Long-term cost-effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy versus psychodynamic therapy in social anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: To determine the cost-effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) versus psychodynamic therapy (PDT) in the treatment of social anxiety disorder after a follow-up of 30 months from a societal perspective. METHODS: This analysis was conducted alongside the multicenter SOPHO-NET trial; adults with a primary diagnosis of social anxiety disorder received CBT (n = 209) or PDT (n = 207). Data on health care utilization and productivity loss were collected at baseline, after 6 months (posttreatment), and three further follow-ups to calculate direct and indirect costs. Anxiety-fre

Working alliance and competence as predictors of outcome in cognitive behavioral therapy for social anxiety and panic disorder in adults.

OBJECTIVE: The research on the association between the working alliance and therapist competence/adherence and outcome from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is limited and characterized by inconclusive findings. This study investigates the working alliance and competence/adherence as predictors of outcome of CBT for social anxiety disorder (SAD) and panic disorder (PD). METHOD: Eighty-two clinically referred patients (58.5% female; age: M = 33.6 years, SD = 10.3) with PD (n = 31) or SAD (n = 51) were treated with 12 sessions of manualized CBT by 22 clinicians with limited CBT experience in

Psychodynamic psychotherapy versus cognitive behavior therapy for social anxiety disorder: an efficacy and partial effectiveness trial.

OBJECTIVES: Comparing the overall and differential effects of psychodynamic psychotherapy (PDT) versus cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) for social anxiety disorder (SAD). DESIGN: Patients with a primary SAD (N = 47) were randomly assigned to PDT (N = 22) or CBT (N = 27). Both PDT and CBT consisted of up to 36 sessions (average PDT 31.4 and CBT 19.8 sessions). Assessments took place at waitlist: pretest, after 12 and 24 weeks for those who received longer treatment: posttest, 3-month and 1-year follow-up. METHODS: Changes in the main outcome measure self-reported social anxiety composite, as

Is there any influence of personality disorder on the short term intensive group cognitive behavioral therapy of social phobia?

BACKGROUND: The treatment of personality disorder is repeatedly reported as less successful than the treatment of patients without personality disorder. Most clinicians believe that anxiety disorder in tandem with a personality disorder often leads to longer treatment, worsens the prognosis, and thus increases treatment costs. Our study was designed to compare the short-term effectiveness of therapy in patients suffering from social phobia with and without personality disorder. METHOD: The specific aim of the study was to assess the efficacy of a 6 week therapeutic program designed for social

Effects of water exercise swimming program on aquatic skills and social behaviors in children with autism spectrum disorders.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of a 10 week water exercise swimming program (WESP) on the aquatic skills and social behaviors of 16 boys with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). In the first 10 week phase (phase I), eight children (group A) received the WESP while eight children (group B) did not. A second 10 week phase (phase II) immediately followed, with the treatments reversed. Both groups continued their regular treatment/ activity throughout the study. Improvements were seen in aquatic skills for both groups subsequent to the WESP. Following phase I, significa

Motivation enhancement therapy can increase utilization of cognitive-behavioral therapy: the case of social anxiety disorder.

Despite the documented efficacy of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for many psychological disorders, the vast majority of suffering people do not receive treatment. Treatment underutilization may prove at least partially due to ambivalence about seeking treatment. Ambivalence could result if, for example, people with social anxiety disorder (SAD) want to decrease their anxiety symptoms but are worried they will be judged negatively should they seek treatment. Motivation enhancement therapy (MET) can be a useful tool to help non-treatment seekers explore and resolve ambivalence regarding see

Physical, mental, and social catastrophic cognitions as prognostic factors in cognitive-behavioral and pharmacological treatments for panic disorder.

The authors explored the prognostic value of 3 different types of catastrophic cognitions in the treatment of panic disorder with and without mild-to-moderate agoraphobia using a sample of 143 participants who received either cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) or imipramine in a randomized controlled trial. Stronger fears of social catastrophes both prior to and following treatment with CBT or imipramine were associated with a poorer outcome. In contrast, cognitions involving physical or mental catastrophes were unrelated to outcome, regardless of whether these thoughts were measured prior to

Effects of nutritional supplementation on social impairment and behavioral dysregulation in autism spectrum disorder: a network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by core deficits in social interaction, often accompanied by behavioral challenges such as irritability and hyperactivity. In recent years, various nutritional supplements have been employed to alleviate ASD-related symptoms, yet the relative efficacy of different interventions remains unclear. This study employs network meta-analysis to compare the effects of distinct nutritional supplementation strategies on impaired social functioning and behavioral disorders in ASD. METHODS: Systematically searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science,

Atypical Social Behavior is Predicted by Overconnectivity Between Salience and Default Mode Networks in Autism Spectrum Disorder.

As Default Mode and Salience networks (DMN, SN) contribute to social behavior and switching between inner and outer attention, they are believed to function and develop differently in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). However, it remains unclear what alterations of their interactivity are connected to certain autistic traits and how age influences these networks' maturing. Behavioral (social responsiveness, executive functions and communication skills) and resting-state functional connectivity (FC) data from the Autism Brain Imaging Data Exchange were analyzed comprising individ

Social and behavioral correlates of sleep health among adults receiving medication treatment for opioid use disorder.

OBJECTIVES: Opioid use disorder (OUD) and its treatment (MOUD) are associated with altered sleep health. The purposes are to (1) describe profiles of sleep health among adults using medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) and (2) examine the associations between multi-level individual, family, neighborhood, and social characteristics and sleep profiles. We hypothesized that poor quality of life, adverse life experiences, addiction behavior, dysfunctional family and social interactions, and negative neighborhood characteristics are associated with negative profiles of sleep health. METHODS:

Efficacy of Behavioral Experiments in Cognitive Therapy for Social Anxiety Disorder: Study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: While the efficacy of cognitive therapy (CT) has been well established for social anxiety disorder (SAD) in several randomized controlled trials, there are still large differences between trials with respect to effect sizes. The present study investigates the question of whether enhanced training and the use of behavioral experiments (BEs) increases the efficacy of traditional CT, based on verbal methods of cognitive restructuring. METHODS/DESIGN: A mixed within/between conditions design will be applied, with therapists and patients being randomly allocated to one of two condition

The Mechanisms Underlying Changes in Broad Dimensions of Psychopathology During Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Social Anxiety Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) patients commonly have broad dimensions of psychopathology. This study investigated the relationship between a wide range of psychopathology and attention or cognitions during cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for SAD. METHODS: We treated 96 SAD patients with group CBT. Using multiple regression analysis, we examined the associations between the changes in broad dimensions of psychopathology and the changes in self-focused attention or maladaptive cognitions in the course of CBT. RESULTS: The reduction in self-focused attention was related to the de

A false sense of security: safety behaviors erode objective speech performance in individuals with social anxiety disorder.

In the current study, 55 participants with a diagnosis of generalized social anxiety disorder (SAD), 23 participants with a diagnosis of an anxiety disorder other than SAD with no comorbid SAD, and 50 healthy controls completed a speech task as well as self-reported measures of safety behavior use. Speeches were videotaped and coded for global and specific indicators of performance by two raters who were blind to participants' diagnostic status. Results suggested that the objective performance of people with SAD was poorer than that of both control groups, who did not differ from each other. M

Clinical and genetic outcome determinants of Internet- and group-based cognitive behavior therapy for social anxiety disorder.

OBJECTIVE: No study has investigated clinical or genetic predictors and moderators of Internet-based cognitive behavior therapy (ICBT) compared with cognitive behavioral group therapy for (CBGT) for SAD. Identification of predictors and moderators is essential to the clinician in deciding which treatment to recommend for whom. We aimed to identify clinical and genetic (5-HTTLPR, COMTval158met, and BDNFval66met) predictors and moderators of ICBT and CBGT. METHOD: We performed three types of analyses on data from a sample comprising participants (N = 126) who had undergone ICBT or CBGT in a ran

Behavioral avoidance mediates the relationship between anxiety and depressive symptoms among social anxiety disorder patients.

This study investigated the relationship between social anxiety, depressive symptoms, and behavioral avoidance among adult patients with Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD). Epidemiological literature shows SAD is the most common comorbid disorder associated with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), though the relationship between these disorders has not been investigated. In most cases, SAD onset precedes MDD, suggesting symptoms associated with SAD might lead to depression in some people. The present study addressed this question by investigating the mediational role of behavioral avoidance in this cl

Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Social Anxiety Disorder, but Not Panic Anxiety Disorder, Are Associated with Higher Sensitivity to Learning from Negative Feedback: Behavioral and Computational Investigation.

Anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety disorder (SAD), and panic anxiety disorder (PAD), are a group of common psychiatric conditions. They are characterized by excessive worrying, uneasiness, and fear of future events, such that they affect social and occupational functioning. Anxiety disorders can alter behavior and cognition as well, yet little is known about the particular domains they affect. In this study, we tested the cognitive correlates of medication-free patients with GAD, SAD, and PAD, along with matched healthy participants using a probabil
