Insomnia significantly impacts mental health and is linked to a range of other health issues, including cardiovascular diseases, depression and anxiety. Acupuncture, a traditional non-pharmacological intervention, enhances sleep quality by modulating neural circuits and neurotransmitter systems within the brain, particularly in regions such as the hypothalamus, brainstem, and limbic system. It can regulate circadian rhythms, facilitate the equilibrium of neurohormones and neurotransmitters, including melatonin, 5-hydroxytryptamine and γ-aminobutyric acid, and mitigate stress responses through

BACKGROUND: People share health-related experiences and treatments, such as for insomnia, in digital communities. Natural language processing tools can be leveraged to understand the terms used in digital spaces to discuss insomnia and insomnia treatments.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to summarize and chart trends of insomnia treatment terms on a digital insomnia message board.
METHODS: We performed a natural language processing analysis of the r/insomnia subreddit. Using Pushshift, we obtained all r/insomnia subreddit comments from 2008 to 2022. A bag of words model was used to ident

The sensitivity of plastic artists to human suffering has been expressed in different ways. This article recounts the circumstances that led the Spanish-Mexican surrealist painter, Remedios Varo, to depict in an original way the two cardinal manifestations of fibromyalgia; widespread pain and insomnia.

BACKGROUND: Many people suffer from insomnia, a sleep disorder characterized by difficulty falling and staying asleep during the night. As social media have become a ubiquitous platform to share users' thoughts, opinions, activities, and preferences with their friends and acquaintances, the shared content across these platforms can be used to diagnose different health problems, including insomnia. Only a few recent studies have examined the prediction of insomnia from Twitter data, and we found research gaps in predicting insomnia from word usage patterns and correlations between users' insomn

OBJECTIVE: Perform a non-systematic review of the literature to describe the relationship between insomnia and suicide and the findings of these studies.
METHODS: A search was conducted in PubMed, Medline, SciELO, LILACS, and Cochrane Library OVID data combining MeSH terms: "Suicide and sleep initiation and maintenance disorders".
RESULTS: Insomnia has been related to suicidal ideation, suicide attempts and suicide deaths in cross sectional studies since more than a decade. Suicide is one of the main causes of death.
DISCUSSION: There are multiple risk factors for committing suicide; some a

Barbiturates had been playing an important role in treating insomnia for more than 100 years. To date, benzodiazepines and related compounds seem to be superseding the role of barbiturates because of their relative safeness. In this article, a brief summary on barbiturates as hypnotics is described including the history of development, mechanism of action, and disadvantageous pharmacological properties that limit application as sleep-inducing medication. Unrecognized problems concerning barbiturate prescription in Japan are also discussed.

Wearable consumer health trackers (CHTs) are increasingly used for sleep monitoring, yet their utility remains debated within the sleep community. To navigate these perspectives, we propose pragmatic, actionable recommendations for users, clinicians, researchers, and manufacturers to support CHT usage and development. We provide an overview of the evolution of multi-sensor CHTs, detailing common sensors and sleep-relevant metrics. We advocate for standardized 'fundamental sleep measures' across manufacturers, distinguishing these from proprietary exploratory metrics with future potential. We o

BACKGROUND: Poor sleep is a potential modifiable risk factor for later life development cognitive impairment. The aim of this study is to examine if subjective measures of sleep duration and sleep disturbance predict future cognitive decline in a population-based cohort of 60, 66, 72 and 78-year-olds with a maximal follow up time of 18 years.
METHODS: This study included participants from the Swedish National Study on Ageing and Care - Blekinge, with assessments 2001-2021. A cohort of 60 (n = 478), 66 (n = 623), 72 (n = 662) and 78 (n = 548) year-olds, were assessed at baseline and every 6 ye

INTRODUCTION: Sleep disorders, especially insomnia, are very common in different kinds of cancers, but their prevalence and incidence are not well-known. Disturbed sleep in cancer is caused by different reasons and usually appears as a comorbid disorder to different somatic and psychiatric diagnoses, psychological disturbances and treatment methods. There can be many different predictors for sleep disturbances in these vulnerable groups, such as pre-existing sleep disorders, caused by the mental status in cancer or as side effect of the cancer treatment.
METHODS: A systematic literature revie

PURPOSE: Sleep disorders are common following stroke and traumatic brain injury. We present a systematic review of the literature investigating conservative interventions to improve sleep in these populations.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The PRISMA statement was used. Embase, PubMed, and the Cochrane library were searched for all experimental studies published prior to 28th March 2020 that assessed conservative interventions to improve the sleep or sleep disorders of adults with a history of stroke or traumatic brain injury (TBI). Two authors reviewed publications of interest and risk of bias asse

BACKGROUND: Sleep disturbances are common in parkinsonian disorders; however, whether sleep disorders affect individuals with early-onset parkinsonism and whether they differ from individuals with typical-onset parkinsonism is unknown.
OBJECTIVE: To compare the prevalence and incidence of sleep disorders before and after parkinsonian motor symptom onset between individuals with early onset parkinsonism (age ≤50 at motor symptom onset) and typical-onset parkinsonism (age >50 at motor symptom onset).
METHODS: We used a population-based, 1991 to 2015 incident-cohort study of parkinsonism includ

Sleep disturbances are a core feature of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and can affect PTSD onset, maintenance, and recovery. However, there is conflicting evidence about the directionality of sleep and PTSD symptoms, particularly at the daily level. The current systematic review summarizes the literature on within-person associations between daily PTSD symptoms and sleep among trauma-exposed adults. We searched four databases using PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Of 2006 screened articles, six met inclusion criteria. Study sample sizes ranged from 30 to 202 participants, and studies assessed PT

The current article reviews adjustments that were made to the classification of sleep disorders in the 11th revision of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-11) in comparison to the 10th revision of the coding system (ICD-10). A new chapter on sleep-wake disorders was introduced as chapter 7 in ICD-11, removing the distinction in nonorganic and organic sleep disorders that was used in ICD-10. The rationale for this was the commonsense notion that clinicians and researchers have difficulties to identify the etiology of insomnia and to establi

BACKGROUND: Sedative-hypnotic drugs are often initiated in hospital to manage insomnia and anxiety. Guidelines discourage their use, particularly in older adults, due to risks of falls, fractures, and delirium.
AIM: To identify publicly available resources to decrease the use of sedative-hypnotic drugs and promote sleep in hospital.
METHOD: An advanced Google search with 6 search strategies was conducted. Key websites were also identified and searched. Hospital- or community-based resources using non-pharmacologic measures to reduce sedative-hypnotic drug use and/or to promote sleep were inc

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Characteristics of sleep concerns and their relationship to mental health in heterogeneous substance use disorder (SUD) treatment settings are not well understood. The purpose of this preliminary study was to assess sleep using subjective and objective measures at two time points during SUD treatment and compare sleep changes to changes in mental health measures.
METHODS: Treatment-seeking participants completed an assessment battery at the beginning of treatment (Time 1, N = 30) and again upon treatment completion (Time 2, approximately 4 weeks later, N = 22). The
