Family attitudes and patient social adjustment in a longitudinal study of outpatient schizophrenics receiving low-dose neuroleptics: the family's view.

Adverse effects of neuroleptic medication have led to the attempt to develop alternative strategies for the treatment of schizophrenia, but it is generally conceded that these strategies may have their own negative outcomes in the form of symptom exacerbation, reduced social performance and worsened family interactions. This paper examines the effect of one such strategy, low doses of medication, on the social adjustment of and family response to chronic schizophrenic outpatients. Patients who were randomly assigned to either a low-dose or standard-dose condition were rated by their families o

The Impact of Mental Interventions on Psychological Adjustment and Social Recovery in Patients With Oral and Maxillofacial Tumors: A Scoping Review.

OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aims to comprehensively evaluate psychological intervention strategies for patients undergoing surgical treatment for oral and maxillofacial tumors. By assessing the effectiveness of existing strategies and the theoretical models or behavior change techniques employed, the study seeks to provide evidence-based recommendations for designing targeted psychological intervention programs. METHODS: The review adheres to the methodological framework of Arksey and O'Malley and incorporates guidance from the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) for scoping reviews. A systemati

Dominance hierarchies and social status ascent opportunity: anticipatory behavioral and physiological adjustments in a Neotropical cichlid fish.

In this work we characterized the social hierarchy of non-reproductive individuals of Cichlasoma dimerus (Heckel, 1840), independently for both sexes, and its relationship to the opportunity for social status ascent. Female and male individuals who were located on the top rank of the social hierarchy, ascended in social status when the opportunity arose, therefore indicating that dominance is directly correlated with social ascent likelihood. Dominance was positively correlated with size in males but not in females, suggesting for the latter a relationship with intrinsic features such as aggre

The impact of parent-child relationship on adolescent social adjustment following childhood abuse: the moderation of the serotonergic multilocus genetic variation.

INTRODUCTION: Childhood adverse experiences appear to increase sensitivity to stress, potentially influencing lifelong social adjustment. Previous studies suggest that serotonergic multilocus genetic variation moderates the relationship between environmental factors and social adjustment. METHODS: This study investigated an adolescent sample (mean age 14.15 ± 0.63 years; N = 700), using theory-driven multilocus genetic profile scores (MGPS) to measure serotonergic multilocus genetic variation. Leveraging longitudinal data, we examined the interactions between serotonergic MGPS, childhood abus

The Correlations between Childhood Trauma, Sense of Coherence, and Social Adjustment: The Moderating Role of Emotional Schemas in At-Risk Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD) are vulnerable to reduced bone mineral density (BMD), largely due to limited physical activity and diminished mechanical loading on the skeleton. The present study investigated the individual and combined impacts of calcium supplementation and weight-bearing exercise on femoral neck bone mineral density in children with developmental coordination disorder. METHODS: This was a quasi-experimental study with a pre-test-post-test design and a control group. The study was conducted in Yasouj, Iran between January and September 202

Managing the Concealable Stigma of Criminal Justice System Involvement: A Longitudinal Examination of Anticipated Stigma, Social Withdrawal, and Post-Release Adjustment.

People with concealable stigmatized identities, such as a criminal record, often anticipate stigma from others. Anticipated stigma is thought to cause withdrawal from situations in which there is the potential for discrimination, which then negatively impacts behavior and functioning. This may have implications for offenders reentering the community, possibly hindering community integration and encouraging maladaptive behavior postrelease. Drawing upon a sample of 197 male jail inmates, we examine a theoretical model in which anticipated stigma during incarceration predicts behavioral outcomes

Brain volumetric variability and artificial intelligence diagnosis: Importance of race/ethnicity-specific reference standards and social determinant adjustment. A scoping review.

Neuroimaging techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are routinely used in diagnostic radiology to evaluate brain changes associated with neurological and psychiatric conditions. Evidence suggests that imaging biomarkers predict clinical outcomes with varying accuracy across ethnic groups. Underrepresentation of ethnic diversity in neuroimaging research may result in generalization bias, whereby findings derived from one population are inaccurately applied to others. A scoping review methodology was employed to systematically identify and analyze relevant literature. Searches were

Study on the influence of trauma-informed music intervention on emotional adjustment and social adaptability of children exposed to pediatric trauma.

BACKGROUND: Children exposed to traumatic events frequently develop emotion dysregulation and impaired social adaptation, which severely impairs their psychosocial development. As a non-invasive, well-tolerated psychological intervention, trauma-informed music intervention yields promising therapeutic gains for traumatized children's emotional and social functioning. Nevertheless, high-quality quantitative clinical trials remain lacking to corroborate its clinical efficacy. METHODS: This randomized controlled trial recruited 120 trauma-exposed children hospitalized in our institution between

Utility of the Work and Social Adjustment Scale (WSAS) in predicting long-term sick-leave in Danish patients with emotional disorders.

BACKGROUND: The Work and Social Adjustment Scale (WSAS) is a self-administered measure designed to assess the level of inability to function socially as a consequence of a defined problem or disorder. METHODS: A total of 230 patients with emotional disorders completed the Danish translation of the WSAS, measures of anxiety and depression, the Level of Personality Functioning Brief Form, the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 Short Form, and the World Health Organization Five-Item Well-Being Index (WHO-5). We conducted a confirmatory factor analysis of the previously suggested factor structure of

Means-ends problem-solving skills, life stress, and social support as mediators of adjustment in the normative transition to high school.

Examined the transition of adolescents from middle school to high school through a longitudinal research design. Consistent with other studies, results indicate that the transition is associated with declines in grade point average and attendance, and that these changes persist or worsen over the course of the freshman year. Life stress and social support from family, friends, and school personnel each showed expected relationships with some outcome variables, though these varied in pattern and magnitude. Furthermore, there was some indication that these sources could be used in multivariate a

Behavioral adjustment of siblings of children with autism engaged in applied behavior analysis early intervention programs: the moderating role of social support.

There have been few studies of the impact of intensive home-based early applied behavior analysis (ABA) intervention for children with autism on family functioning. In the present study, behavioral adjustment was explored in 78 siblings of children with autism on ABA programs. First, mothers' ratings of sibling adjustment were compared to a normative sample. There were no reported increases in behavioral adjustment problems in the present sample. Second, regression analyses revealed that social support functioned as a moderator of the impact of autism severity on sibling adjustment rather than

The Work and Social Adjustment Scale, Youth and Parent Versions: Psychometric Evaluation of a Brief Measure of Functional Impairment in Young People.

The Work and Social Adjustment Scale (WSAS) is a brief global measure of functional impairment that is widely used in adult health. We have adapted the WSAS for its use in youth, the WSAS-Youth version (WSAS-Y) and WSAS-Parent version (WSAS-P). This study evaluated the psychometric properties of the scale. The internal consistency, factor structure, convergent and divergent validity, test-retest reliability and sensitivity to change of the WSAS-Y/P were studied in 525 children and adolescents with obsessive-compulsive disorder and related disorders receiving treatment. The internal consistency

Emotional adjustment among parents of adolescents and young adults with cancer: the influence of social constraints on cognitive processing and fear of recurrence.

Parents of adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with cancer experience distress comparable to other caregiver populations, but remain understudied. This study tested the social cognitive processing model of emotional adjustment to cancer. We hypothesized that social constraints on emotional disclosure would inhibit cognitive processing and be related to greater fear of cancer recurrence (FCR), potentially negatively influencing psychological adjustment. Data were collected through an online cross-sectional survey study of 66 parents of AYAs with cancer (aged 15-39) and analyzed using bootstrapp
