weight gain, Western tends to gain weight irrespective of sleep duration over a long period. Conversely, it is showed that body mass index (BMI) decreases during a long period in Japanese and thus, the long-term effect of sleep duration on weight gain and obesity is still unclear in Asia.
METHODS: We followed up 13,629 participants aged 40-79years and prospectively collected data from 1995 to 2006. We divided the participants into five groups according to their self-reported sleep duration: ⩽5h (sh

BACKGROUND: Short sleep duration has been found to be closely related to several endocrine and metabolic dysfunctions. However, evidence of the association between insufficient sleep and bone health was limited.
OBJECTIVE: The present study was aimed to examine the relationships between sleep duration and bone mineral density (BMD) in Chinese women.
METHODS: Six hundred and two women aged 18-80 years were analyzed. Sleep duration was collapsed to form categories of 5h or less, 6h, 7h, 8h, and 9h or more. Total and regional BMD were measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Multiple re

PURPOSE: Sleep plays an important role in healthy neurocognitive development, and poor sleep is linked to cognitive and emotional dysfunction. Studies in adults suggest that shorter sleep duration and poor sleep quality may disrupt core neurocognitive networks, particularly the default mode network (DMN)-a network implicated in internal cognitive processing and rumination. Here, we examine the relationships between sleep and within- and between-network resting-state functional connectivity (rs-FC) of the DMN in youth.
METHODS: This study included 3,798 youth (11.9 ± 0.6 years, 47.5% female) f

BACKGROUND: Sleep has a significant impact on the incidence of cardiovascular diseases (CVD), but there is no comprehensive research on this topic.
AIMS: Assess the association between sleep factors and the risk of cardiovascular diseases in terms of comprehensive sleep behavior.
METHODS: This study included 8,075 subjects from NHANES 2017-2020, excluding those with missing sleep/CVD data. Poor sleep factors: abnormal sleep duration (<7h or>8h), trouble sleeping, snoring, snort or stop breathing, sleepy during day. Each factor was scored (0-12 total), classifying sleep patterns as healthy (0

BACKGROUND: Sleep disturbances have become increasingly prevalent in modern society. Research suggests that a deficiency in magnesium (Mg) may contribute to sleep disturbances. This study aims to investigate the association between daily Mg intake and self-reported sleep duration and sleep disorders using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES).
METHODS: The study dataset includes participants from five cycles (2009-2018) of NHANES. The associations between Mg intake and sleep duration are analyzed using weighted logistic regression.
RESULTS: Baseline characte

Objectives: This study proposed to examine sexual identity differences in sleep duration and sleep health (use of sleep medications or sedatives, trouble sleeping, and diagnosis of sleeping disorders) among American adults. Methods: Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2005-2014) were used. Sex-stratified multiple logistic regression models were used to compare sleep duration and sleep health between sexual minority (gay/lesbian, bisexual, not-sure) and heterosexual participants, adjusted for predetermined covariates. Heterosexual participants were the reference grou

Cigarette smoking is a severe health burden being related to a number of chronic diseases. Frequently, smokers report about sleep problems. Sleep disturbance, in turn, has been demonstrated to be involved in the pathophysiology of several disorders related to smoking and may be relevant for the pathophysiology of nicotine dependence. Therefore, determining the frequency of sleep disturbance in otherwise healthy smokers and its association with degree of nicotine dependence is highly relevant. In a population-based case-control study, 1071 smokers and 1243 non-smokers without lifetime Diagnosti

PURPOSE: Co-morbid insomnia and obstructive sleep apnea (COMISA) poses greater cardiovascular risks than either condition alone. We investigated whether COMISA associated with insomnia with short sleep duration (ISSD) phenotype is associated with an increased risk of incident hypertension in a large random general population sample.
METHODS: From the 1741 participants of the Penn State Adult Cohort, 1395 were followed-up after 7.5 years and 786 did not have hypertension at baseline. Hypertension was determined by a self-report of receiving treatment for high blood pressure. Insomnia symptoms

Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) infects central nervous tissue and is kept in relative dormancy by a healthy immune system. Sleep disturbances have been found to precipitate mental illness, suicidal behavior and car accidents, which have been previously linked to T. gondii as well. We speculated that if sleep disruption, particularly insomnia, would mediate, at least partly, the link between T. gondii infection and related behavioral dysregulation, then we would be able to identify significant associations between sleep disruption and T. gondii. The mechanisms for such an association may involve
