The ideologies of despair: a symbolic interpretation of punks and skinheads' usage of barbiturates.

In this paper a symbolic approach will be used to explain the high rate of barbiturate misuse among two modern youth movements namely punks and skinheads. It will be argued that punks and skinheads are youth social protest movements which have channelled their social protest through subcultural 'style' and symbolism. Neither group has developed an articulate coherent philosophy at the self-conscious level, rather both groups express their 'style' symbolically by dress, attitudes and behaviour. Both movements are working class in ethic, but whilst punks embody a total alienation from and reject

"I thought this course was going to be streamlined!": the limits of normal and the possibilities of transgression.

This article offers an analysis of the parallels between neo-liberalism, epistemology, and pedagogy, specifically related to how neoliberal ideologies narrow the possibilities for considering transgressive sexualities. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) education encourages educators to consider queer lives and communities, and can do so in ways that leave intact or challenge dominant norms. Neoliberalism, an economic expression of liberalism, rests on ideologies that support privatization and a diminished notion of the public good. These ideologies can become intertwined w

Why do men stigmatize individuals with eating disorders more than women? Experimental evidence that sex differences in conformity to gender norms, not biological sex, drive eating disorders' stigmatization.

Previous research has shown that men are more stigmatizing than women toward individuals with eating disorders, including anorexia nervosa and muscle dysmorphia. We hypothesized that previously observed sex differences in eating disorders' stigmatization are driven by sex differences in individuals' levels of conformity to masculine and feminine gender norms. Young adults (N = 545) completed validated measures of conformity to masculine and feminine norms and were then randomly assigned to read a character description of a male or female individual with anorexia or muscle dysmorphia. Subsequen

Identifying salient social, environmental, and situational contexts of college drinking: Impacts across drinking outcomes.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Drinking context, such as where, why, and under what social conditions drinking occurs, is consistently associated with daily variability in alcohol use. However, ecological momentary assessment (EMA) requires very brief measurement, not allowing for as many contextual assessments as researchers may like. The current investigation examined common contextual predictors and their associations with different alcohol outcomes. METHODS: A sample of N = 528 college drinkers completed three surveys about their most recent drinking episode. This included contextual predicto

Alcohol Use Severity, Anger and Drinking Motives among Firefighters.

Background: Firefighters represent an understudied population with high rates of hazardous alcohol use and alcohol use disorder. This population is also at an increased risk of mental health disorders and related symptoms such as anger. Anger is a relatively understudied negative mood state with clinical relevance to alcohol use among firefighters. Anger is associated with greater alcohol use and may spur more approach-motivated reasons for drinking compared to other negative emotions. Objectives: This study sought to examine: 1. whether anger significantly contributes to alcohol use severity

Biomedical versus cultural constructions of abnormality: the case of idiopathic hirsutism in the United States.

From an examination of (1) psychological and social stresses documented by the medical profession of women with amounts of hair departing from what is considered to be the "feminine" distribution of hair (idiopathic hirsutism), (2) biomedical information about male and female hair growth and distribution, (3) definitional influences of society, and (4) instrumental maneuverings of depilatory industries, this paper offers insights about the alteration of natural female facial and body hair to conform to a social construct of gender status. Although the hair problem is interesting in itself, its

The psychosocial impact of erythropoietic protoporphyria in childhood: a guide for parents.

INTRODUCTION: Erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP) and X-linked protoporphyria (XLP), collectively referred to here as EPP, are rare inherited disorders of heme biosynthesis characterized by severe cutaneous photosensitivity. EPP imposes significant psychosocial challenges, including activity limitations and social isolation. PURPOSE: This study aimed to characterize how the psychosocial challenges of EPP evolve across developmental stages by eliciting perspectives from parents of children with EPP. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional qualitative survey study. Eligible participants were r

All My Friends Are Doing It: Perceived Social Norms Predict Heavier Sports Betting Behavior Among Young Adults.

Sports betting is the fastest growing gambling behavior in the United States, particularly among young adults. Despite burgeoning evidence of the public health concerns associated with sports betting, antecedents of this addictive behavior are largely understudied. Informed by seminal psychological theories of conformity and existing norms-based prevention paradigms for high-risk behavior, the current study aimed to quantitatively examine perceived social norms as a potential explanatory factor for sports betting behavior. The sample was comprised of 221 young adults from 36 different U.S. sta

Social Ecological Model of Problem Gambling: A Cross-National Survey Study of Young People in the United States, South Korea, Spain, and Finland.

Problem gambling among young people is an emerging trend globally. The online environment in particular offers various possibilities for gambling engagement. This is the first cross-national survey study using the social ecological model to analyze problem gambling, especially in the online context. The study aimed to analyze how different social ecological spheres explain problem gambling. Participants were young people aged 15-25 in the United States (n = 1212), South Korea (n = 1192), Spain (n = 1212), and Finland (n = 1200). The South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS) instrument measured problem

The limits of social justice as an aspect of medical professionalism.

Contemporary accounts of medical ethics and professionalism emphasize the importance of social justice as an ideal for physicians. This ideal is often specified as a commitment to attaining the universal availability of some level of health care, if not of other elements of a "decent minimum" standard of living. I observe that physicians, in general, have not accepted the importance of social justice for professional ethics, and I further argue that social justice does not belong among professional norms. Social justice is a norm of civic rather than professional life; professional groups may

Faciality and the Surgeon as Deleuzian Artist: Reimagining the Face beyond Standardization.

Modern facial surgery operates at the intersection of anatomic precision and sociocultural meaning. The face is not merely a biological structure but a visual surface coded with norms of beauty, identity, and social legibility. Drawing from Deleuze and Guattari's theory of faciality , this editorial challenges the assumption that the reconstructive surgeon's role is to restore a "standard" face. Instead, it proposes an alternative vision of the surgeon as a Deleuzian artist -a co-creator engaged in shaping new forms of subjectivity, particularly in post-traumatic or transformative contexts. Psychological manipulation mechanisms of false fitness and supplement information and public health risks: from information manipulation to behavioral decision-making.

This study investigates how false fitness and supplement claims shape judgment and behavioral intention through cue-based interface features and considers the implications for public health. In a randomized online experiment (N = 630), participants viewed simulated social-media advertisements that manipulated authority endorsement, scarcity framing, and conformity cues in a 2 × 2 × 2 design, along with a truthful control condition. Heuristic trust (M = 4.50, SD = 0.60) and perceived credibility (M = 6.54, SD = 0.44) were generally high and were closely linked to lower risk perception (M = 1.79

Mindfulness as a Moderator of the Association Between Anxiety and Alcohol Use Severity and Drinking Motives in Professional Firefighters.

Objective: Firefighters are at risk of experiencing heightened anxiety and alcohol use perhaps due to occupational stress. Mindfulness is related to both anxiety and alcohol use; however, research on the relations of mindfulness with anxiety and alcohol use and drinking motives among firefighters is limited. This study examined (1) whether higher anxiety was positively related to alcohol use severity and drinking related motives (e.g., coping, enhancement, social, and conformity) and (2) whether higher mindfulness would moderate the association between anxiety symptom severity and alcohol use

Influence of Drinking Context and Age of Onset on Alcohol Consumption Patterns and Motivations Among Uruguayan Adults.

OBJECTIVES: An early age of drinking onset is linked to a greater likelihood of alcohol-related problems. Alcohol use occurs in places featuring characteristic social groups, and different drinking contexts are associated with different levels of alcohol-related outcomes. Drinking context may affect drinking motives, expectations or alcohol-related outcomes in concert with individual-level variables. The study aimed to examine how the preferred drinking context and age of the first drink affects the occurrence and volume of alcohol use, drinking motives and alcohol-related expectations. METHO

Commitment of Cultural Minorities in Organizations: Effects of Leadership and Pressure to Conform.

PURPOSE: In this study, we investigated the commitment of cultural minorities and majorities in organizations. We examined how contextual factors, such as pressure to conform and leadership styles, affect the commitment of minority and majority members. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: A field study was conducted on 107 employees in a large multinational corporation. FINDINGS: We hypothesize and found that cultural minorities felt more committed to the organization than majority members, thereby challenging the existing theoretical view that cultural minorities will feel less committed. We also fo

Has the health care system over-guarded the social rights of alcohol? Values in persons with schizophrenia.

This is an explorative study on the values of persons with schizophrenia based on transcripts of individual therapy sessions conducted for 40 persons with chart diagnoses of schizophrenia or schizotypal disorder. Values are action-guiding attitudes that subject human activities to be worthy of praise or blame. The schizophrenic value system conveys an overall crisis of common sense. The outcome of this has been designated as antagonomia and idionomia. Antagonomia reflects the choice to take an eccentric stand in the face of commonly shared assumptions and the here and now "other." Idionomia re

The interpersonal basis of stereotype-relevant self-views.

Recent research examining the interpersonal basis of self-stereotyping is considered from the perspective of Cognitive-Affective Personality System (CAPS) theory. The reviewed work shows that individuals tend to see themselves in a stereotypic manner when interacting with someone who engenders affiliative motivation and is thought to hold stereotypic views of their group. Evidence suggesting that this context-dependent self-stereotyping is extended temporally through future psychologically similar interactions and the invocation of significant others thought to endorse stereotypes is also disc
