Discrete modes of social information processing predict individual behavior of fish in a group.

Individual computations and social interactions underlying collective behavior in groups of animals are of great ethological, behavioral, and theoretical interest. While complex individual behaviors have successfully been parsed into small dictionaries of stereotyped behavioral modes, studies of collective behavior largely ignored these findings; instead, their focus was on inferring single, mode-independent social interaction rules that reproduced macroscopic and often qualitative features of group behavior. Here, we bring these two approaches together to predict individual swimming patterns

Social differences of very preterm birth in Europe: interaction with obstetric history. Europop Group.

Social differences of very preterm birth (22-32 completed weeks of amenorrhea) were studied using data from a large case-control survey in Europe between 1994 and 1997; 1,675 very preterm births and 7,965 full-term births were included. The relation between social factors and very preterm birth was studied according to obstetric history and the mode of delivery onset. Very preterm birth was significantly related to low educational level among women with no previous adverse pregnancy outcome (odds ratio (OR) = 2.67, 95 percent confidence interval (CI) 1.66-4.28) and among primigravid women and

Modeling social support and life satisfaction in running groups through stress management.

BACKGROUND: The fast-paced and stressful conditions of modern life have increased the need for social and emotional resources that enhance individuals’ psychological resilience. Leisure activities, especially group-based physical exercises, offer significant social and psychological benefits. Among these, recreational running groups stand out, positively influencing participants in various ways. This study aimed to examine the mediating role of stress management in the relationship between recreational runners’ perceived social support and life satisfaction using structural equation modeling a

The effects of adolescent social isolation and group housing on adolescent binge drinking in mice.

Adolescence is a developmental period characterized by behavioral changes such as sensation seeking, impulsivity, and diminished self-control to inhibit behaviors, which can lead to increased risky behavior, including the initiation of binge drinking. Due to the necessity of peer-peer social interactions for proper development, social isolation can be particularly disruptive at this time, altering proper neural development and function and increasing risk for alcohol misuse. To investigate the effects of social context on ethanol drinking, we modulated the social environment of a mouse using s

Knowledge and Attitudes toward Cornea Donation among Different Social Groups in Poland.

BACKGROUND: Limited access to corneal tissue for transplantation remains a challenge in many parts of the world. To date, little attention has been paid to the problem of the cornea donor shortage in Poland, where the number of waiting patients exceeds the number of transplants performed three-fold. The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge and willingness towards participating in corneal donation among different social groups in Poland. METHODS: This prospective, cross-sectional study was conducted among health professionals, medical students, clerics, teachers, journalists, employee

Practicing in a person-centred environment - self-help groups in psycho-social rehabilitation.

AIM: The increasing prevalence of chronic conditions and impairments in the population is putting new demands on health and rehabilitation services. Research on self-help groups suggest that participation in these groups might have a positive impact on people who are struggling with chronic illnesses or disabilities. In this study, we explore person-centred support in which participants in self-help groups are undergoing rehabilitation to develop their knowledge, skills and confidence necessary to handle life's challenges. METHOD: The design is exploratory, analysing data from informant inter

Seroprevalence of leptospirosis in human groups at risk due to environmental, labor or social conditions.

Leptospirosis is important in Uruguay due to the economic loss caused by the diseases of production animals, mainly bovines, and also due to frequent human infection. We decided to study anti-Leptospira antibodies in the sera of dairy workers, rice laborers, veterinarians, suburban slum dwellers and garbage recyclers. Our aims were to estimate the seroprevalence of infection by Leptospira spp. in these people at risk, the relative importance of the known risk factors associated with infection, and the impact of human infections in each setting. Groups at risk were identified and 35 visits to t

The prevalence of latent tuberculosis infection in social marginal groups. An experience conducted in Tuscany.

Tuberculosis is encountering a renewal attention due to emergent causes, linked primarily to migration from high-endemic countries of many subjects who present important risk factors as poverty, homelessness, drug abuse, HIV infection. The purpose of the present study is to evaluate the spread of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in social groups traditionally at higher risk of developing the disease and often difficult to detect. Tuberculin screening with Mantoux intradermal reaction has been carried out on 2014 subjects with one or more risk conditions. We have considered the following risk conditi

Sex differences in depressiogenic risk factors and coping strategies in a socially homogeneous group.

We examined for sex differences in possible risk factors for depression, manifestations of depression and associated help-seeking and coping styles in a socially homogeneous cohort without any sex difference in lifetime rates of depression. The sexes did not differ on measures of depression, dysfunctional attitudes, perception of important interpersonal relationships, experience or perceived impact of life events. Women scored more highly on measures of neuroticism, were more dependent and were more likely to engage in self-consoling behaviours and coping styles. Recklessness as a coping style

Shared social identity and perceived social support among stroke groups during the COVID-19 pandemic: Relationship with psychosocial health.

Community-based peer support groups for stroke survivors are common in the United Kingdom and aim to support rehabilitation. This study of 260 stroke survivors across 118 groups nationally used an online survey format, completed on average 3 months into the pandemic. Analysis of both quantitative and open-ended responses provided insights into how stroke group members maintained contact during the COVID-19 pandemic and how the group processes of shared social identity and perceived social support related to psychosocial outcomes (self-esteem, well-being and loneliness). Group members adapted t

The Maintaining Factors of Social Anxiety: A Three-Group Comparison of a Clinical Sample with Highly Socially Anxious Students and Non-Anxious Students.

BACKGROUND: Clark and Wells' (1995) cognitive model of social anxiety (CWM) explains the maintenance of social anxiety and has been used as a guide for treatment of Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD). Few studies have examined the components of the model together across different samples. AIMS: This study had two distinct aims: to test the components of CWM and to examine how the variables of CWM may differ between clinical and non-clinical samples with varying levels of social anxiety. METHOD: Hypothesized relationships between three groups (i.e. a clinical sample of individuals diagnosed with S

When Social Hierarchy, Power, and Collective Autonomy Motivate Social Movement and Counter-Movement Mobilization Among Disadvantaged and Advantaged Groups.

What happens when disadvantaged group members try to gain power in an attempt to protect their collective autonomy? The present integrative review outlines dynamic social processes and conditions under which efforts to restrict a group's collective autonomy motivate social movement mobilization among disadvantaged groups to challenge social hierarchies that limit their power. This, in turn, threatens advantaged groups' perceptions of their access to power and, by extension, their sense of collective autonomy, motivating them to reaffirm the existing social hierarchy by mobilizing counter-movem

Group schema therapy versus group cognitive behavioral therapy for patients with social anxiety disorder and comorbid avoidant personality disorder: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Patients with social anxiety (SAD) and comorbid avoidant personality disorder (AVPD) are severely impaired. Group cognitive behavioral therapy (GCBT) is considered an effective treatment for SAD. More knowledge on treatment of SAD with comorbid AVPD is needed. Schema therapy, developed for personality and chronic mental disorders, may be a promising treatment. METHODS: We conducted a randomized controlled trial in an outpatient population (n = 154) with both SAD and AVPD. Group Schema Therapy (GST) and GCBT were compared on SAD symptoms (Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale) and manifes

Experiences and social constructions of loneliness in later life: Collaborative focus group discussions in Germany.

BACKGROUND: Ageing in place (AIP) policies seek to address the growing demand for healthcare needs among ageing populations. Loneliness has been identified as a challenge to AIP, as the number of people living alone at home is growing. OBJECTIVE: To understand older adults' perspectives on loneliness associated with AIP and to use these insights to inform health professional practice and health policy for the development of patient-centered solutions. METHODS: To identify issues of significance to the participants, we employed collaborative focus group discussions (FGD). From a set of eight

Better together: Group-level social dynamics predict individuals' psychological adjustment during a major life transition.

Establishing new social connections is critical during the transition to university, especially for students who have moved far from home. We examined how students' one-on-one connections, along with the dynamics of their social groups, related to their adjustment across a school year. Participants were 717 first-year international undergraduates at a Canadian university who participated in a transition program involving assignment to orientation groups of 20-30 students. Cross-sectionally, students' individual-level social network measures were associated with better adjustment at the start o

Variation in Group Composition Alters an Early-Stage Social Phenotype in hAPP-Transgenic J20 Mice.

BACKGROUND: Altered social behavior is one of the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease (AD) that results in social withdrawal and loneliness and provides a major burden on patients and their relatives. Furthermore, loneliness is associated with an increased risk to develop AD and related dementias. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate if altered social behavior is an early indicator of amyloid-β (Aβ) pathology in J20 mice, and if co-housing with wild type (WT) mice can positively influence this social phenotype. METHODS: The social phenotype of group-housed mice was assessed using an automated beha

Fighting social isolation of vulnerable people with dementia through remote group meetings: An experience report.

With the COVID-19 pandemic (WHO, 2020), social distancing became a crucial means to prevent further spread of the disease (Wendy et al, 2020). This raises concerns for dementia care (Wang et al, 2020), as social distancing leads to reduced cognitive stimulation, exercise, social networking and leisure activities (Brown et al, 2020). Active participation in art has shown positive impacts on the psychosocial wellbeing of stroke survivors (Morris et al, 2019). Additionally, engaging with humor potentially improves the memory, communication and self-esteem of people with dementia (PWD) (Stevens, 2
