Neurological manifestations in speech after snake bite: a rare case.

The patient was admitted after reporting a snake bite from which he later developed neurological signs and symptoms among which a flaccid dysarthria. The patient underwent speech therapy and showed significant improvement over a short period of time. The favorable outcome of the present study highlights the role of speech therapy in such a case, where it often remains un-emphasized.

Guillain-Barré syndrome following snake bite: An unusual complication.

A 40-year-old man presented with a nonhealing wound on the left ankle for the last 5 weeks, a tingling sensation in both hands for 20 days, and weakness in all four limbs for 10 days. He had been bitten by a snake while working in a sugarcane field 6 weeks earlier and had received tetanus toxoid and anti-snake venom on the day of the bite. He had clinical, biochemical, and electrophysiological features of Guillain-Barré syndrome, with motor and sensory neuropathy-primarily suggestive of demyelination with secondary axonal degeneration. Recognition of this unusual complication following snake b

[Snake bite by Philodryas chamissonis. A case presentation and literature review].

There are two species of snakes associated with snake bite poisoning in Chile: Philodryas chamissonis and Tachymenis peruviana. A case associated with a P. chamissonis bite occurring during a summer activity in San Antonio, V Region, is presented. The bite compromised the dorsum of the right hand between the thumb and the index finger and was initially painless. During the following 24 hours equimotic edema developed up to the shoulder and pectoral region, with intense pain, headache, nausea, fever and appearance of a serohematic bulla on the elbow fold. The patient was treated with antihistam

Snake bite by Cerastes vipera in children: report of two cases.

Two children, ages 2 and 4 years, envenomed by the snake Cerastes vipera are presented. Both children suffered from local pain and swelling of the hand that spread up to the shoulder in the 2-year-old and up to the elbow in the 4-year-old. A hemorrhagic blister was noted on the bitten finger in the younger patient. Urinary retention, tachycardia, and a slight prolongation of prothrombin time was noted in the 2-year-old, whereas hypertension and fever were observed in the 4-year-old. In both cases, the swelling receded gradually and the patients were discharged from the hospital after several d

A national hospital-based survey of snakes responsible for bites in Thailand.

Snakes which had been killed and brought to hospital with the patients they had bitten were collected in 80 district and provincial hospitals throughout 67 provinces in Thailand in order to establish the geographical distribution and relative medical importance of the venomous species. Of the 1631 snakes collected, 1145 were venomous: Malayan pit vipers (Calloselasma rhodostoma), green pit vipers (Trimeresurus albolabris) and Russell's vipers (Daboia russelii) were the most numerous, while T. albolabris, C. rhodostoma and spitting cobras ('Naja atra') were the most widely distributed. Clinical experience in the therapy of bites from exotic snakes in Berlin.

Since there are nearly no indigenous poisonous snakes in Germany, snake bites by poisonous snakes are rare. Most serious snake bites reported to poison information centres or treated at hospitals are caused by exotic snakes that are kept in private households. Only few types of antivenom are stored in emergency depots in Germany including polyvalent antivenoms from commercial sources. Since experience with the treatment of poisonous snake bites is limited, the records of the Intensive Care Unit and the Poison Information Centre of the Universitätsklinikum Rudolf Virchow from 1980-1991 were eva

Snake bite in Australia--the problems involved and a protocol for hospital management.

Despite a great deal of original research into Australian snakes and their complex venoms, there is still confusion about the correct first-aid and hospital management of the bitten patient. This review illustrates the difficulties in diagnosis and treatment and presents a well tried protocol for the successful management of snake bite.

Snake bites in Zimbabwe: a clinical study with emphasis on the need for antivenom.

A retrospective analysis of 83 consecutive patients (42 males and 41 females) treated for snake bites at Mpilo Central Hospital between January 1990 and June 1992 is presented. In Zimbabwe poisonous snakes belong to four families; Colubrids (Boomslang), Vipers (Puff Adder), Elapids (Mambas and Cobras) and Atractaspids (Bibron Stilleto snake). The Puff Adder is responsible for three quarters of the bites. Forty eight pc (40/83) of the patients were below 20 years of age (range 1 year 10 months to 72 years). Most bites occurred at night (61 pc) in the rainy season (November to April). The majori

[Australian method of first aid for European snake bites. Spreading its use in Italy].

Antiquated first-aid procedures, such as the incision and sucking of the wound and the application of a tourniquet, are still used in Italy consequent to the bite of vipers. The A. hope that such procedures will be finally abandoned, since they are ineffective, impractical, painful and can furthermore produce invalidating or disfiguring permanent outcomes. In this report they extensively describe Australian first-aid measures consequent to snakebites, constituted by a compressive bandage and by immobilization of the bitten limb by splinting. They hope therefore that the divulgation of this pro

Risks to infants on Guam from bites of the brown tree snake (Boiga irregularis).

The brown tree snake, Boiga irregularis, is abundant on Guam and commonly invades human habitations. Data on emergency room visits on Guam document a high frequency of snakebites on Guam. Over 50% of the emergency room visits for snakebite involved children less than 4 years old. Records exist of 4 infants, 1, 2, 5, and 10 months old, who displayed significant symptoms after being bitten, while sleeping, by snakes. Two infants developed respiratory problems within a few hours and required medical treatment for asphyxiation. Lethargy, diminished sensory perceptions, drooping eyelids, swelling,

Ventricular arrhythmias induced by snake bite in a horse: A case report.

A Mangalarga Marchador mare was referred to treatment with a history of poisoning with evident tachyarrhythmia detected on cardiac auscultation. The electrocardiogram was performed and detected occurrences of paroxysmal monomorphic ventricular bigeminy (pMVB), pMVB with pairs of premature ventricular contractions (PVC) (pMVBPC), and paroxysmal monomorphic ventricular tachycardia (pMVT). In all cases, incomplete atrioventricular dissociation and coupling variation are observed. These characteristics, associated with non-reduction of successive subsequent coupling intervals and the absence of ty

Ethnomedicinal breakthroughs in snake bite therapy: From folklore to forefront.

Snakebite envenomation is a critical public health issue, especially in tropical regions like India, resulting in significant morbidity and mortality. This review explores the potential of ethnomedicinal herbs as adjunct therapies to conventional antivenoms, addressing challenges such as the high cost, limited availability, and side effects of traditional antivenoms. The study emphasizes regional and species-specific variations in snake venom that complicate antivenom development and highlights the pharmacological potential of certain medicinal plants in mitigating venom effects. These plants

A review of bites by non-front-fanged snakes (NFFS) of Europe.

Non-front-fanged snakes (NFFS) have long been overlooked by snake venom research, likely due to most of them being considered non-medically relevant for humans. The paucity of information about composition and activities of NFFS venoms and oral secretions makes it difficult to assess whether a given species can inflict medically significant bites. Here, we provide a review of the information currently available about the symptoms/signs elicited by bites from European NFFS, aiming to offer a foundation for understanding the threat they pose in terms of snakebite. Despite an overall limited amou

Persistent fibrinogen deficiency after snake bite: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Venom-induced consumption coagulopathy (VICC) is characterized by coagulation dysfunction accompanied by decreased coagulation factor activity and fibrinogen (FBG) concentrations. We report a patient with VICC caused by snake bite who manifested persistent FBG deficiency without abnormal coagulation factor activity. This information may be helpful in diagnosing and treating VICC. CASE SUMMARY: A 49-year-old man who had been bitten by a snake 13 h previously was admitted to the Emergency Department of our hospital with visible swelling of a finger and a bleeding puncture site. A study of clinical profile of snake bite at a tertiary care centre.

BACKGROUND: Snake bite is an important occupational and rural hazard because India has always been a land of Exotic snakes. In Maharashtra, common poisonous snakes are Cobra, Russell's Viper, Saw Scaled Viper, and Krait. It is a fact that inspite of heavy morbidity and mortality, very little attention is paid by the clinicians to this occupational hazard. AIMS: To study the prevalence of poisonous and non-poisonous snake bites in part of Western Maharashtra with reference to age, sex, occupation, part of body bitten, time of bite and seasonal variation, and the types of poisonous snakes commo

TOXICOLOGY AND TREATMENT: MEDICAL AUTHORITIES AND SNAKE-BITE IN THE MIDDLE AGES.

By end of the thirteenth century, surgeons and university-trained physicians in Western Europe had a plethora of authorities from the Greco-Roman and Arabic tradition from which to consult for the treatment of snake-bites. Venomous animals receive the largest share of attention in the literature on biting animals. Nearly all of the sources focus on the idea of the animal biting or puncturing the skin's surface with their mouths and few poisonous animals where the venom is passed on through the skin or hairs are mentioned. Venomous animals frequently appear in discussions on poisons in general,

Neurological effects of venomous bites and stings: snakes, spiders, and scorpions.

Snake and spider bites, as well as scorpion sting envenoming, are neglected diseases affecting millions of people all over the world. Neurological complications vary according to the offending animal, and are often directly related to toxic effects of the venom, affecting the central nervous system, the neuromuscular transmission, the cardiovascular system, or the coagulation cascade. Snake bite envenoming may result in stroke or muscle paralysis. Metalloproteinases and other substances (common in vipers and colubrids) have anticoagulant or procoagulant activity, and may induce ischemic or hem
