INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Following the introduction of smoke-free policies in prisons in several countries, there have been anecdotal reports of prisoners creating cigarettes by mixing nicotine patches or lozenges with tea leaves ('teabacco'). Among a sample of people recently released from smoke-free prisons in Queensland, Australia, the aims of this study were to explore the perceived popularity of teabacco use, motivations for its use and describe the process of creating teabacco to identify potential associated health risks.
DESIGN AND METHODS: This study used a mixed-methods design. Eighty

INTRODUCTION: Comprehensive clean air policies reduce exposure to secondhand tobacco and cannabis smoke, as well as nicotine aerosols, and improve health outcomes. However, these policies often do not apply to the eight million residents of multiunit affordable housing, many of whom are from minoritized populations. One strategy to promote smoke-free living environments is to increase the voluntary adoption of no-smoking rules in the home.
METHODS: We describe the protocol for the Healthy Homes study-a wait-list cluster randomized controlled trial of a smoke-free home intervention for afforda

INTRODUCTION: Article 8 of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control mandates all signatory countries to "protect citizens from exposure to tobacco smoke in workplaces, public transport and indoor public places." Even though there has been great progress in the implementation of Article 8, still most of the world population remains exposed to secondhand smoke (SHS). In this article, we sought to summarize the research that supports Article 8, where do we stand, and current research gaps and future directions.
DISCUSSION: Secondhand smoke is an established cause of heart disease and several

BACKGROUND: Ethiopia has made significant strides in adopting comprehensive smoke-free laws aligned with the World Health Organization's Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, which mandates that all public places, including hospitality venues, public transportation, and workplaces, be 100% smoke-free. However, effective implementation across regions remains uneven. This study examines the barriers and facilitators influencing the enforcement of smoke-free legislation in Ethiopia.
METHODS: This qualitative study was conducted in 10 major cities in Ethiopia, involving 41 key informant interv

INTRODUCTION: The present study examined the reduction in exposure to tobacco smoke in German hospitality venues following the implementation of a partial smoking ban by measuring the indoor air concentration of PM(2.5) in 2005 and 2009, that is, before and after the legislation was implemented.
METHODS: The concentration of respirable suspended particles (PM(2.5)) in the indoor air of German hospitality venues was measured using a laser photometer (AM510). The prelegislation sample from 2005 included 80 venues of which 58 could be revisited in 2009. After replenishment, the postlegislation s

A California-sponsored, 18-month, tobacco-free intervention in residential substance use disorder (SUD) programs was associated with increases in tobacco-free grounds and tobacco-related client services. The current study examined whether positive results would be replicated in 11 programs participating subsequently. Program directors (N = 11) completed surveys of tobacco-related policies pre- and post-intervention. Pre- (n = 163) and post-intervention (n = 128) cross-sectional staff surveys examined tobacco-related training, beliefs, practices, smoking policy, and smoking status. Directors re

Tobacco smoking and smoke exposure during pregnancy are associated with a range of adverse health outcomes, including preterm birth. Also, children born preterm have a higher risk of complications including bronchopulmonary dysplasia and asthma when their mothers smoked during pregnancy. Smoking cessation in early pregnancy can help reduce the adverse impact on offspring health. Counselling interventions are effective in promoting smoking cessation and reducing the incidence of preterm birth. Peer support and incentive-based approaches are likely to be of additional benefit, whereas the effect

OBJECTIVES: Recently, New York City and New York State increased cigarette excise taxes and New York City implemented a smoke-free workplace law. To assess the impact of these policies on smoking cessation in New York City, we examined over-the-counter sales of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) products.
METHODS: Pharmacy sales data were collected in real time as part of nontraditional surveillance activities. We used Poisson generalized estimating equations to analyze the effect of smoking-related policies on pharmacy-specific weekly sales of nicotine patches and gum. We assessed effect mod

The use of electronic nicotine delivery systems, such as e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products (HTPs), is increasing, but knowledge of their short and long-term toxicological effects remains limited. Here, aerosols generated from an e-cigarette using a flavour-free e-liquid base, both with and without nicotine, an HTP, and a conventional cigarette were characterised for the production of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), carbonyls and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Furthermore, extracts from vapour and smoke were generated, and their acute toxicity was assessed in human lung epit

OBJECTIVES: Little is known about the perspectives of staff working in prisons where e-cigarettes are permitted. Scotland now permits people in custody (PiC), but not staff/visitors to use e-cigarettes, following implementation of smoke-free prisons policy in 2018. Previous studies, conducted before and immediately after the introduction of e-cigarettes in Scottish prisons, have evidenced stakeholder support for their use by PiC. This study focuses on key challenges associated with e-cigarette use in prisons, using data collected from prison staff once e-cigarettes had been allowed in a smoke-

BACKGROUND: High levels of smoking among people who experience imprisonment contribute to their high mortality and morbidity rates and to inequalities. Scotland's prisons became smokefree in 2018. However, questions remain about how to prevent high relapse to smoking post release.
OBJECTIVES: Summarise evidence on supporting people to reduce tobacco-related harms post release. Understand experiences, opportunities and challenges for reducing tobacco-related harms for people leaving smokefree prisons and for families. Feasibility test a household-targeted intervention to support people release

INTRODUCTION: In 2011, the Spanish partial smoke-free legislation was extended to affect all enclosed settings, including hospitality venues and selected outdoor areas. This study evaluated the change in self-reported exposure to secondhand smoke among the adult, nonsmoking population.
METHODS: Two cross-sectional surveys were conducted on nationally representative samples of the adult (≥18 years) nonsmoking Spanish population. One was conducted in 2006 (6 months after the first ban) and the other in 2011, 6 months after the new ban was implemented. We assessed the prevalence and 95% confiden

BACKGROUND: Hyogo Prefecture has managed smoking ban legislation with partial restrictions in public places (Hyogo-L) since 2013. Previous studies have reported a significant decrease in admissions for acute coronary syndrome (ACS) in Kobe-city, but not in other districts of Hyogo Prefecture in the 2 years after Hyogo-L. The aim of the present study was to define the long-term effect of Hyogo-L.
METHODS AND RESULTS: The JROAD-DPC dataset was used to collect information on the number of hospitalizations for ACS in Hyogo Prefecture, and in Osaka-city without smoking ban legislation, from April

We investigated whether changes in perinatal outcomes occurred following introduction of key tobacco control policies in the Netherlands: smoke-free legislation in workplaces plus a tobacco tax increase and mass media campaign (January-February 2004); and extension of the smoke-free law to the hospitality industry, accompanied by another tax increase and mass media campaign (July 2008). This was a national quasi-experimental study using Netherlands Perinatal Registry data (2000-2011; registration: ClinicalTrials.gov NCT02189265). Primary outcome measures were: perinatal mortality, preterm birt
