Snoring: analysis, measurement, clinical implications and applications.

Snoring was described in literature even before medicine. Common definitions do not consider acoustic measurements of snoring. In this paper we discuss the main pathophysiological aspects of snoring and the snoring-sleep relationship as the generating mechanisms. Snoring can be analysed and measured by the following methods: 1) Leq-Equivalent Continuous Sound Level, which only quantifies noisiness, annoyance, and damage to the partner's and snorer's hearing; 2) Power Spectrum, with frequency values, formantic structure data and typical shape, which can help to distinguish simple snoring from h

Ischaemic stroke, snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea.

Ischaemic stroke occurs most often during the morning hours before noon. In recent studies the peak time of onset has been between 10.00 and 12.00 hours. Snoring every night or almost every night (habitual snoring) is in relation with ischaemic stroke. Snoring occasionally, on the contrary, is not significantly related with stroke. Habitual snoring is the most typical sign of obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome and it is strongly associated with being overweight. Other possible pathophysiological factors that are in relation with habitual snoring, obstructive sleep apnoea and stroke include arte

Blood pressure, snoring, obesity, and nocturnal hypoxaemia.

The association between snoring and blood pressure is still a matter for debate, partly because of uncertainty about the definition of snoring and partly because confounding factors may affect systemic blood pressure such as obesity, sleep apnoea, and nocturnal hypoxaemia. To isolate the contribution of each of these factors, 1415 patients (389 females, 1026 males) referred to a sleep disorders centre were studied. A full history was obtained with particular attention to cardiovascular disease and medications. The patients had nocturnal polysomnography including objective measurement of snorin

Nasal pressure recordings for automatic snoring detection.

This study presents a rule-based method for automated, real-time snoring detection using nasal pressure recordings during overnight sleep. Although nasal pressure recordings provide information regarding nocturnal breathing abnormalities in a polysomnography (PSG) study or continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) system, an objective assessment of snoring detection using these nasal pressure recordings has not yet been reported in the literature. Nasal pressure recordings were obtained from 55 patients with obstructive sleep apnea. The PSG data were also recorded simultaneously to evaluate t

Surgical treatment of snoring & obstructive sleep apnoea.

Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) syndrome is a potentially serious disorder affecting millions of people around the world. Many of these individuals are undiagnosed while those who are diagnosed, often exhibit poor compliance with nightly use of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), a very effective nonsurgical treatment. Various surgical procedures have been proposed to manage and, in some cases, treat OSA. In this article we review methods used to assess the sites of obstruction and a number of surgical procedures designed to address OSA. Effective surgical management of OSA depends upon

Reported snoring--does validity differ by age?

Snoring is a major sign of obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome. Despite the frequent number of studies based on subjective reports of snoring, self-reported snoring has hardly been validated at all. In some previous epidemiological studies, a significant association between snoring and cardiovascular morbidity and mortality was found only below the age of 50-60 y. This study was performed to investigate whether this is due to a decrease in the validity of reported snoring with increasing age. In a population-based study, 2668 men aged 40-79 y answered a questionnaire including questions on snori

Comparison of the pharyngeal airway in snoring and non-snoring patients based on the lateral cephalometric study: A case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Normal airways are a key factor during the craniofacial growth of the young. Therefore, sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) without treatment can have harmful consequences for development and health. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the cephalometric characteristics in non-snoring individuals and snoring subjects, and investigate differences in the pharyngeal airway space between the 2 groups. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This case-control study included 70 patients aged over 18 years, selected from a radiology center. The patients were divided into 2 groups: case (35 patients with

Snoring toddlers with and without obstructive sleep apnoea differed with regard to snoring time, adenoid size and mouth breathing.

AIM: The difficulty of assessing the likelihood of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) in children who snore without full-night polysomnography is widely recognised. Our aim was to identify features that were characteristic of two-year-old children with OSA and evaluate whether this information could be used to assess the likelihood of OSA. METHODS: The study was carried out as part of the Child-Sleep Project, a longitudinal birth cohort study of children born at Tampere University Hospital, Finland. This part of the study focused on the children in the cohort who snored and was carried out betwee

Comparative effects of snoring sound between two minimally invasive surgeries in the treatment of snoring: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive surgeries of the soft palate have emerged as a less-invasive treatment for habitual snoring. To date, there is only limited information available comparing the effects of snoring sound between different minimally invasive surgeries in the treatment of habitual snoring. OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy of palatal implant and radiofrequency surgery, in the reduction of snoring through subjective evaluation of snoring and objective snoring sound analysis. PATIENTS AND METHOD: Thirty patients with habitual snoring due to palatal obstruction (apnea-hypopnea index

Beyond Snoring: Unexpected Presentation of Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a common yet often underdiagnosed sleep-related breathing disorder characterized by recurrent upper airway obstruction during sleep. We present a case of a 24-year-old, non-obese male patient with severe OSAS who exhibited an atypical clinical picture dominated by long-standing fatigue, poor concentration, and digital clubbing. Diagnostic evaluation included polysomnography, which confirmed severe OSAS, and ancillary testing to exclude pulmonary, cardiac, and gastrointestinal causes of clubbing. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy led t

Cognitive and Behavioral Outcomes of Snoring Among Adolescents.

IMPORTANCE: Snoring is central to sleep-disordered breathing (SDB), which arises from nocturnal upper airway resistance. Habitual snoring is associated with cognitive and behavioral problems in young children, but less is known about these associations in adolescents. OBJECTIVE: To assess the longitudinal associations of snoring with cognition and problem behaviors among adolescents. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study was a secondary analysis of the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study dataset (release 5.0), which enrolled 11 875 children and a parent or care

Simple snoring: not quite so simple after all?

Simple snoring (SS), in the absence of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), is a common problem, yet our understanding of its causes and consequences is incomplete. Our understanding is blurred by the lack of consistency in the definition of snoring, methods of assessment, and degree of concomitant complaints. Further, it remains contentious whether SS is independently associated with daytime sleepiness, or adverse health outcomes including cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome. Regardless of this lack of clarity, it is likely that SS exists on one end of a continuum, with OSA at its polar

Snoring-induced nerve lesions in the upper airway.

The prevalence of habitual snoring is extremely high in the general population, and is reported to be roughly 40% in men and 20% in women. The low-frequency vibrations of snoring may cause physical trauma and, more specifically, peripheral nerve injuries, just as jobs which require workers to use vibrating tools over the course of many years result in local nerve lesions in the hands. Histopathological analysis of upper airway (UA) muscles have shown strong evidence of a varying severity of neurological lesions in groups of snoring patients. Neurophysiological assessment shows evidence of acti
