OBJECTIVE: To determine the role of social comparison for body dissatisfaction in bulimia nervosa (BN). Previous research suggested that exposure to media content idealizing thin body shape decreases body satisfaction, particularly in women with eating disorder symptoms. This might be due to the negative outcome of social comparisons with media models, and women with eating disorders might be particularly susceptible because they engage in upward social comparison more frequently than women without these symptoms. However, no study has yet explored both upward (i.e., toward more attractive oth

BACKGROUND: Paediatric social anxiety disorder (SoAD) responds poorly to treatment. Improved understanding of potential psychological maintaining processes may indicate fruitful directions to improve treatment outcomes. The current study compared self-reported psychological processes and state anxiety in response to two social tasks experienced by children and adolescents with SoAD against comparison samples.
METHODS: 641 children and adolescents aged 6-17 years (Mage = 9.45 yr; 47.6% girls) engaged in a brief, impromptu speech and a social discussion with a confederate. Participants included

People usually evaluate themselves in comparison to others, and this can occur in three directions. Upward comparisons occur when comparing oneself to a superior person, parallel comparisons occur when comparing oneself to a similar person, and downward comparisons occur when comparing oneself to an inferior person. The present study explores how social comparison influences individual decision-making and the associated neural mechanisms within gain/loss frames. Using a two-option gambling task, we created an ecologically valid social comparison scenario, implicitly manipulating the three comp

Behavioural studies have shown that social comparison between oneself and opponents influences certain prosocial behaviours such as helping and cooperation behaviours towards opponents. However, it is uncertain whether social comparison affects other prosocial behaviours. More importantly, no studies have directly investigated whether social comparison affects antisocial behaviours towards opponents or neural mechanisms underlying both prosocial and antisocial behaviours. The present study addresses these issues by investigating the effects of social comparison on spreading positive and negati

In the current article, we describe the development and validation of the Social Comparison Rumination Scale. This measured was developed as a supplement to existing social comparison measures and to enable us to determine its potential relevance to perfectionism and other personality constructs. The Social Comparison Rumination Scale (SCRS) is a six-item inventory assessing the extent to which an individual is cognitively preoccupied and thinking repetitively about social comparison outcomes and information. Three studies with five samples of university students are described. Psychometric an

OBJECTIVES: Different studies centered on social relationship issues among ADHD children struggled to provide a unicist explanation between primary social cognition process alteration on the one hand and a mere symptomatic outcome of the disorder triad on the other. Some authors support the idea of a potential "social phenotype" shared at a different intensity by Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The point of the study is to characterize this possible social disability in a French ADHD population and compare it to control subjects and subjects

OBJECTIVE: Children with critical congenital heart defects (cCHD) have an increased risk of neurodevelopmental impairment. Deficits in executive functioning (EF) and social-affective abilities may co-occur, undermining peer relationships. Social difficulties faced by children with cCHD have not yet been described in detail nor linked to specific cognitive or social-affective skills. This study compares children with cCHD and healthy classmates on these outcomes and examines whether social-affective deficits predict peer relationship difficulties independently of impairment in EF.
METHODS: Chi

BACKGROUND: Pulpitis is one of the major causes of acute orofacial pain globally, yet public understanding of its early signs and the importance of timely intervention remains insufficient. Despite the growing use of social media platforms for sharing health-related information, no systematic evaluation has been conducted on the quality of pulpitis-related content available on these platforms. This study aims to assess the completeness, quality, reliability, understandability and actionability of pulpitis-related videos on Douyin, Xiaohongshu, and Bilibili, with particular attention to the rol

BACKGROUND: Illicit drugs are increasingly sold on cryptomarkets and on social media. Buyers and sellers perceive these online transactions as less risky than conventional street-level exchanges. Following the Risks & Prices framework, law enforcement is the largest cost component of illicit drug distribution. We examine whether prices on cryptomarkets are lower than prices on social media and prices reported by law enforcement on primarily offline markets.
METHODS: Data consists of online advertisements for illicit drugs in Sweden in 2018, scraped from the cryptomarket Flugsvamp 2.0 (n = 826

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) and body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) are characterized by fears of negative evaluation by others (related to one's own incompetence or flawed appearance, respectively). Previous research has shown that individuals with SAD and BDD exhibit difficulty identifying facial expressions and interpretive biases for threat in social situations. The current study aimed at further investigating social cognition in SAD, BDD, and mentally healthy controls (35 individuals per group, respectively). Further, 35 individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) as a c

INTRODUCTION: Schizophrenia (SC) and bipolar disorder (BP) are two of the most severe and incapacitating mental disorders. It has been questioned whether these two conditions designate distinct illnesses with different etiologies or whether they represent different ends of a clinical spectrum with a common etiology.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study compares social and clinical characteristics of 84 SC and 84 BP subjects from the Costa Rican Central Valley (CRCV) using information from the DIGS, FIGS and psychiatric records. Each of these subjects had a best estimate lifetime consensus diagno

Recently there has been increasing interest in the relationship of the personality and the anxiety disorders. This paper presents comorbidity findings between DSM-III-R personality pathology and several DSM-III-R anxiety disorders and makes direct comparisons between anxiety groups. This is the most extensive comparison of this kind reported thus far. This report is on the first 475 anxiety patients who were recruited from multiple sites to take part in a naturalistic study of anxiety. All had a DSM-III-R diagnosis of panic, agoraphobia, social phobia, or generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Pr

Background: Deficits in social cognition are well-recognized in both schizophrenia and autism spectrum disorders (ASD). However, it is less clear how social cognition deficits differ between both disorders and what distinct mechanisms may underlie such differences. We aimed at reviewing available evidence from studies directly comparing social cognitive performance between individuals with schizophrenia and ASD. Methods: We performed a systematic review of literature up to May 22, 2018 on Pubmed, Web of Science, and Scopus. Search terms included combinations of the keywords "social cognition,"

Accumulating literature demonstrates that immigration detention is harmful to children. However, there is a scarcity of scientifically rigorous and reliable data about the health of children held in detention facilities. The aim of the study was to compare a community-based population of recently arrived refugee children flown into Australia, not detained, resettled in a non-urban area, with a population of children who arrived by boat seeking asylum, detained since arrival. The parent-version of the strength and difficulties questionnaire (SDQ) of children aged 4-15 years was compared in chil

The present study investigated interpretation bias and reduced evidence for danger (RED) bias in 49 children with social phobia and 49 nonsocially anxious children between the ages of 8 and 14 years, using an ambiguous stories task. A posttreatment and follow-up measure was included for 26 of the socially phobic children to examine whether there would be a change in interpretation and RED bias after a 12-week behavior therapy program. Ambiguous scenarios were presented sentence by sentence. Participants gave interpretations and fear ratings after each sentence, and they rated negative emotions

Young adults read a news article about skin cancer that used a gain frame (e.g., using sunscreen keeps skin healthy) or a loss frame (e.g., not using sunscreen increases skin cancer risk), and included a personal exemplar (healthy or ill). Compared to a control group, both frames increased intentions to use sunscreen. Planned SPF was higher for men in the loss frame but was unaffected by framing for women. The framing manipulation had opposite effects on sun protection behaviors among individuals who were high versus low in perceived similarity to the exemplar. Overall, the gain frame was more

OBJECTIVE: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is clinically heterogeneous, and the autogenous-reactive distinction may help characterize this heterogeneity. This study compared adolescents with reactive OCD, autogenous OCD, and healthy controls in terms of clinical characteristics, metacognitive beliefs, and social cognition, and examined associations between metacognitive beliefs and social cognition within OCD subtypes.
METHOD: This cross-sectional case-control study included 102 adolescents: 33 with reactive OCD, 31 with autogenous OCD, and 38 healthy controls. Diagnoses were confirmed us

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a common psychological disorder associated with broad interpersonal impairment. Most previous studies have examined nonverbal behavior in SAD using human coders. However, one recent study utilized a machine-based analysis of nonverbal behavior and dyadic synchrony in SAD (Asher, Kauffmann, & Aderka, 2020). In the present study, we compared human and computer assessments of nonverbal behavior in social anxiety to enhance our knowledge about their commonalities and unique differences in capturing nonverbal behavior in the context of SAD. Specifically, the present
