Babesia spp. in ticks and wildlife in different habitat types of Slovakia.

BACKGROUND: Babesiosis is an emerging and potentially zoonotic disease caused by tick-borne piroplasmids of the Babesia genus. New genetic variants of piroplasmids with unknown associations to vectors and hosts are recognized. Data on the occurrence of Babesia spp. in ticks and wildlife widen the knowledge on the geographical distribution and circulation of piroplasmids in natural foci. Questing and rodent-attached ticks, rodents, and birds were screened for the presence of Babesia-specific DNA using molecular methods. Spatial and temporal differences of Babesia spp. prevalence in ticks and ro

Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii antibodies in a healthy population from Slovakia.

BACKGROUND: Toxoplasma gondii is a ubiquitous parasite of warm-blooded animals that causes one of the most common parasitic infections in humans. Toxoplasmosis is not a frequently reported disease and its prevalence is based on regional studies. METHODS: This prospective, cross-sectional study was conducted to evaluate the seroprevalence of T. gondii antibodies in a non-endemic area among 508 healthy individuals in Slovakia. ELISA was used to detect the levels of IgG, IgA, and IgM antibodies. Epidemiological factors and clinical symptoms associated with seropositivity were investigated using

Microbial Safety of Smoothie Drinks from Fresh Bars Collected in Slovakia.

Among the many consumers in Slovakia, smoothies are nowadays gaining popularity. Smoothie drinks are prepared from raw fruits and vegetables. Therefore, their microbiological safety depends on hygiene standards. The aim of this work was to monitor and quantify selected sensitive and antibiotic-resistant microorganisms present in collected smoothies. Twenty analyzed smoothie samples were collected from six food service establishments (fresh bars) in the capital city of Slovakia, Bratislava. Antibiotic-resistant bacteria were found in at least one of each fresh bar. Antibiotic-resistant coliform

Genomic Diversity of Listeria monocytogenes Isolates From Slovakia (2010 to 2020).

Over the past 11 years, the Slovak National Reference Laboratory has collected a panel of 988 Listeria monocytogenes isolates in Slovakia, which were isolated from various food sectors (61%), food-processing environments (13.7%), animals with listeriosis symptoms (21.2%), and human cases (4.1%). We serotyped these isolates by agglutination method, which revealed the highest prevalence (61.1%) of serotype 1/2a and the lowest (4.7%) of serotype 1/2c, although these represented the majority of isolates from the meat sector. The distribution of CCs analyzed on 176 isolates demonstrated that CC11-S

Dose reduction using bismuth shielding during paediatric CT examinations in Slovakia.

Considering the massive increase of computer tomography (CT) examinations in Slovakia during the last 10 y, it can be expected that a higher radiation load may be observed in the Slovak population. Since child population is more sensitive to radiation than adult population, a monitoring has started to see how high the radiation dose is for paediatric patients during CT examinations in chosen departments in Slovakia. The CT examination of the head is one of the most frequently done examinations in Slovakian departments and that is why measurements were done to clarify how usage of bismuth shiel

Characteristics of some tick--borne encephalitis virus strains isolated in Slovakia.

Several tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus strains isolated in Slovakia from 1974-1978 were characterized by their cytophatic abilities, sensitivity to heating at 50 degrees C and to 2 M urea, and pathogenicity for white mice. Strains isolated from Ixodes ricinus ticks differed in pathogenic properties from those isolated from Clethrinomys glareolus. The latter strains (Skalica) may be considered a spontaneous variant of TBA virus with decreased virulence for mice.
