Self-reported disability following distal radius fractures: the influence of hand dominance.

The purpose of this study was to record the spectrum of self-reported disability following distal radius fractures and to gauge for differences in hand dominance in the use of subjective outcome data. Items were generated through patient interviews, literature review, and peer consultation. Fifty-three items were evaluated by a group of 55 patients recovering from a fracture of the distal radius, which established the prevalence, mean severity score, and overall severity score (or impact) of each item as it related to physical function and social/emotional impact. Hand dominance, age, and gend

Interventions and the development of dominance relationships in female baboons.

Dominance relationships between adult and adolescent female yellow baboons, Papio cynocephalus, were studied in Amboseli Park, Kenya. Adolescents attempted to become dominant to some females (called 'targeted females') while remaining subordinate to others. Agonistic relationship with targeted females passed through a sequence of stages before the younger female achieved dominance. An examination of nondyadic agonistic interactions revealed that adolescents frequently intervened against targeted females, but never against nontargeted females, and that others sometimes aided adolescents against

Hair pulling and eating in captive rhesus monkey troops.

Hair pulling and eating has not yet received attention in the nonhuman primate literature. Hair pulling and eating was recorded 388 times in two heterogeneous troops of healthy rhesus monkeys that were kept according to modern management practices. The behavior in question consists of the following sequence: pulling with the fingers (1/3 of cases) or with the teeth (2/3 of cases) tufts of hair from one's own or from a partner's coat; chewing the hair and finally swallowing it; the undigested material is excreted in the feces. Hair pulling was almost exclusively (378/388) partner-directed. It w

17β-trenbolone increases circulating myeloid-derived MMP8 in CSDS-induced mice and drives depressive tendencies to social threat.

Chronic psychosocial stress is a major risk factor for major depressive disorder (MDD). The impact of 17β-trenbolone (17-TB), an anabolic steroid and potential environmental endocrine disruptor, on stress responses and mood states in mammals is unclear. In this study, we explored how 17-TB interacts with chronic social defeat stress (CSDS) to drive neuroinflammatory cascades and behavioral abnormalities in mice. Utilizing a multidisciplinary cross-cutting approach integrating behavioral analysis, molecular biology, neuroimmunology, and electrophysiology, we ascertained that 17-TB exacerbated C

Preschoolers' prosocial behavior in groups-Testing effects of dominance, popularity, and friendship.

Prosocial, other-benefitting behavior is a fundamental aspect of human social behavior. In the microsystem of their natural social groups, preschool children have to decide not only whether, but also whom to share with and help on a daily basis. In a study with 108 preschool children from five different childcare facilities in Vienna, we examined how individual measures of dominance and popularity of both the actor and the recipient, as well as their friendship influenced their prosocial behavior in a group setting. We assessed popularity and friendship with age-appropriate sociometric intervi

A trouble shared is a trouble halved: social context and status affect pain in mouse dyads.

In mice behavioral response to pain is modulated by social status. Recently, social context also has been shown to affect pain sensitivity. In our study, we aimed to investigate the effects of interaction between status and social context in dyads of outbred CD-1 male mice in which the dominance/submission relationship was stable. Mice were assessed for pain response in a formalin (1% concentration) test either alone (individually tested-IT), or in pairs of dominant and subordinate mice. In the latter condition, they could be either both injected (BI) or only one injected (OI) with formalin. W

Monkeypox outbreak: Psychological distance, risk perception, and support for risk mitigation.

Building on construal level theory, results from a survey based on a nationally representative sample of U.S. adults (N = 1000) indicate an indirect effect of social distance and temporal distance perception on emotional response, policy support, and vaccination intention through risk perception. This study also reveals that social dominance orientation contributes to perceived psychological distance of the monkeypox outbreak. These results suggest that communication about a public health crisis such as monkeypox needs to emphasize its broader community impact, rather than focusing on the prim

Individual differences in ethanol drinking meal structure are shaped by social environments.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is marked by substantial heterogeneity in drinking behaviors and health outcomes, underscoring the need for preclinical models that capture interindividual variability. We recently developed open-source capacitive lickometer systems for high-resolution monitoring of mouse fluid intake. Using LIQ PARTI and LIQ HD, we found substantial individual differences in alcohol intake that varied across sex and housing status in C57Bl6/J mice. Here, we conducted a secondary analysis of this continuous access ethanol drinking data to quantify behavioral variability in group and

Gut microbiota determines the social behavior of mice and induces metabolic and inflammatory changes in their adipose tissue.

The link between the gut microbiota and social behavior has been demonstrated, however the translational impact of a certain microbiota composition on stable behavioral patterns is yet to be elucidated. Here we employed an established social behavior mouse model of dominance (Dom) or submissiveness (Sub). A comprehensive 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis of Dom and Sub mice revealed a significantly different gut microbiota composition that clearly distinguishes between the two behavioral modes. Sub mice gut microbiota is significantly less diverse than that of Dom mice, and their taxa compositio

Atypical social behaviors in mouse models for Rett syndrome.

Social behavior depends on neural circuits that encode social identity, memory, and motivational value. These processes engage coordinated activity across hippocampal subregions, medial prefrontal cortex, thalamic and hypothalamic nuclei, as well as the mesocorticolimbic dopaminergic systems that regulate internal state, hierarchy, and social reward. In Rett syndrome and MeCP2-deficient rodent models, basic sociability is often preserved, alongside impairments in social memory, dominance behavior, aggression control, and flexible social responding, frequently accompanied by anxiety-like and se

How does ethnic minority youth's dual self-identification affect the formation of interethnic ties in friendship networks?

In an increasingly ethnically diverse Europe, this study examined the potential of dual identifiers, those identifying with both a national majority and an ethnic minority, such as German-Turkish individuals, to facilitate integration. As members of two groups, dual identifiers may be in the advantageous position to form more interethnic connections in ethnically diverse social networks. We propose that dual identifiers' intergroup behavior and their attractiveness as friends depends on how they construct their dual identity, such as identifying with both identities equally (compartmentalizati

cAMP signaling mediates behavioral flexibility and consolidation of social status in Drosophila aggression.

Social rituals, such as male-male aggression in Drosophila, are often stereotyped and the component behavioral patterns modular. The likelihood of transition from one behavioral pattern to another is malleable by experience and confers flexibility to the behavioral repertoire. Experience-dependent modification of innate aggressive behavior in flies alters fighting strategies during fights and establishes dominant-subordinate relationships. Dominance hierarchies resulting from agonistic encounters are consolidated to longer-lasting, social-status-dependent behavioral modifications, resulting in

The alkenes Z9-C29 and Z9-C31 function as quorum-sensing pheromones stimulating worker reproduction in the bumble bee Bombus terrestris.

Division of labor in reproduction in eusocial insects is governed by delicate and context- dependent mechanisms, yet the regulatory processes remain largely unclear. Here, we investigate social cues involved in the establishment of reproductive dominance in bumble bee (Bombus terrestris) workers. We reveal the roles of two alkenes, (Z)-9-nonacosene (Z9- C29) and (Z)-9-hentriacontene (Z9- C31) in the activation of ovarian development. These alkenes are found throughout the queenright bumble bee colony, including wax, workers, drones, and gynes, and their levels are positively correlated with co

Spatio-temporal dynamics of ingroup interactions in macaques.

When sharing a space with others, many species including humans evolved a compromise regulating occupancy influenced by social determinants. For example, students in a classroom tend to sit close to their friends, keeping the same spots across days, revealing the social structure in the classroom. This place preference suggests that factors such as social hierarchy and affiliation can shape space utilization, contrasting with random walk models of agents moving at random in any given direction. Here, we asked whether spatial occupancy of macaques within two unisex groups of four individuals, r

The Effects of Social Class on Individuals' Decision-Making Tendencies in a Prestige-Money Game: Social Value or Instrumental Value?

Through a series of three experiments, this study explored the possible influence of social class on the decision-making tendency of prestige-seeking in a Prestige-Money Game, and further explored the internal sources of such influence. In Experiment 1, the participants' social class was manipulated to examine whether there were class effects in prestige-seeking when individuals of different social classes were paired together in a Prestige-Money Game. In Experiment 2, social rank, which only contained ranking differences, was adopted as a more abstract proxy variable for social class to inves

Psychosocial influences on the development and course of coronary heart disease: current status and implications for research and practice.

Psychosocial characteristics predict the development and course of coronary heart disease (CHD). In this review, the authors discussed human and animal research on psychophysiological mechanisms influencing coronary artery disease and its progression to CHD. They then reviewed literature on personality and characteristics of the social environment as risk factors for CHD. Hostility confers increased risk, and a group of risk factors involving depression and anxiety may be especially important following myocardial infarction. Social isolation, interpersonal conflict, and job stress confer incre

Lorazepam treatment in the neonatal rat alters submissive behavior in adulthood.

Male hooded Lister rats were cross-fostered at birth (day 0) and reared in litters of eight. Within each litter, one pup was treated with each dose of lorazepam (0.25 or 1.25 mg/kg) and one was treated with the placebo vehicle. The pups received daily subcutaneous injections between postnatal days 7 and 21 inclusive. Starting on day 70 the animals were subjected to four tests of exploratory and social behavior: Open Field, Holeboard, Social Interaction and Home-Cage Aggression. The drug-treated animals showed an increase in submissive behavior, particularly when intruding into another animal's

Social structure and habitat design affect the impact of a novel feeding enrichment for alligators.

Providing enrichment that expands the range of behavioral opportunities associated with food acquisition and environmental exploration is an important contributing factor to the well-being of zoo animals. These behaviors can be difficult to promote in carnivores, given their foraging strategies and the logistical, ethical, and financial challenges of providing live prey. In this study, we introduced a novel feeding enrichment to Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens' five adult American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) in an attempt to simulate a live prey organism within the exhibit and promote

Interpersonal problems across levels of the psychopathology hierarchy.

We examined the relationship between psychopathology and interpersonal problems in a sample of 825 clinical and community participants. Sixteen psychiatric diagnoses and five transdiagnostic dimensions were examined in relation to self-reported interpersonal problems. The structural summary method was used with the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems Circumplex Scales to examine interpersonal problem profiles for each diagnosis and dimension. We built a structural model of mental disorders including factors corresponding to detachment (avoidant personality, social phobia, major depression), in

Testing a Dual Process Model of Gender-Based Violence: A Laboratory Examination.

The dire impact of gender-based violence on society compels development of models comprehensive enough to capture the diversity of its forms. Research has established hostile sexism (HS) as a robust predictor of gender-based violence. However, to date, research has yet to link men's benevolent sexism (BS) to physical aggression toward women, despite correlations between BS and HS and between BS and victim blaming. One model, the opposing process model of benevolent sexism (Sibley & Perry, 2010), suggests that, for men, BS acts indirectly through HS to predict acceptance of hierarchy-enhancing
