Differential characteristics of repeated polysomnography and multiple sleep latency test parameters in narcolepsy type 1 and type 2 patients: a longitudinal retrospective study.

PURPOSE: Narcolepsy is a chronic disorder and its phenotype is dichotomized into narcolepsy type 1 (NT1) and narcolepsy type 2 (NT2). The clinical course and pathophysiological mechanisms of these two clinical entities and their differences are not adequately defined. This study aimed to explore the differential longitudinal patterns of polysomnography (PSG) and multiple sleep latency test (MSLT) in NT1 and NT2. METHODS: In this retrospective study demographic characteristics, PSG, and MSLT parameters at baseline and follow-up were compared between NT1 and NT2 patients. Patients with both fol

The Use of Middle Latency Auditory Evoked Potentials (MLAEP) as Methodology for Evaluating Sedation Level in Propofol-Drug Induced Sleep Endoscopy (DISE) Procedure.

To analyze the middle latency auditory evoked potential index (MLAEPi), compared to the standard bispectral index (BIS), as a method for evaluating the sedation level in drug-induced sleep endoscopy (DISE). In this controlled clinical study on a sample of 99 obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) or snoring patients, we compared the MLAEPi with the BIS after propofol infusion during the standard DISE technique in order to define the MLAEPi values within the observational window of the procedure. The DISE procedure was divided into eight steps, and we collected both MLAEPi and BIS data values from the s

The Origins of the Dark-Hyperactivity and Negative Peer Relationships, an Objectively Lower Sleep Efficiency, and a Longer Sleep Onset Latency at Age Five Were Associated with Callous-Unemotional Traits and Low Empathy at Age 14.

BACKGROUND: Within the spectrum of emotional competencies, callous-unemotional traits are socially discouraged, while empathy is considered a socially much more accepted emotional trait. This holds particularly true for adolescents, who are still building up their social and emotional competencies. The aims of the present study were two-fold: First, longitudinally, to identify traits of behavioral problems and objective sleep dimensions at the age of 5 years to predict callous-unemotional traits and empathy at the age of 14 years. Second, cross-sectionally, to associate callous-unemotional tra

Effects of a digital psychosocial intervention on somatic complaints, sleep latency problems, and body size perceptions in youth after parental separation: A randomized controlled trial.

Parental relationship dissolution is a disruptive event in children and adolescents' lives that can negatively affect mental health, psychosocial adjustment, and everyday well-being. Psychosocial interventions are typically evaluated using measures of mental health and psychosocial adjustment, but less is known about whether they also improve less obvious well-being indicators such as somatic complaints, sleep latency problems, and body size perceptions. This study examined the effects of SES NXT, a digital psychosocial intervention from the Samarbejde Efter Skilsmisse (SES; "Cooperation After

Efficacy study comparing a CBT-I developed for shift workers (CBT-I-S) to standard CBT-I (cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia) on sleep onset latency, total sleep time, subjective sleep quality, and daytime sleepiness: study protocol for a parallel group randomised controlled trial with online therapy groups of seven sessions each.

BACKGROUND: Shift workers are at an increased risk of developing sleep disorders. The standard therapy recommended for sleep disorders is cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I). Many of its interventions are based on a regular sleep and wake rhythm, which is difficult to apply for shift workers. We have therefore developed a new therapy manual specifically for shift workers (CBT-I-S), which should be more applicable to their needs. In particular, all interventions that require regularity have been removed, and instead, interventions that address factors that proved to be relevant t

Forty-eight-hour polysomnographic evaluation of narcolepsy.

Eleven narcoleptic and 11 control subjects completed five multiple sleep latency test (MSLT) procedures with instructions to "fall asleep" while supine and five maintenance of wakefulness test (MWT) procedures with instructions to "remain awake" while comfortably sitting. Narcoleptic subjects had a shorter sleep latency and a higher frequency of sleep onset REM periods (SOREMPs) on both daytime tests than controls. Each group had a longer sleep latency on the MWT than MSLT. For patients with narcolepsy, the differences between the two daytime procedures suggest the tests measure distinct aspec

Rebound insomnia induced by abrupt withdrawal of hypnotics in sleep-disturbed rats.

The present study was performed to examine whether or not rebound insomnia is caused by an abrupt withdrawal of benzodiazepine hypnotics and tandospirone in rats. Etizolam and triazolam caused a significant shortening of sleep latency, increase in non-REM sleep time, and decrease in wake time in a dose-dependent manner. Etizolam and triazolam caused a significant shortening of sleep latency during drug administration (for 7 days), whereas a significant prolongation of sleep latency was observed by the abrupt withdrawal of these drugs. Tandospirone caused a shortening of sleep latency, whereas

Migraine may disturb sleep perception during sleep onset: a retrospective data analysis.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: As sleep latency is an important factor in the diagnosis of many disorders, it is important to know whether the patient's self-reported evaluation of sleep latency corresponds with an objectively measured evaluation. Some studies indicate that patients usually overestimate their sleep latency. We sought to determine how comorbidities affect the patient's ability to assess their sleep latency. METHODS: This was a retrospective study of 240 patients who had a polysomnography recorded at our sleep unit or at home in 2017-2020. Data on comorbidities were collected from hospital

Hypersomnia and the perception of sleep-wake states: some preliminary findings.

35 hypersomniacs (20 with obstructive sleep apnea and 15 with narcolepsy) and 15 controls estimated sleep latency during systematic trials of attempting to remain awake during the day. The error in subjective assessment of sleep latency was more variable for both patient groups than for controls. In addition, narcoleptics could not provide a determination of sleep latency or differentiate sleep-wake states on nearly 23% of all trials. Ratings on a subjective sleepiness scale did not covary with objective sleep latency for any hypersomniac. The findings suggested that patients with either sleep

Rapid eye movement latency in children and adolescents.

Rapid eye movement sleep distribution changes during development, but little is known about rapid eye movement latency variation in childhood by age, sex, or pathologic sleep states. We hypothesized that: (1) rapid eye movement latency would differ in normal children by age, with a younger cohort (1-10 years) demonstrating shorter rapid eye movement latency than an older group (>10-18 years); (2) rapid eye movement latency in children would differ from typical adult rapid eye movement latency; and (3) intrinsic sleep disorders (narcolepsy, pediatric obstructive sleep apnea syndrome) would disr

[Slow eye movement analysis in patients with obstructive sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome].

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether slow eye movement (SEM) analysis performed comparably to standard sleep onset criteria at the multiple sleep latency test (MSLT) and the maintenance of wakefulness test (MWT) in patients with obstructive sleep apnea/hyponea syndrome (OSAHS). METHODS: We compared SEM latencies with sleep latencies upon analysis of MSLT and MWT recordings artificially, in a population of 20 severe OSAHS patients that randomly underwent the 2 tests 2 days apart. They all answered the Epworth Sleepiness Scale. RESULTS: Mean SEM latency was different from standard sleep onset in th
